Assignment 1

The document discusses three theories of leadership: 1. Trait theory suggests that leaders are born with certain innate qualities and traits that make them suited for leadership. It focuses on identifying distinguishing characteristics of leaders. 2. Situational theory proposes that effective leadership depends on adapting one's style to specific circumstances. A leader must vary their approach depending on factors like the task and people involved. 3. Behavioral theory believes great leaders are made, not born, through learning beneficial behaviors. It focuses on observing leaders' actions and how their behaviors impact productivity rather than innate personality traits.

1. TRAIT THEORY OF LEADERSHIP:
As the word “trait” means characteristic or a quality of an individual, this
theory says that the leaders are born and those that have the right
characteristics and attributes are more qualified to leadership. Trait theory
of leadership endeavors to answer why few people are acceptable leaders
and others are not.

The trait theory is based on the features and traits of both successful and
unsuccessful kind of leaders and is also used to anticipate leadership
adequacy. The subsequent list of characteristics is then contrasted with
those of potential leaders to evaluate their probability of progress or failure.
Once found, the theory is that these natural leaders can then be nurtured to
become great leaders. Researchers investigating the trait theory attempt to
recognize leadership qualities from alternate point of views. They focus on
the physiological attributes such as appearance, weight, and height;
demographics such as age, education, and familial background; and
intelligence, which encompasses decisiveness, judgment, and knowledge.

2. SITUATIONAL THEORY OF LEADERSHIP:

Since the name indicates, this theory says that the most effective leaders are
those that can adjust their style according to the circumstance and deeply
observe the cues such as the type of tasks, and different components that
may add to taking care of business. Situational theories of leadership work
on the assumption that the most effective style of leadership changes from
situation to situation. To be most effective and successful, a leader must be
able to adapt his style and approach to diverse circumstances.

For example, some employees perform better under a leader who is more
autocratic and directive. For others, success will be more likely if the leader
can step back and trust his team to make decisions and carry out plans
without the leader’s direct involvement. On a similar note, not all types of
industries and business settings require the same skills and leadership
traits in equal measure. Some fields demand a large measure of innovation,
whereas in others, personal charisma and relational connection with clients
are far more important. All in all, this theory mainly focuses on the ability
of a leader to adapt variations according to the varying situations.

3. BEHAVIOURAL THEORY OF LEADERSHIP:

Unlike trait theory, behavioral theory is based on the belief that great
leaders are not born rather they are made. It mainly concentrates on what
leaders do or the actions that they display in the workplace. People agreeing
with this behavioral theory of leadership, supports the idea that all you need to
do to be an effective leader is to learn a certain set of behaviors. It does not focus
on personality traits of leader instead it involves observing and evaluating
leaders’ actions and behaviors when they are responding to a specific situation.

This theory promotes the idea that all leaders are capable of learning and
developing through adopting beneficial behaviors and performing them in their
workplace. Behavioral leadership theory also encourages leaders to be self-
aware of their behavior and to recognize how it affects the productivity and
morale of their team.
