The document discusses different topics in science including force, energy, heat, light, sound, and magnetism. It provides definitions and examples for key terms related to these topics. For force, it defines different types of forces and how they affect motion or movement. Energy is defined in terms of potential and kinetic energy, and different renewable and non-renewable energy sources are given as examples. Heat transfer through conduction, convection and radiation is also outlined. The document similarly outlines key terms and concepts for light, sound, and magnetism.

FORCE
-Force is a push or a pull.
We apply force to:
1. make the objects move
2. make the moving object stop
3. make the object move faster or slower
3. change the direction of the moving object
-If the applied force are balanced, there will be no movement or motion
-If the applied force is not balanced, motion or movement occurs

-Displacement is the distance travelled in a certain direction. example: (7km NE)

-Magnetism is a class of physical phenomenon that includes forces exerted by magnets on

other magnets

-Magnet is a material that exhibits magnetic field.

-Gravity makes the object fall to the ground

-Weight is the measure of how much force with which an object is attracted to earth because
of gravity.

ENERGY
-Energy is the capacity of a physical system to perform work. It is the ability to do work or
cause change.
Forms of Energy
1. Potential Energy- is the stored energy. It is the energy at position or at rest
2. Kinetic Energy- is the energy in motion

Renewable Energy- is the energy that comes from resources that can be replenished through
time either through biological or naturally occurring processes.
Examples:
Solar Energy- energy given by the sun
Electricity- can be used to power appliances and even vehicles
Wind Energy- can be converted to electricity using turbines or windmills
Water- is one of the essential components in Earth. Flowing water can be converted to
hydroelectric power which can be used for electricity.
Biofuel- a type of fuel that comes from living things, particularly from plants, which have
carbon
Heat- produces thermal energy when released.
Non-renewable Energy- is the energy that is not replenished over time
Examples:
Fossil Fuel- takes million years to form naturally. (example: coal, petroleum and natural gas)
Nuclear energy

HEAT
Heat- is a form of energy associated with the motion of atoms.

Sources of Heat
Sun- is the primary source of heat
Coal- comes from dead plant matter that lived million years ago. It is another source of heat.
Most renewable resources of energy have the capacity to produce heat.
Examples: windmills, water turbines, tidal waves, geothermal source.
Fire- is produced when there is a source of fuel and oxygen.
Electricity-is another source of heat which runs the appliances at home.

Heat Transfer
Conduction- the process of heat transfer through a solid medium
Convection- the process of heat transfer through liquids or gases
Radiation- the process of heat transfer through light, X-ray or tiny particles of matter

LIGHT
Light (radiant energy) - it is a type of radiation that is visible to the human eye.
Natural source of light –is light that comes from a natural component
Examples: Sun, Stars
Artificial source of light (man-made source)- is light made or produced by humans.
Electric-based sources of light are devices that produce or emit light through the use of
electricity
Examples: flashlights, lightbulbs
Combustion-based sources pf light produce or give off light through the process of
combustion or burning.
Examples: bonfires, light candles
Opaque Object- blocks light. A shadow is created
Example: book, table, board
Shadow is a dark part that is formed when the path of light is blocked

Translucent Object- partially allow the passing of light

Example: sunglasses

Transparent Object- allows the light to pass through

Example: eyeglasses

Reflection- is the bouncing back of light when it strikes a given material such as mirror.
Refraction- is the bending of light.

SOUND
Sound- is another form of energy that is produced by vibrating objects
Sound travels as waves.
It can travel in solid, liquid and gas or air but it travels fastest in solid and slowest in gas.

Pleasant sounds- are sounds that we usually like to hear

Unpleasant sounds- are sounds that we usually do not want to hear.

Noise- is an unwanted wound that is loud, harsh and not harmonious

Loudness- is a functional sensation of our ears in which sound can be ordered on a scale
extending from a soft sound to a loud sound

Pitch- pertains to how high or how low the sound is.

Timbre (Tone quality)- makes a particular sound different from the other sound.

Natural sound- is produced by natural sources.

Example: people and animals produce sound
Artificial sound- is the sound produced by musical instruments and other gadgets such as TV
and music players.

Ultrasound- used to view internal organs or evaluating the status of buildings

Echo- is the repetition of sound. It is formed when sound waves hit a surface and then bounce
back.
