` Letting Go of Anger
Anger is one of the most destructive emotions. It can ruin your health and relationships if
your anger is not in control. It can feel overwhelming at times, but learning how to deal with
strong emotions without losing control is part of becoming more mature. However, it takes a
little effort, a little practice and a little patience.
Firstly, think before you speak. In the heat of the moment, it is easy to say something
you’ll later regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything and
allow others involved in the situation to do the same. A few moments of quiet time might help
you feel better equipped to handle what’s ahead without getting irritated or angry.
When your temper flares, put relaxation skills to work. Practice deep-breathing exercises
or repeat a calming word or phrase such as ‘take it easy’ until the anger subsides. Sometimes
writing down your thoughts and feelings can improve how you feel. Reflecting on what you’ve
written can also help you to see things in a different perspectives.
Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Doing this can take a weight off your
shoulder as well as your mind. You can speak to a trusted friend or family member.
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other negative feelings to crowd
out positive feelings, you might find yourself swallowed up by your own bitterness or sense of
injustice. But if you can forgive someone who angered you, you might both learn from the
situation and strengthen your relationship. Take time to relax. If you know what helps you relax,
you will find that it can be helpful in defusing tension and anger. Take some time to do
something you enjoy, whether it’s listening to music, watching a movie or something else. It will
help you to decrease negative feelings. Stepping away from a situation when you are
starting to feel angry gives you space to think clearly
and calm down. If things are starting to get heated,
consider taking a break and address the problem
when you are calmer.
Everyone feels angry at times; it is how you
behave in those instances that is important. You
cannot control what happens to you, but you can
control your reactions, responses and attitude in
difficult situations --- and that is what will make a
difference in your life.
Learning your triggers and healthy coping skills can lead to better relationships and a
happier life. Take better control of your anger and your life today!
