carried by the company, Eastman Industrial Supply Inc.

II. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This manual is applicable only on how to properly select products carried by Eastman
Industrial Supply Inc.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES

Application Engineer shall select and, if necessary, size the products supplied by the
company, including the preparation of costing and proposal to clients.

IV. DEFINITION OF TERMS

A. Base and Manifold Assembly – the base and manifold assembly containing the base
where the pump will be put, the frame for the controller, and the manifold ( a pipe that
provides a common suction and a common discharge for all pumps in the CPS assembly )

B. Best Efficiency Point (BEP) – this is the point on the pump performance curve which has
the highest possible efficiency of a specific pump.

C. Building Management System (BMS) – is a computer-based control system which

controls and monitors the electrical and mechanical equipment installed in a building.
BMS systems can be connected with or without wiring connections. Without wiring
connections, an equipment can be monitored or controlled using various
communication protocols such as BACNet (usually used in commercial buildings) and
Modbus (usually used for industrial equipment).

D. Cistern Tank – is a tank for storing water underground.

E. Communication Protocol – is a system of rules which allow devices in a network to

transmit and/or receive information.

F. Constant Pressure System (CPS) – a type of booster pump set whose main purpose is to
maintain a constant pressure throughout the entire pip.

G. Controller Enclosure – is the shell which protects the internal components of the
controller from foreign materials in the environment (solids and liquids). Controller
enclosure protection effectiveness against solids and liquid can be determine by its
NEMA or IP Rating.

H. Drives – are electrical machines that are used to change or control the speed of an
electric motor.

I. Fire Pump – is a pump whose main purpose is to provide sprinklers systems and hose
standpipes with water at higher pressures.

J. Fittings – are used in pipe systems to connect pipes or tubes, connect different
pipe/tube sizes or shapes and for other purposes, such as measuring flow or pressure.

K. Flow Rate – is the amount of fluid passing per unit time.

L. Frame Size – is a designation of a motor’s size, specially its shaft center height to the
floor when in horizontal position.

M. Frequency – this is the electrical frequency for which the motor is manufactured. This is
usually either 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

N. Hydropneumatic Tanks – are pressure vessels which contain both air and water inside.
Hydropneumatic tanks are used to prevent long run times of pumps and can prevent
build-up of pressure inside pipes for closed circuit hydronic systems (such as chilled
water systems).

O. Impeller – it is the component of the pump which directly transfer energy to the fluid.

P. Impeller Trim – is the required diameter of an impeller to meet the flow rate and total
dynamic head needed. Impeller trim is needed to reduce the Motor Power Rating
needed by a pump.

Q. Induction Motor/Motor – an induction motor is a machine which convert electrical

power to mechanical power.

R. Jockey Pump – a pump application whose main purpose is to maintain the pressure
within the sprinkler system and hose standpipe system.

S. Maximum Working Pressure – is the pressure at which a material can withstand without
breaking, cracking, or bulging.

T. Motor Controller / Controller – the motor controller acts as a means to command an

electric motor. The controller can include a manual or automatic means of: starting and
stopping the motor, regulating speed, and electrical protection against high and low
voltage and current.

U. Motor Enclosure – describes how the motor casing, its way of dissipating heat and for
what type of environment it can handle.

REMINDER: This document is a property of Eastman Industrial Supply, Inc., any part hereof should not be replicated in any form without the

V. Motor Power Rating – it is the mechanical power output that can be measured at the
motor shaft. It can be also called the motor brake horsepower; it is the minimum power
required by the pump to run.

W. Mounting Type – indicates a motor’s position (vertical or horizontal) and whether the
motor is either foot or flange mounted or both.

X. Nominal Diameter (DN) – is the diameter of the pipes or tubes that can be connection
with the valve or fitting.

Y. Number of Poles – is the number of magnetic poles that appear in the motor when
electrical power is applied.

Z. Number of Stages – is an indication of the number of impellers inside a pump. A high

number of stages indicate a higher total dynamic head.

AA. Pedestal/Foundation/Concrete Pad or Footing – is a concrete compression element used

to carry load of a heavy equipment, such as vertical turbine pumps.

BB. Performance Curve – is a graph/chart which contains the performance characteristics of

a pump. The performance curve is different for each pump and can be affected by a
pump’s speed, impeller diameter, impeller type, and number of stages.

CC. Pump – is a machine which adds energy to fluids such as water. A pump can have many
applications, such as: for transferring chemicals, for pressure boosting and maintaining
fluids flowing.

DD. Pump Run Time – is the length of time at which the pump runs. Longer run time
contributes to electrical cost.

EE. Slab thickness – is thickness of the roofing of a cistern tank (called “slab”)

FF. Soft Start/Soft Stop Units – also known as Soft Starters, these electrical machines
prevent the sudden change in speed of motors during starting and stopping, by doing
this, Soft Starters can increase the life of a motor’s rotating parts

GG. Starting Method – indicates the way on how a motor can be started. This is based on the
motor number of leads/terminals and the power rating of the motor.

HH. Supply Phase – is an indication of the power supply a motor is designed.

II. Tank Depth – is the depth of the cistern tank.

JJ. Total Dynamic Head (TDH) – is the total equivalent height that a fluid can be pumped,
taking into account friction losses in the pipe.

KK. UL/FM Fire Pump – a UL listed and FM approved fire pump means the pump has been
tested and certified to comply the minimum requirements of NFPA 20.

LL. Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) – are certifying bodies which
validate, inspect, audit, test, and certify the safety and quality of products.

MM. Valves – is a device used to regulate, control or redirect the flow of a fluid (like water).
Valves achieve control by opening, shutting or partial obstruction of the fluid pathway.

NN. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) – otherwise called as Variable Speed Drive or Inverter
are drives that control the speed of motor via controlling the frequency of the voltage
exiting the drive. VFDs are commonly used for pumps with 24/7 or very long run times,
this is due to the fact that VFDs can reduce power consumption via speed control.

OO. Vertical Turbine Pump – is a type of pumps used for medium to high flow and medium
to high pressure. These type of pumps are installed on cistern tanks. A typical Vertical
Turbine Pump may contain the following:
 Bowl Assembly – is an assembly containing bowl like items which encase the
impellers of a vertical turbine pump and the strainer. Each bowl contains a single
impeller and represents a single stage, bowls usually come in more than one.
 Discharge Head – is the part of a vertical turbine pump which connects to the pipes.
 Column Assembly – connects the bowl assembly to the discharge head. This
contains the column, where water passes, and the lineshaft, a long shaft which
connects the bowl assembly shaft to the motor.

PP. Voltage Rating – the voltage for which the motor is designed.

QQ. Water Heater – a device used to heat water for residential/commercial/industrial use.
The two common types of water heaters:
 Single Point – are water heaters that heat water via one pipe passing through it.
 Multi-Point – are water heaters can heat water using more than one pipe passing
through the heater example.
