1. Listen to a conversation that uses the reported speech:


Reported speech check examples and structure.
We use reported speech when we want to tell someone what someone said.
We usually use a reporting verb (ex. Say, tell, ask, etc.) and then change the
tense of what was actually said in direct speech.
Verbs in the present simple change to the past simple; the present continuous
changes to the past continuous; can changes to could, will changes to would,
etc.
She said she was having the interview at four o’clock.
(Direct speech: I’m having the interview at four o’clock.’)
They said they’d phone later and let me know.
(Direct speech: ‘we’ll phone later and let you know.’)
They asked if I had any experience with people.
I told them about helping at the school fair and visiting old people at the home.
They asked me what acting I had done, so I told them that I’d had a main
part in the school play.
They also asked if I spoke any foreign languages.

2. Report the following sentences, exercise:


a) She said, “I am Reading.”
→ She said that she was reading.

b) They said, “We are busy.”


→ They said that they were busy

c) He said, “I know a better restaurant.”


→ He said that he knew a better restaurant.

d) She said, “I woke up early.”


→ She said that she had woken up early.
e) He said, “I will ring her.”
→ He said that he would ring her.

f) They said, “We have just arrived.”


→ They said that they had just arrived.

g) He said, “I will clean the car.”


→ He said that he would clean the car.

h) She said, “I did not say that.”


→ She said that she had not said that.

i) She said, “I don’t know where my shoes are.”


→ She said that she did not know where her shoes were.

j) He said: “I won’t tell anyone.”


→ He said that he would not tell anyone.

3. Writing and speaking practice


Using the reported speech, create a conversation and roleplay it next
class. The context is the following:
Three Friends are talking about something that happened recently. They
report things that were said by them or others. For example:

Person A: well, that was a Good party. Wasn’t it?


Person B: yeah, it was. But i was upset when your friend said that i had
gained weight.
Person C: ¿Did i really tell you that? Wow, i don’t remember.

Kenia: Hi Ismael, What are you doing here?


Ismael: Hi Kenia, my friend told me that I could come.
Kenia: Oh, this is amazing! And how did you know how to get
here?
Ismael: She said that I should take the train. And she said that I
could call her if I needed help.
Kenia: She is very kind, I hope you can meet new friends.
Ismael: Thank You. See you later.

Danna: Hello! Kenia, how are you?


Kenia: ¡Hi Danna! I’m fine, how are you?
Danna: Great, can you please tell me what does José says about
the party?
Kenia: He said that he would be there two hours late.
Danna: And the others guests?
Kenia: Everyone is fine. Ismael said that a friend explained how
to get there.
Danna: Perfect!
Danna: What about the food?
Kenia: My friend told me that he would cook everything for the
party.

One week later


Danna: Hi Ismael, what ‘up?
Ismael: Hi Danna, I am great and you?
Danna: Good, Tell me how was the party? Kenia told me that you
were there.
Ismael: Oh Yes, The party was very funny, and the food was very
delicious
Danna: That´s fantastic
