The Giver Book Projects—Choose 1
Projects due June 14, 2021
1. The Giver - What's Up with That Ending?
Many people are "dissatisfied" with the ending of The Giver. Or they don't get it. What
happened? Did they die? You tell us. In a well organized essay of at least 600 words, explain the
ending of The Giver as you understand it. Make sure you have read Lois Lowry's speech at the
end of the book, to see some theories others have had.
The final product should look like this:
Summarize the ending as it is in the book.
State what you think is happening.
Explain, in detail, each part of the ending, and what you think it means. Use evidence from
the book to back up what you say.
Rebut possible objections. What might people say against your theory? What answers do you
have?
Conclusion. Restate your main points.
2. A Movie Poster
Lois Lowry has said that she would love to be a filmmaker. Imagine that you are working with the author and
a movie studio to create a film based on The Giver.
You will create a movie poster (A3 size). The poster must include the book title, ‘based on the book
by…’, a one sentence teaser, a cast listing. The central part of your poster will be a large picture. Quality
illustrations/minimal white space are expected.
On a sheet of paper either handwritten or typed, you will discuss the following in 1-2 paragraphs: are
there any changes you would make from the book to the movie? Why did you choose the actors you cast?
How might you address the fact that people in the community cannot see color or hear music?
3 Community Pamphlet
You are required to create a pamphlet advertising the community Jonas lives in. The pamphlet should include a
lot of important information about the community to help convince people to visit. You pamphlet should
include the following:
A cover page
This should be a full color and should have a catchy title
Information on the setting of the community
This should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs
Information on the rules and rituals of the community
This should be approximately 3-4 paragraphs
Information on the jobs available in the community
This should be approximately 2-3 paragraphs
Full color pictures to help advertise the community
4. My Utopia
Jonas lived in a utopian society. Everything seemed to be perfect. You will create your own Utopia. Either
on a poster, tri-fold stand up poster, or a booklet you will present your vision of a utopian society. The
following criteria must be addressed: (all questions should be considered, but do not necessarily need to be
answered individually).
1. Government and Values:
In your perfect world, what would be the ideal form of government?
Who will be in charge and make decisions for your community?
How will the leader(s) be chosen? How long will they serve?
What do the people in your community value most? (You are founding __________ because you want to live
in a community where people are ...) Briefly describe five important values of your community.
2. Family:
In your perfect world what would be the ideal family?
How will families be formed? Who will decide who marries whom and who has children? How many children
will be allowed in each family? Who will care for the children? Where? Who will care for the elderly?
Where?
Think of at least one original family ritual that all families of your community will observe (like celebrating
Christmas with presents and a tree).
3. Education and Careers:
In your perfect world what would be the ideal way to learn?
Describe your school. What age will students pursue their education? Describe the school building (or
location). What will be taught, with what tools, and by whom? Will girls and boys be treated differently?
Who chooses what career each member of the community will pursue and how is it chosen?
How long must citizens have the same job?
4. Technology/Location:
Describe the level of technology for your community. Will your community have futuristic technology or go
back to simpler times?
What methods of transportation will be used?
What about communication?
What will be your community’s source of energy?
Describe your community layout and location. (For example: Our community will be one large building …
located on an island in the Pacific Ocean.)
