Abstract: This paper investigates the feasibility of online learning through the study of student
learning outcomes based on the academic performance of FEU-Tech IT students. Two questions
that assess the online platform used and average grades to decide pass or fail are part of a survey
we used. The final semester assessment findings were used as an outcome test for results. Online
learning is the newest and most common method of learning. Today, virtual learning or distance
education. Amidst the pandemic, schools and colleges are required to operate online. This study
uses quantitative descriptive survey research method to determine the effectiveness of online
learning to IT students based on their academic performance.
Key Words: online learning, academic performance, quantitative, descriptive
1. INTRODUCTION
Education is a vitally important part of people's lives; Education today is very diverse compared
to the 1950s, due to developments in teaching and other great advancements that make teaching
techniques simpler. Online learning is a form of virtual learning or distance learning which has
now long been part of the education system and has been the largest online learning platform in
recent times. School and colleges in the country are now required to turn to online courses with
no concrete planning to keep schooling on track amid the continuing global pandemic. Although
this kind of platform is not new for universities because they used to have online class for a day.
This study should give insights in the ongoing online schooling. Also, this study aims to know
how effective online learning based on their academic performance.
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Online learning is education that takes place virtually over the Internet. It is often called
as “e-learning”. This mode of education is one type of distance learning that takes places across
distance and not in a traditional classroom. There are other types of distance learning today
including: (a) correspondence courses which is conducted through regular mail with little
interaction; (b) telecourses where content is delivered via radio or television broadcast; (c) CD-
ROM courses where the student interacts with static computer content; (d) online learning
which is an internet-based courses are offered synchronously and/or asynchronously; and (e)
mobile learning by means of devices such as cellular phones, PDAs and digital audio players.
According to The National Center for Education Statistics, as of 2020 there are more
than 6 million students currently in online courses as part of their higher education program.
85% of those students think that online learning is the same or better than the traditional
classroom experience.
Why online learning and why now? Online learning meets the needs of the population of
students who cannot or prefer not to participate in traditional classroom settings. For them, this
mode of learning is as equal as the traditional way. Nowadays, there are a lot of situations where
a student may not be able to attend a class personally.
Stated below are the FAQs regarding the online research which is a part of the
background of the study.
Advantages of Online Learning
Convenience: 24/7 access from any online computer; accommodates busy
schedules; no commuting, no searching for parking.
Enhanced Learning: Research shows increased depth of understanding and
retention of course content; more meaningful discussions; emphasis on writing
skills, technology skills, and life skills like time management, independence, and
self-discipline.
Leveling of the Playing Field: Students can take more time to think and reflect
before communicating; shy students tend to thrive online; anonymity of the
online environment.
Interaction: Increased student-to-teacher and student-to-student interaction and
discussion; a more student-centered learning environment; less passive listening
and more active learning; a greater sense of connectedness, synergy.
Innovative Teaching: Student-centered approaches; increased variety and
creativity of learning activities; address different learning styles; changes and
improvements can translate to on-ground courses as well
Improved Administration: Time to examine student work more thoroughly;
ability to document and record online interactions; ability to manage grading
online.
Savings: Accommodate more students; increased student satisfaction = higher
retention and fewer repeats.
Maximize Physical Resources: Lessen demand on limited campus
infrastructure;
decrease congestion on campus and parking lots.
Outreach: Give students options; reach new student markets; appeal to current
students thus increasing enrollments.
What Internet skills would be helpful in an online class?
The most successful students have the following Internet skills:
• Familiarity with Web browsers and an email program.
• Some familiarity with Web-based interactions such as email, discussion
boards, listservs,
and chat rooms.
• Proficiency with typing and word processing.
• Experience in successful Internet searches using a variety of search engines.
How is online teaching different from traditional classroom teaching?
The online model emphasizes an interactive learning environment, designed to
stimulate dialogue between instructor and students and among students
themselves. The online process requires both instructor and students to take
active roles. The instructor will often act as a facilitator, organizing activities
that engage students directly rather than relying too heavily on lectures and
memorization.
The effectiveness of online learning depends on how a student perceives information
virtually. Each student has different levels of understanding and this greatly affects how online
learning may be effective or not. Through this study, we will be able to determine its
effectiveness based on the academic performance of the subjects.
1.2 LITERATURE REVIEW
This part deals with review of related literature in this proposal which comprises different
studies both past and present in relation to the academic performance of the IT students.
The study conducted by Carbonilla Gorra, V. & Bhati, S. S. (2016). “The traditional
student image of higher learning has been somewhat limited in many countries, but given the
impact of the Internet, this traditional “student body” has changed. Rather than being limited to
regional demographics, the student body for educational institutions offering online courses has
changed drastically.”
Another study was conducted by Baticulon, R., Alberto, N., Baron, M., et al. (2020).
“Most frequently encountered were difficulty adjusting learning styles, having to perform
responsibilities at home, and poor communication between educators and learners.”
1.3 PROBLEM STATEMENT
In this study, the researchers will aim to analyze the effectiveness of the online learning to IT
college students. The researchers will aim to know the following specifically:
(1) What are the disadvantages of Online Learning in the Philippines?
(2) How Online College courses affect the student’s academic performance:
a) Freshmen Students
b) Graduating Students
1.4 THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
General
Weighted
Average (GWA)
Effective Online Ineffective
Learning Online Learning
The study revolves around the effectivity of Online Learning to IT students and in order
to conclude the researchers are focusing on the average grades the students will get during the
process of Online Learning. This framework shows that for the study to conclude that Online
Learning is effective to IT students, a student must obtain a passing grade on his/her GWA while
if a student obtains a failing grade, it will be concluded as ineffective.
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Online learning based on the Academic
Performance of FEU Institute’s IT students. The study is believed to have advantageous intent to
the following:
School Administrator. Particularly to the Teachers, Class Advisers, and Guidance
Counselors so that they may create and implement activities and programs that will help the
students in their academic performance in the new normal set-up and also raise their awareness
of the difficulties that the students and also the teachers
experience.
Parents. They will gain more information about the new
the learning environment, how it works, its advantage and disadvantages, and more importantly,
this study will help them to understand and support their child in their online class.
Students. Being the main focus of the study, they will be able
to acquire knowledge on how different factors around them hinder or enhance their academic
performance. This study will help them to cope up and look for solutions in dealing with these
factors that may hinder them from achieving their academic endeavors.
Future Researchers. They will benefit by using the outcome of this study as the
background of their research and additional understanding of the research topic.
.
1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
This study is only conducted among the IT students of Far Eastern University – Institute
of Technology. Researchers will use the quantitative method of investigation as a method of
obtaining information and data from the questionnaire or survey and interview with the
respondents. This is the design chosen by the researchers because the said topic will use the
grades as the basis to know the effectiveness of Online learning. Lastly, the survey is conducted
at the end of the first semester, so the grades given by the respondents are only from the first
semester instead of the average grade of the whole school year.
2. METHODOLOGY
This study aims to use the quantitative descriptive survey research method. The nth
number of Information Technology students enrolled in FEU- Institute of Technology will
served as the respondents to evaluate the effectiveness of online learning. The survey
questionnaires will be composed of two parts: (1) Evaluating the online platform used; (2)
Average grades to determine pass or fail. The research survey was used as a guide for the
following areas: user-interface, notifications/announcements, uploading of modules and
formative/summative, account security, and the overall use of the system. On to the second part,
the respondents are requested to input their General Weighted Average (GWA) so that the
researcher will determine how many students passed and failed the course. The findings of this
proposal will show whether online learning is effective to IT students.
3. CONCLUSION
This is the third main section of the research proposal. Write the conclusion for the
research proposal.
