Basic Science Process Skills

The document outlines 12 basic science process skills: observing using the 5 senses, classifying by grouping objects according to characteristics, measuring and using numbers with standardized tools, making inferences by relating observations to prior experiences, predicting outcomes, communicating findings, controlling variables in experiments, developing hypotheses, understanding space-time relationships, interpreting data, operationally defining terms, and experimenting. It provides examples and activities to explain each skill, such as observing object characteristics using different senses, classifying animal reproduction methods, measuring and recording object lengths, and stating inferences drawn from various statements.

1) Observing
Observing involves collecting information about objects or phenomenon by using the
five senses.

 Sight
 Hearing
 Touch
 Taste
 Smell

2) Classifying
Classifying is a process of grouping objects according to certain characteristic for a
purpose.

When do we need to classify?

 When there are many items or information

 items or information are not organised

3) Measuring and using numbers

Measuring and using numbers is a process of observing quantitatively using numbers
and standard or standardised measuring tool as the reference unit. For example :
using a metre stick to measure the length of a table.

4) Making Inferences
 Making Inferences is a process of making early conclusions by relating
previous experiences with immediate observations.
 We make inference to plan actions or to make a choice.
