Evolution - Building Beasts Extension Questions - Akram. Ali

The document contains questions about evolution and natural selection. It asks about how mutation leads to adaptation, how natural selection drives evolution by preserving favorable traits, and provides an example of coevolution between flowering plants and pollinators. It also asks for adaptations of different organisms like cacti storing water, grizzly bears having sharp teeth, orb spiders having circular webs, and robins being able to sing well. Finally, it asks how different bird species can live in the same area without starving, which is explained by them eating some of the same foods like worms and seeds, and living in similar conditions.

Evolution: Building Beasts Extension Questions

1. What does the dice in this activity represent? Natural Selection

2. Explain how mutation leads to adaptation. When you mutate, your mutations can be
useful for the environment which would be an adaptation.

3. How does natural selection “drive” evolution? Natural Selection “drives” evolution by
preserving favorable variations and causing the extinction of unfavorable variations.

4. a) What do you think the prefix “co” in coevolution means? (Think of words like
cooperate, coed sports.) I think the prefix “co” in coevolution means together.

b) What do you think coevolution is? I think coevolution is the influence of closely
associated species on each other in their evolution.

c) Provide an example of coevolution. An example is the coevolution of flowering plants

and associated pollinators.

5. Give an adaptation found in nature for each organism and explain how this adaptation
helps this organism to survive and reproduce in the following environments:

a) A Saguaro cactus: The cactus has an adaptation that allows it to store water in its
stump, making it survive through the desert.

b) A grizzly bear: They have very sharp teeth and fast reflexes so they can hunt fishes
down easier.

c) An orb spider: They have circular webs that help them with catching insects.

d) A robin: They can sing very well and they have an amazing color which helps them
with finding mates.

e) A jellyfish: The jellyfish helps them from predators by having electric tentacles.
6. When looking out of my back door, I see robins, blue jays, finches, crows, hawks and
owls all living in the same area. How is it possible that all of the birds can live in the
same area of one another without starving? Be specific.

To be very specific, a lot of them eat the same foods like worms and seeds. Also they live
in the same conditions like the sunny days outside when the grass blooms.
