CHAPTER 1
INTORDUCTION

Chapter I covers eight parts: (1) Background of the Study, (2) Statement of the Problem,
(3) Hypotheses, (4) Theoretical Framework, (5) Conceptual Framework, (6) Definition of
Terms, (7) Significance of the Study, and (8) Scope and Limitation of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study, justifies the need for the study and discusses the
rationale for choosing the problem.

Parts Two and Three, Statement of the Problem and the Hypotheses, states the problem to
be answered and hypotheses to be tested.

Part Four and Five, Theoretical and Conceptual Framework, tackles some theories and
principles which the study is anchored and the presents the variables that will be used in the
study.

Part Six, Definition of Terms, defines the conceptual and operational meanings of
important terms used in the study.

Part Seven, Significance of the Study, states the importance and the benefits that may be
derived from the findings of the study.

Part Eight, Scope and Limitation of the Study, specifies the scope and coverage of the

Background of the study

In construction industry, bamboo is the most popular things to use in construction world.
Carpentry is almost indispensable as far as the construction industry goes. Their expertise and
talents cover a multitude of different areas including setting foundations, laying new stairs,
installing beams and installing trims, decorations and much more. Carpentry covers many
different areas and with an open canvas, be it commercial or residential, a carpenter can manage
lots of different parts of a new build, extension or refurbishment.

Bamboo is a very important resource plant that determines the function and health of
terrestrial ecosystems, and the safety and well-being of human society. However, current use and
consumption of bamboo resources has created some serious problems that will inevitably impede
sustainable development of bamboo resources. The present study focuses on four major issues
that are closely related to the usage and development of bamboo resources, including over
exploitation, low utilization efficiency, the shortage of bamboo raw material, and environmental
issues that arise out of the development of bamboo industry. Based on an analysis on such major
problems associated with the utilization and development of bamboo resources, several strategies
were proposed to help improve the protection and utilization efficiency of bamboo resources,
including the collecting and harvesting of bamboo resources following scientific guidelines, the
enhancement of the utilization efficiency, especially multiple use of bamboo resources, the
maintenance of high production and genetic diversity of bamboo resources, and the realization of
an eco-friendly development of bamboo industry (Wei Li and Shuqiang He 2019).

A lampshade is a covering that is fitted round or over an electric light bulb in

order to protect it or decorate it, or to make the light less harsh. Bamboo can be an alternative

material that can be used in making lampshades over more traditional materials. This breaks the

traditional and boring styles of lampshades that speak of ingenuity. You have probably seen

some items made out of bamboo pieces such as candle holders, picture frames, clocks and

flowerpots. Aside from these items that are now sold by different gift stores, it is possible to

make a bamboo lampshade on your own which can be kept at home or given away to your

friends. This helps a lot if you are simply tired of your pieces of furniture at home. It is also

possible to use an old lampshade in incorporating bamboo with an old and dull lampshade (Bell

Lewis June 5, 2020).  

Electronic mosquito repellents (EMRs) are marketed in response to a huge demand from

the public for convenient, safe, and effective antimosquito products. Female Anopheles

mosquitoes transmit malaria by sucking blood from humans, and these small handheld, battery‐

powered EMRs are intended to repel them by emitting a high frequency buzz almost inaudible to

the human ear. They can be used both indoors and outdoors, and are claimed to repel mosquitoes

within a range of up to 2.5 metres (Kutz 1974; Helson 1977).

Electronic mosquito repellents EMRs have been examined for their efficacy under

laboratory conditions, none of which showed any effects for the devices tested (Jensen 2000).

This study aims for the general public to discover the potential of bamboo as a

lampshade. An ideal and marketable bamboo lampshade for a family of grass that have been

loved for their fast-growing and many believed to be a sustainable solution for construction

structure or support material, architectural element, support columns, flooring materials, fence,

various utensils that are used for salad or frying tongs like for example, another able I just

published) and they're even making T-shirts out of bamboo fiber. They come in many different

species and sub-species which gives us plenty of options in size, pattern and color. 

Statement of the problem

This study aims to develop and determine the acceptability of Bamboo Lampshade with
Electric Mosquito Repellent.

Specifically, this sought to answer the following.

1. Design a Bamboo Lampshade with Electric Mosquito Repellent.
2. What is the level of acceptability of bamboo lampshade with electric mosquito
repellent in terms of quality, durability, safety, and efficiency?
3. Is there a significant difference on the level of acceptability of bamboo lampshade
with electric mosquito repellent in terms of quality, durability, safety, and
efficiency?

Hypotheses

There is no significant difference on the level of acceptability of bamboo lampshade with

electric mosquito repellent in terms of quality, durability, safety, and efficiency.

Theoretical Framework

This study was anchored on the two theories which deals with the creation of the new

technologies. These two theories were the New Product Development Theory of Franky and

Schreier and Innovation Theories of Joseph Schumpeter.

The most important idea embedded on the new product development theory of Franke

and Schreier (2002) is that seeing new products, technologies and innovations as a strategic

weapon. The theory reflects the fact that an organization’s ability to innovate successfully has

been linked to financial performance.

Innovation theories of Joseph Schumpeter is examined a cyclical process which was a

result of the innovation in an organization, including commercial and industrial. He also referred
to innovation as the changes in the techniques of the creation of a new product, the changes in
industrial organization, the opening of a new market. Innovation means the commercial adoption
of new technology, new energy sources, and new materials. The term, innovation, simply means
the creation of something new. Innovativeness involves adopting the new creation or method in
the cultural, administrative, and social medium. When innovativeness is adopted, it can be
expressed as a function of entrepreneurship. Innovation is a process and a product in which
access is made new and such innovations arise as a result of technological change. Innovation
can be defined as a new thinking way which produces a new way of making things, and the
actions of trying out what has been created and utilizing it for social and economic activities.He
referred to innovation as creative destruction which leads to economic development in which the
entrepreneur carries out the change creator's operations.(Schumpeter 2020).

Conceptual Framework

The diagram below shows that the Independent variable are based on the quality,
durability, safety, and efficiency. On the other hand the dependent variable is the bamboo
lampshade with electric mosquito repellent.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are hereby defined conceptually and operationally for common and
better understanding of the research study:

Safety. Is a state in which hazards and conditions leading to physical, psychological or

material harm are controlled in order to preserve the health and well-being of individuals and the

community (World Health Organization, 1998).

In this study, safety is the prevention and to avoid injuries cause by accidents.

Efficiency. Signifies a peak level of performance that uses the least amount of inputs to
achieve the highest amount of output.( Micheal J. Boyle Nov. 15,2020)

In this study, efficiency is refer to the reduction in the amount of wasted resources that
are used to produce a given number of goods or services.

Quality. Is the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on
its ability to satisfy given needs. Quality, an inherent or distinguishing characteristic, a degree or
grade of excellence ( American Heritage Dictionary, 1996).

In this study, quality is refer to the features of the bamboo lampshade in electric mosquito
repellent.

Durability. The term durability is often used to imply the possession of qualities associated
with long-life (Frohnsdorff and Masters, 2018).

In this study, durability refers to the quality of being able to last long of the electric sand
screen shaker.

Acceptability. Acceptability refers to determining how well an intervention will be

received by the target population and the extent to which the new intervention or it might meet

the needs of the target population and organizational setting ( Guadalupe X Ayala et al. J Public

Health Dent. Winter, 2011).

In this study, acceptability refers to the judgement and approval of acceptability of the

design made by the panel of evaluators on the finish product.

Effectiveness - A measure of the extent to which a specific intervention, procedure,

regimen, or service, when deployed in the field in routine circumstances, does what it is intended

to do for a specified population (Wojtczak 2002).

In this study, effectiveness refers to the producing a decisive of bamboo lampshade with

electric mosquito repellent.

Electric mosquito repellent- Electric mosquito repellents are marketed in response to a

huge demand from the public for convenient, safe, and effective anti mosquito products (Enayati

2007).

In this study, electric mosquito repellent refers to the technology used to lessen the
number or to kill mosquitoes.
Bamboo- Bamboo is a tall tropical plant with hard, hollow stems. The young shoots of
the plant can be eaten and the stems are used to make furniture (Collinsdectionary).
In this study, bamboo is the main material in making of bamboo lampshade with electric
mosquito repellent.

Lampshade. a decorative covering around electric light that reduces its brightness or
controls where it shines (Cambridge dictionary).

In this study, lampshade is the product that we developed.

Significance of the study

This study will be beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will be very beneficial to the student to have this product because it
less expensive than to buy a lampshade in the market to use in studying or reading at night and to
lessen the number of mosquitoes in the area.

Technology and Livelihood education Teacher. In the upgraded technology, teacher can
use this lampshade when they checking of papers, and activities of their student at night. This
lampshade is very useful to them because it can lessen the mosquitoes in their working area
while making the important things related in school at night.

Businessmen. This study will give them insight that will lead them to a extensive
development on bamboo lampshade.

Bamboo lampshade makers. This will give them a good idea of design to showcase their
craftsmanship not just in the local term but also to international field of business.

Future Researchers. This study will be beneficial if they want to conceptualize or innovate
something great than this product where they will use it as their sources and supports to their
present research study. It is beneficial to them because of the special features that are very
interesting to deal with.

Iloilo Science and Technology University. The Innovating of Bamboo Lampshade can be
beneficial to the greatest number of students, and teachers in reading and making other activities
at night. It is very useful for them because of the special features of the lampshade. They can use
it properly and comfortable and even they can use it anywhere they want to go.

Scope and Limitations

This study aims to develop and determine the level of bamboo lampshade with electric
mosquito repellent . The respondents of the study will be the selected student, teacher, and

electrical technician of M.H Del Pilar Jaro, Iloilo. This study will be conducted in the year 2021.
To gather the data from the respondents, a researcher-made questionnaire will be utilized with
five-point hedonic scale. The data will be gathered tabulated and computed using the statistical
package for social sciences (SPSS) software, set at 0.05 alpha level. To analyze and interpret the
data, descriptive and inferential statistics will be used. For descriptive statistics, mean and
standard deviation will be used. For inferential statistics, Kruskal Wallis H test will be used.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND SUDIES

Chapter 2 includes three parts: (1) Why is bamboo a good material for the decor and
interior design, (2) Electric pest repellent; and (3) Summary.

Part One, Why is bamboo a good material for the decor and interior design, discusses some
researches the good quality of bamboo use as a decor and interior design.

Part Two, Electric pest repellent, contains different researches about the electric pest repellent.

Part Three, Summary, summarizes the researches relevant to the present study.

Why is bamboo a good material for the decor and interior design

Bamboo is highly trending as a material for both interior design, and are everyday
product it has amazing properties, and sustainable production. Our world’s bamboo, a
sustainable wood renewable resources, is being used more and more in interior design as a
replacement for cedar, mahogany, and other popular hardwood lumbers. Not only in this
multifaceted plant used for furniture, but also used structurally for buildings, textiles and as a
food source. Bamboo has been used as construction material for along time in the east, its
strength and durability put to good use in the earliest suspension bridges and various
architectures. Inherently strong and aesthetically pleasing, different parts of the globe are

catching on the bamboo as a sustainable resource. Bamboo is practical and durable resistance to
shrinking and swelling it can withstand extreme changes in humidity and temperature , bamboo
is the great choice for living room and kitchen decorating. While being strong and damage
resistant, bamboo can also be inviting and comforting (Forest May 13, 2020).
Electric pest repellent

The electronic pest control device is a contribution of electronics engineers to agriculture.

This reduces the loss to done by pest every year, encouraging the farmers to produce more foo as
farmer’s income increases. Also it makes agriculture system attractive enhancing food
efficiency. This non chemical pest control method have been alternatively advocated as the best
and efficient way to reduce pesticide contamination in our environment as it is also pesticides-
free alternatives to raising food. The author focused on the ultrasonic type of electronic pest
control devices designed to emit ultrasound which is sound of frequency more than 20 kHz.
Electronic oscillator for the production of frequency was used which required to repel pest. The
function of an electronic oscillator is to repetitively generate electrical signal of a specific
frequency. In this case, 20 kHz and above frequency of oscillation depends on the constants of
the device like resistance, capacitance and inductance. Electronic pest control device comprising
the oscillator, a small transistor amplifier and additional circuits like tripping circuits, sonic
circuit, preamplifier, 555 timer, frequency selection circuit for varying frequency and other
additional components making recent designs more effective. Electronic pest control devices
emit ultrasound which goes beyond the threshold sound hearing capacity of targeted pests. The
usual arguments by users are regarding its effectiveness. This controversy has constituted a huge
challenge to the implementation of the device in the developing world as public don’t accept it.
More proactive researchers from a developing nation have recognized habituation as one reason
behind the controversy and that delay of habituation by the introduction of variability will
contribute to resolving the controversy. Design considerations and practices to technically fortify
the device and aid in the delay of habituation were also proffered . This step will lead to the
emergence of electronic pest control devices that can be used with less controversy Author [6]

used fluorescent lamp at night near bushes which attracted many insects in the dark. After that
the ultrasonic pest repelling device was activated and on frequency generation the insects soon
moved on and get repelled almost. Some of the insect moved away at certain constant frequency
but other species of insect didn’t move as repelling frequency was found different for different
species of arthropods (Tiwari Et. Al, March 2016).

Summary

Bamboo is a lot of advantage material in making decor and interior design especially by
making bamboo lampshade it has amazing property. This wood is readily available at all cost
points, versatility that fits any decor like lampshade simply put bamboo is one of the ultimate to
go to material to use in our everyday life. Bamboo plays an important role in the environment of
our planet, when decorating with bamboo, you really cannot go wrong it is an excellent materials
and is environmental friendly. Bamboo is definitely more sustainable choice of making decor
than plastic, cotton or wood it has a beautiful aesthetic and eco-friendly to nature, bamboo is now
appearing in many home decor products. Lamp is use to let light shine in our homes during the
night time but this should not compromise how the exterior should also shine even in day light.
Using electronic pest repellent has many advantages over a chemical repellent Electronic Pest
Repellent (EPR) is an emerging technology which is cheap, eco-friendly and effective and
produces no risk at all to human. Electronic Pest Repellent is an electronic device that is capable
of generating sound of ultrasonic frequency range, not audible to human ear but to pests like
rodents, birds, insects.The controlling of mosquitoes is also crucial as in the present day context
as mosquito cause more suffering to human than any other organism with the rise in many
mosquito borne illnesses like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, zika. Development of electronic
circuit design in line with design consideration is the best and useful means instead of pesticides
and herbicides.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

Chapter 3 is divided into five parts: (1) Research Design, (2) Participants, (3) Data
Gathering Instruments, (4) Data Gathering Procedure, and (5) Data Analysis Procedure.

Part One, Research Design, restates the reasons for conducting the study and the method
used in this study.

Part Two, Participants, describes the participants in this study.

Part Three, Data Gathering Instrument, presents the sources of data needed for the
investigation.

Part Four, Data Gathering Procedure, describes the steps that the researchers will be used
in conducting this study.

Part Five, Data Analysis Procedure, explains the statistical techniques that will be
employed in analyzing the data to be gathered for the study.

Research Design
The type of research will be used in this is experimental research  is undertaken when a
researcher wishes to trace cause-and-effect relationships between defined variables. However,
there are major constraints on causal inference in experimental research, and the type of
experimental design chosen has a significant influence on the inferences that can be validly
drawn from experiment results.Kerry Tanner (2002).
This method guided the researchers in determining the acceptability of bamboo lampshade
with electric mosquito repellent. This will be conducted and focused to the selected students,
teacher, electrical technician.

Participants
The respondents of the study will be the thirty (30) selected students, teachers, and
eletrical technician coming from M.H Del Pilar Jaro. The respondents will be the one to provide
data to the researchers in determining the acceptability of the product. A purposive sampling
technique will be used in choosing the respondents.

Data Gathering Instruments

This study will use a researcher-made questionnaire about the electric sand screen shaker.
The questionnaire will be a 5-point hedonic scale which composed of 6 questions, the
questionnaire will be divided into two parts. First the personal information of the respondents
includes the name, age and type of job in the field of construction, but this only optional for the
respondents. Second part includes the evaluation on the durability, safety and effectiveness to be
rated by the respondents.

Data Gathering Instruments

This study will use a researcher-made questionnaire about the bamboo lampshade with

electric mosquito repellent. The questionnaire will be a 5-point hedonic scale which composed of

6 questions, the questionnaire will be divided into two parts. First the personal information of the

respondents includes the name, age and type of job in the electrical technician, and teacher but

this only optional for the respondents. Second part includes the evaluation on the quality,

durability, safety, and efficiency to be rated by the respondents.

The researchers will employ the scale below to be included in the questionnaire.

The questionnaire will be validated by three (3) experts to determine its validity before
employing to the respondents of the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will ask permission to the office of the Dean of the College of Education
to conduct the study. Also, the researchers will ask permission on the chosen respondents to
answer the researcher-made questionnaire.

Upon approval, the chosen respondents will be given a researcher-made questionnaire

individually. The respondents fill out and evaluate the said innovation by answering the

researcher-made questionnaire. The researcher-made questionnaire will be gathered after the

respondents have answered. Respondents’ answers will be recorded, tabulated and interpreted
using the appropriate statistical tool.

Data Analysis Procedure

The data were gathered, tabulated and computed using the Statistical Package for Social
Sciences (SPSS) software, set at 0.05 alpha level. The result will be analyzed and interpreted
using the following statistical tool.

The descriptive statistics that will be used are the mean and standard deviation. Mean will
be used in order to determine the acceptability of bamboo lampshade with electric mosquito
repellent. Standard Deviation will be used to determine the dispersion of the scores from means.

To interpret the level of acceptability, the researcher will use the scale below.
