Assignment Module 1 Questions

This document summarizes key concepts from Shannon-Hartley theorem: 1) Shannon-Hartley theorem describes the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted over a communications channel as a function of bandwidth and noise. Higher bandwidth allows for higher capacity but also higher noise. 2) Thermal noise, also called Johnson noise, is generated by thermal agitation of electrons in conductors. It has a major influence on communication quality. 3) Calculations show that with a 30dB SNR, a 10kHz bandwidth channel has lower information capacity than a 40kHz channel, in line with Shannon-Hartley theorem.

Assignment Module 1:

1. What is the significant of the Shannon-Hartley theorem?

- In information theory, the Shannon–Hartley theorem tells the maximum rate at which
information can be transmitted over a  communications  channel  of  a specified
bandwidth in the presence of noise.
- Also, according to Shannon Hartley, when the value of bandwidth is high, the capacity will
rise which makes the noise also high.

2. What is the other name of thermal noise? Briefly explain this type of noise.

- Randomly were form from the atom motions, which creates heats.
- Thermal noise is generated naturally by thermal agitation of electrons in a conductor
commonly found in opto-electronic devices. In communication, thermal noise has a major
influence to the quality of the receiver.

3. If the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for a communication channel required 30 dB, determine the
information capacity of the system for the following bandwidth:

i. 10 kHz
ii. 40 kHz

Comment on the effect of bandwidth to the information capacity of the system in relation to
the theorem.

i. I = B log10 (1 + S/N)
= 3.32 B log10 (1 + S/N)
SNR (db) = 30dB
= antilog 3
So, = 1000

ii. I = 3.32 B log10 (1 + S/N)

= 3.32 (40 x 103) log10 (1 + 1000)
= 39845 bps

4. A signal of frequency 150 Hz is to be transmitted. Calculate the:

i. length of the antenna required without any modulation process and

ii. length of the antenna required if a 250 MHz carrier signal is used.

Answers :
i. Length = λ x (1/10) λ = c /f
= (2 x 106) / (1/10) = (3 x 108) / (150)
= 200000m = 2000000

i. Length = λ x (1/10) λ = c /f
= (1.2) / (1/10) = (3 x 108) / (250 x 106)
= 0.12m = 1.2

What is the effect by using the carrier signal in the above case?
= Value of frequency is high, the λ will be shorter. And when the frequency is lower, the
disturbation / noise increase and will easily absorb into the bandwidth.
