The Convent of Christ

“Around 1530, more than eighty years before the publication of the first
Rosicrucian manifesto, the association of cross and rose already existed in
Portugal in the Convent of the Order of Christ, home of the Knights Templar,
later renamed Order of Christ. Three bocetes were, and still are, on
the abóboda (vault) of the initiation room. The rose can clearly be seen at the
center of the cross.

At the same time, a minor writing by Paracelsus called Prognosticatio Eximii

Doctoris Paracelsi (1530), containing 32 prophecies with allegorical pictures
surrounded by enigmatic texts, makes reference to an image of a double
cross over an open rose; this is one of the examples used to prove the
"Fraternity of the Rose Cross" existed far earlier than 1614”.

UNDER STONE SILENCE

Analyzing the controversial nature of the Order of the extinction process of the Templars, we
can infer that their "strange practice", called as heretical, would constitute in themselves the
unique praxis of the Order to the initiatory purpose, which for convenience of the political
scene between Philip, the Fair and Clement V, would be used as a "scapegoat" for its
extinction. Consequently, and in sequence, and its continuer the Military Order of Freires of
Christ, through the protection afforded by D. Dinis, it is almost impossible not to assume that
this did not present their own based Initiation Rituals, we extrapolate in inquisitorialmente

virtually since its founding in 1128 at the Council of Troyes, if not since its presentation to

The theme of Initiation and the Order of Christ was publicly presented through the
magnificent edited work of the philosopher and Freemason Antonio Telmo, Portugal Secret.
The author brilliantly proves that the existing medallions in the cloister of the Monastery of
Jeronimos, Lisbon, represent the initiation of Nicolau Coelho (Felgueiras, c 1460 -. Coast

However, this architectural and social relationship holds not only the medieval antiquity and /
or Renaissance. In the eighteenth century, the restoration of Lisbon after the earthquake of
1755 was victim of the same speech, but leaning in a particular political context. The
reformist ideal of the state and the opposition to the clergy congeminados the Minister

Manueline period and the internal restructuring during the reign of King John III, with the
reforms of Friar Antonio de Lisboa, to its total extinction. The first time is found in the
architecturally Templar Charola, made in the image and likeness of the Dome of the Rock

Dome of Jerusalem; the second in imposing cloisters with the beautiful and famous
"Manueline window", and finally the surrounding body of the convent, built for living in
cloistered friars of Christ. The visitor when strolling about the echo while the silence of these
stones, is stepping testimony superb history. In fact, the first space features in history the
birth of Portugal with the Crusade the Moors; the second, maturation or growth of the

the earth. Evidence of this antagonistic movement in its second aspect, was the spiritual
quest that led the motives of the Order of Christ and for which Prince Henry always
mobilized its efforts - the kingdom of Prester John of the Indies and Ethiopia. The first news
about this mysterious Christian monarch had been felt even at the time of the Temple,
around the year 1219, when the Templars took part in the daring offensive with Jean I of
Brienne, king of Jerusalem from 1210 to 1225 and co , emperor of Constantinople Latin
empire from 1231 to 1237, against Egypt, where almost reconquered Jerusalem through the
Damietta assault taken, together with the disquieting rumors arrived from the distant borders
of a foreign people who invaded Persia and which it was associated with the mysterious
Timbuktu, whose legends have raced since a few decades. Terror in the Muslim world was
huge, but the attacker would not be people of the Christian community, but the Mongolian
environment, under the command of Genghis Khan (Ghengis Khan) [5]. However, the
legend was strong it did not succumb to the laws of time, which for two centuries was closed
in default to the secret missions of Covilha Pero and the subsequent mobilization of
economic and financial resources to engender all the Maritime Expansion, the History official
reports ahead in what turned out to have serious economic consequences for the country,
really, thanks to the same Maritime Expansion became the greatest economic power in
Europe.

Therefore, in a first analysis of the architectural evolution of the Convent of Christ, we can
say that the works of the Manueline period were an integration of Charola and alleged

historians mistakenly believe that it was a revenge of King John III and Manuel I, for having

ROSE ON THE CROSS BEFORE THE ROSE + CROSS

The myth of Christian Rosenkreutz trip and his meeting with the wise men of Damcar, does

The Mystic Rose Cross arises because , as a direct descendant of the Mystic Templar , after
the extinction of this Order in Central Europe going formed another mystical movement ,
mixed Cathar and Arabic , in the mid-fourteenth century and reached the seventeenth
century : the Christian Rose Cross .

The Rosicrucian , Hermetic emblem of the Philosopher's Stone , both worth by lighting
Mystique , was known to the Templars , as is the cross found in late August 1993 in the
eastern side of the castle of the Knights Templar in Tomar , as well as in several of the their
gravestones headstones and even medallions vault.

Similar to the order of the Knights Templar was the Order of Assassins founded in Cairo in
1090, which lasted little less time . However, they were Sufis , Shia Islamic mystics or "free",
prior to Assassins and their direct influencers movement that formed in the mid- eighth
century , whose pragmatic and mystical were similar to those of the later Pink + Cruzes with
that maintained close relations culture and spirituality, particularly in Henrique's period.

In Portugal , Sufism shone above all through the Mozarabic culture, and no doubt have
influenced the spiritual pragmatic of the Temple in Portugal. Among the most famous Sufis in
the country , include the leading names in arábiga culture Abû Al- Walid Al- Baji ( Beja ,
eleventh century ) , Ah'Med Ben QASI ( Cacela , twelfth century ) and Al- Uriâni ( Loulé ,
thirteenth century ) , this one of the spiritual masters of Ibn Arabi of Murcia.

Therefore , the Mystic Sufi and later Rosicrucian acquire spiritual equivalence , where even
reach the state or supreme degree of Christ Light or Ayat Allah as " Presence of God " ,
considered himself Rosicrucian or Rosacruzista in Sufism equivalent to Taçawwuf , and only
the Enlightened or conqueror of this supreme state, after arduous cross or crescentada
inside, was indeed considered Rose Cross , equal in nature and conscience the Sufi
Mutaçawwfin .

Thus, the Rosicrucian and Sufi (as well as the yogi) are the same consciousness level: the
Christ, intuitional or Búdhico, comparticipando equally of the Greater Mysteries of Life-
consciousness (related to cosmogenesis) as Representative Genie Enlightened or Jinn of
World Supreme center, the same Agharta, Transcendent Being linked by Intuition Spiritual
the Divine Monad - Anupadaka or nous. In turn, the Rosicrucian, corresponding to the
Taçawwuf immediately, identical in nature and consciousness to the Ayatollah (and Yoguim),

Human Personality related to the Lesser Mysteries Life-Energy (empathic to

The link between Sufism and the Rose Cross is the largest echo in Mohyid-Din Ibn Arabi,
whose works, Kitab el-Isra ( "Book of the Night Journey") and Futuhat el-Mekkiyah (
"Revelations of Mecca") have severe similarities to the plan outlined by Dante Alighieri,
posthumous chronicler assumption of the Temple, in his Divine Comedy. The number 99 win
of fundamental importance, with regard to the various names of God of which depends on

Translated the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Jerusalem, through
the intercession of King Dinis, to the Military Order of the Knights of Our Lord Jesus-Christ
(known as the Order of Christ) in the year 1319 and approved by Pope John XXII during the
Manueline period took advantage of the medieval rotunda of the Convent of Christ and is

Finally, we recall the words of Lauro de Lima regarding the tradition of the "book" and

the same source, the myth of Christian Rosenkreutz in Germany and in Portugal the memory

intermingled with theological astronomer and mathematician possibly Rosicrucian German
Johann Kepler (Weil der Stadt, 12/27/1571 - Regensburg, 15.11.1630), including on the
calculation of the date of Christ's birth, which had been deeply influenced by the ideas of the
learned astronomer and Portuguese Jewish alchemist Isaac Abravanel (Lisbon, 1437 -
Venice, 1508), also dubbed in the sixteenth century of "Hermes Trismegistus" to dominate
Magna Scientia.

THE ALCHEMIST "CRUISE"

In the reign of King John III (12.13.1521 - 11.06.1557), the Convent of Christ, following the
reforms of the said Friar Anthony of Lisbon so badly accepted by the Conventual friars of
Christ until then administered by Father Diogo Rego both spiritual level as secular, received
works that radically changed his feature, or rather Italian-Renaissance additions designed in
1529 and implemented from 1531, with the cloisters leaning against the three faces of the
temple absorbing much of the existing building volume. The Rule of reformed friars of Christ,
made up of 36 chapters, was a custom adaptation of St. Benedict's Rule which gave new
look to the Order, decisively altering the cloistered in clausural, which went against his
nature that out founded. This ancient Order of the Diaspora via now a cloistered order, or
rather, enclosed by the iron hand of the tax Inquisition of Trento Reform, thus curbed his last
mission to serve the universal brotherhood longing for multiracial and multi-faith ecumenism,
feature of the Church of Love, and its space occupied by abnormal fanatic fundamentalism is

Despite all the current drama in time for the Order of Christ, it does not seem that their
particular mystique is lost at all. Indeed, in the Chapel of the Cross, in the central part of the
convent, whose dome has 91 caissons decorated with late-Renaissance themes of Ecce
Homo (the altar), we see, strategically located and seizure difficult to common look, an
enigmatic figure crowned with a long beard emerging from flames and sporting gloriously the
globe-mundi in hand with the other blessing. This property of the chapel, located at the
confluence of the three corridors that make up the large bedrooms, has a close decoration of
the Spanish Plateresque, perhaps being due to some Biscainhos craftsmen who worked for
the architect João Castilho (away by Frei Antonio Lisboa, more by possible doctrinal
disagreement than for mere reasons of technical and formal order). Its first phase was
completed in 1533, and the shot of the tower-lantern is already 1544 with the novelty of their
ornaments inspired by ancient triumphal reasons. All this high-relief iconography in question,
