RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE FOR EXTERNAL CHEMICAL CLEANING AND


PASSIVATION OF WELD JOINTS OF SS TANKS AND PIPES

1.0 SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

The sequence of operation shall be as follows:

1.1 Wash with D.M. water

1.2 Applying the acid pickling paste.

1.3 Final wash with DM water

2.0 PICKLING & PASSIVATION PROCEDURE

2.1 Wash the girth weld joints, tees elbows of SS with DM water.

2.2 Prepare a paste with 15% concentration Nitric acid (on 100% purity basis), 0.1%
hydrofluoric acid ( on 100% purity basis) and with required quantity of Silica
insulation fine grog of 0-0.5mm size with minimum 85% SiO2. Apply the paste
on SS welds joints, and fittings which needs to be cleaned, with a uniform
thickness. Allow the paste to be on the surfaces for about 30 minutes.

2.3 Remove the acid paste and wash with DM water thoroughly without any traces of
paste.
