The temperate forest biome is known for its deciduous trees and its

seasons. It is a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. This biome


experiences all four seasons. In summer, more food is available for the
animals and they become livelier. Temperate forests have warm summers,
cold winters, and year round precipitation. Temperate forests grow in the
Polar Regions in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Most
temperate forests are located in the eastern United States, Canada, Europe,
China, Japan, and parts of Russia. Deciduous forests are broken up into
five zones. The first zone is the tree stratum zone. It is the tallest zone and
trees here range from 60 to 100 feet tall. The second zone is the small tree
and sapling zone. Newer and shorter trees make up this zone. The shrub
zone is the third zone. Shrubs include mountain laurel, huckleberries, and
many others. The fourth zone is the herb zone, and contains short herbal
plants, like ferns. The Ground zone is the last zone where plants grow on
the ground. Each forest receives a different amount of precipitation in the
form of rain and snow. Most forests get their precipitation in winter and
spring. Annual precipitation in temperate forests ranges from 30-60 in a
year. The average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 50° F. Most
temperate forests have a high biodiversity in it. This is because the biome
has a very high density of plant life. Some of the plant species commonly
found include those of deciduous trees, ferns, birch, beech, and layers of
mosses. Similar to other biomes, scientists expect the biodiversity of
temperate forests to decrease because of deforestation and by human

not significantly harmed or helped. One example of this in the temperate
forest is the relationship between a squirrel and a tree, because the tree is
not harmed and the squirrel gets protection from predators and shelter.
Temperate forests are essential to people as they provide resources that are
very useful in our daily lives. Acid rain is main problem to this biome
which is caused by us humans. Because of our pollution from our vehicles
which harms the leaves of trees, acid rain causes them to yield fewer
seeds. However, there are many things that you can do to help sustain life
in the temperate forest biome. First of all, you can recycle. You will be
decreasing the need to cut down more trees. If we want to continue to
enjoy these beautiful temperate forests, our biome must be protected with
great care.
