Vector Control of PMSM

The document discusses different methods of controlling synchronous motors, including direct and indirect vector control. Direct vector control uses terminal voltage and current or sensor measurements to calculate the field angle, while indirect vector control estimates the field angle using rotor position and machine parameters. It also describes an open loop V/F control method where the inverter varies the frequency to control motor speed without feedback on rotor position. This open loop method provides less accurate speed control but can run multiple motors at the same speed.

Classification

• According to how the field angle (ϴf) is

acquired
• Direct vector control: If (ϴf) is calculated
using terminal V and I or Hall sensors or
flux sensing sensors
• Indirect vector control: If (ϴf) is
calculated using rotor position
measurement and partial estimation with
only machine parameters but not any other
variables such as V or I

source inverter will be discussed
• The electrical rotor speed ωr is compared
to the reference speed ω*r

2. Open loop v/f control
• In this method, the synchronous motor is
supplied by variable frequency inverter in an
open loop.
• By open loop, we mean that there is no
feedback given to the supply.
• The inverter has no information about the
current position of the rotor.
• This method is preferable when highly
accurate speed control is not required.

2. Open loop v/f control
• Supply from the mains is fed into the rectifier
inverter set where desired frequency can be
attained.
• Depending on the frequency, the synchronous
speed of the motor can be varied.

2. Open loop v/f control
• The three-phase supply from the mains is
converted to dc by using rectifiers.
• Then the rippled dc is smoothened by using LC
filters.
• The DC is fed to the inverters. These inverters
can be either voltage source inverters or
current source inverter.
• The frequency of the supply fed to the motor
can be varied and accordingly speed control
of synchronous motor can be done.

2. Open loop v/f control
• Open loop operation is useful when a number
of motors need to be run at exactly the same
speed.
• This method has a disadvantage though. This
method causes spontaneous oscillation or
hunting.
