SUMMARY
Indonesia is an archipelagic country surrounded by sea, so much water is
abundant but still there are areas - areas that are hard water for fresh water or
drinking water. The abundance of sunlight that shines almost all year long
Indonesian archipelago can be used as an energy source. One form of resource
utilization is an effort to take advantage of the sun's solar energy to produce fresh
water by utilizing the heat from the sun's energy for the distillation of sea water.
The purpose of this study is to design and make seawater desalination equipment
that can be used for purification or purification of water by utilizing solar energy
and performance test tools designed.
The design tool consists of three parts, evaporator, condenser and vacuum
pump. Evaporator for the evaporation chamber with an adjustable air pressure.
Evaporator connected to a condenser for condensing the water vapor formed in
the evaporator. On a given condenser cooling water flow as a fluid. Condenser
connected to a container as a container of water vapor that has become water.
Given a container of water on the hose connecting the vacuum pump, vacuum
pump will suck air in the evaporator chamber as well as bringing water vapor into
the condenser. Desalination tool works on the colligative properties of solutions of
the boiling point. The lower the atmospheric pressure, the lower the boiling point
of liquid water, whereas the higher the atmospheric pressure, the higher the
boiling point of liquid. The purpose of lowering the pressure is lower boiling point
of liquids to accelerate the rate of evaporation.
Testing in this study using a desalination has been made. The tool's
desalination capacity of 80 liter with dimensions of 100 cm x 80 cm x 20 cm.
During the test, the air pressure is set at the pressure tool desalination cmHg -5, -
7.5 cmHg, -10 cmHg. Test results desalination equipment for 6 days with
sampling points at 10.00 am, 11.00 am, 12.00 pm and 13.00 pm on the treatment
results obtained maximum volume of 40 liters of sea water and sea water
temperature 47 ᵒ C to -10 cmHg pressure obtained evaporation rate 305, 76
ml/hr.
