Lesson 1: Principles of High-Quality Assessment in The Classroom

The document discusses principles of high-quality assessment in the classroom. It provides examples of applying several principles, including appropriateness of assessment methods, fairness, positive consequences, reliability, and authenticity. For appropriateness of assessment methods, an example is given of a science teacher assessing learning of human body parts through an objective test with pictures and fill-in questions. Fairness is exemplified by a teacher who does not show bias and appreciates all student efforts equally. Positive consequences are demonstrated by a teacher giving candy rewards for correct answers. Reliability is depicted through a test measuring ability to solve quadratic equations. Authenticity is shown through a portfolio assignment requiring real-life examples and creativity.

Lesson 1: Principles of High-quality Assessment in the Classroom

Entry Ticket

For me, I see that the brain is meditating itself to absorb all of the information it
gets. It also show that it keep practicing to enhance its memory, verbal reasoning
and its abstract reasoning so that the brain will always ready to face new things.

Checkpoint

A. How do you characterize the importance of each principles of high-quality

assessment?

Clarity of Learning Targets- it keeps us in track in teaching our students. It reminds

us to not teach outside the curriculum vitae.

Appropriateness of Assessment Methods- guide us especially in making

assessment for our students that it should be related to what have been taught.

Balance- reminds us that our assessment should include all the domains of
learning.

Validity- reminds us that our assessment should be valid and is following what is
inside the curriculum guide.

Reliability- reminds us that our assessment should show good result and
consistency.
Fairness- reminds us that every students are different from each other, so we
should cater each of their needs and let them showcase their strengths.

Positive Consequences- gives students motivation on doing the assessment.

Authenticity- assessment should also/must include real life problem/situations to

ready them for the future.

Practically and Efficiency- be resourceful in making/doing an assessment.

Assessment is a Continuous Process- learning never stop unless we are dead. This
principle reminds us to grab each opportunity to learn new things.

Ethics- reminds us of confidentiality to protect the feeling of our students.

B. Read more available resources and references that talk about principles of high
quality assessment from the internet or from books. Choose five among the 12
principles and give real life examples.

PRINCIPLE EXAMPLE/APPLICATION
Appropriateness of Assessment My science teacher in grade 6 teach about the
Methods human body parts, so to assess if we really learn
those part and its function the next day she gave
an objective test there she shows a picture of
each part of the human body and we write on
our paper its name and its functions.
Fairness On of my teacher in senior high really like this
one classmate of mine because she almost excel
on everything that why on every performances
she give her performance will be my teachers
bases for everyone’s effort. But my adviser is
different, she don’t do biases and stereotype.
She’s friendly with everyone but when it comes
to performances she’s really on point on giving
you what the performances lacks. She
appreciates everyone’s efforts.
Positive Consequences My grade 6 substitute teacher in grade 6 gives
us candy every time we answer her questions
correctly. So we listen to her attentively during
discussion and raised our hand eagerly during
question time with the hope of getting a reward
if we answer it correctly.
Reliability A teacher in grade 10 create a test that
measures our ability to solve quadratic
equations. When we answer it correctly, he
assumes that we can answer also correctly some
similar items.
Authenticity My grade 9 teacher require us to make portfolio
at the end of the grading, she said that it should
include all our activities, quizzes, exams and
documentations and also to show our creativity
on making our own portfolio.

Exit Ticket

Present your ideas what is depicted in the picture based on the implemented
principles of High-quality Assessment in the classroom.

1. Appropriateness of Assessment Method is depicted on this picture because the

teacher is doing an objective type of test.
2. Clarity of Learning Targets because as you can see their re arts, history,
research, mathematics icons and an arrow that hits the bulls eye means that the
class focuses that students to learn a different subject and students are aware and
know how they can focuser heir attention during this subject.

3. Practically and efficiency because the teacher show familiarity on each students
strengths/likes. He avoided taking unfamiliar assessment that may create risk on
time and may get questionable result from student’s performances.

4. Fairness because the teacher avoided bias on giving the exam. The teacher
avoids doing stereotyping with everyone’s capabilities.

5. Validity because according to Google, validity refers to the accuracy of an

assessment-whether or not it measure what is supposed to measure. So the boy
teach the dog to whistle but it did not say that the dog actually able to learn how to
whistle.

6. Balance because it shows the students achievement with the help of some
research.

7. Positive Consequences because the teacher give positive encouragements to the

students to do their homework.

8. Reliability because the test paper itself is the evidence thaw was record to verify
that the score is reliable.

9. Authenticity because the library card has the validity to access everything inside
the library.
10. Assessment is a Continuous Process because now the child doesn’t know how
to use mobile phone but later on he will know how to.
