III.1 Introduction
The aim of any topographical survey exercise is to determine the relative locations of point
(Place) on the earth’s surface by measuring horizontal distance (X and Y), differences in
elevation (Z) and direction (ɵ). The topographical maps that the produced often give the
location of places (observable features within the study area) and information about changes
elevation depicted using contours and spot heights. The topographical and cadastral maps
also serve as base maps.

III.2.1 Measuring Horizontal Distance

In tachymetry method, a rapid optical means of measuring distance using a telecope with
cross hairs and a stadia rod. The method that we shall employ is closed traverse where
readings begin and end at fixed control ppoints of known location. This permits the checking,
calculation and adjustment for closure error obtained during the readings.

III.2.2 Measuring Vertical Distance

The aim of obtaining vertical distances is to determine the differences and changes is elevation
from one location to another. This yask will be done using levelling method with a
digital/automatic level telescope and a stadia rod or levelling staff, or measunring vertical
angles and a slope distances.

Figure III-2. Measuring Vertical Distance

III.2.3 Difference in Elevation

The closure error can be determined for closed and close-loop traverses. The closure error
can be divided by the number of stations on the traverse or correction at each station can be
calculated according to the distance from the origin of the survey :

Ci = bi/L * Ec
Where :
Ci : the correction applied to station l
xiii

bi : the distance to station i from the origin of the traverse

L : the total length of the traverse
Page

PT Surveyor Indonesia (Persero)

PROPOSAL
Topographic Survey, Hydrographic Survey & Geotechnical Investigation

Ec : the closeure error

Figure III-3. Difference in Elevation

III.2.4 Horizontal Distances

As with levelling the closure error will be determined for closed and close-loop traverses;
where the coordinates of the end points are identical or known. The location in the horizontal
plane is given by x and y coordinates (e.g. northing and easting). Using the measured
horizontal distances and adjusted angles, we shall calculate coordinates of each station. The
difference between the calculated and known coordinates of the end control point is dx and
dy, the course error in x and y. As with leveling, the adjustment will be a function of the
distance traversed (Li) relative to the total length of traverse (L) :

Cdxi = dx * Li/L Cdyi = dy * Li/L

Where Cdx and Cdy are the adjusments in x and y coordinates at station i.

III.2.5 Preparation of Drawing

All survey information will shown in the drawing using guidelines listed below :

CHAPTER IV. HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEY

IV.1 Introduction
Bathymetric surveys or often referred to as Depth Sounding are intended to determine the
state of the sea topography or the condition of the marine configuration. The method used in
this measurement is by determining the sea depth position on the longitudinal and transverse
paths for cross checks. Depth positioning is done by using GPS.

The methodology for implementing this bathymetric surveys are as follows:

The depth sounding path is the ship's travel path that carries out depth sounding from the
starting point to the end point of the survey area. The distance between the depth sounding
paths depends on the desired precision resolution.

Usually, the distance between the depth sounding paths is 25 meters for each sounding path,
data is taken from the depth of the waters as far as 5 to 10 meters, and for control data is
crossed with 100 m intervals. The starting and ending points for each sounding path are
recorded and then the data is input into a measuring device equipped with a Echosounder
Raytheon type DE-719c facility, to be used as a reference or benchmark for motorboat trips
along the sounding path. An example of a sounding path in the measurement area can be
seen in the following image :

IV.1.1 Survey Equipment

The survey equipment used in bathymetric measurements are:
 The Raytheon Type DE-719C Echo Sounder is equipped with GPS (Global
Positioning System) which will give the instrument position on a horizontal
frame with the help of a satelite. With this facility, position control in a
horizontal frame from a fixed point on the ground is not required.
 Note book is a portable computer unit needed for data storing that are
downloaded from the GPS Receiver device.
 Boat
Boats are used for carrying surveyors and measuring equipment along
designated sounding paths.
In its operation, the boat must meet several criteria, including:
 The boat must be spacious and comfortable enough for surveyors to carry
out measurement activities and data downloading from the equipment to
the computer, and preferably closed and free from engine vibration
 The boat must be stable and easy to maneuver at low speeds
 The fuel capacity must meet or match the length of the sounding path

IV.1.2 Navigation Data Processing

Navigation data for bathymetric measurements using the Post Processing Kinematic (PPK)
method as primary navigation and the Absolute method as secondary navigation, the GPS
device is installed on the ship and as a Base Station. The navigation data is then processed
after bathymetric measurements are completed every day. This allows evaluation to be carried
out continuously during the bathymetric measurement process.

The navigation tool installation is installed directly above the Echosounder device assambled
on the ship, so it does not require an offset for the Echosounder position. Navigation tools
(GPS) and Echosounder have been arranged in one system, making it easier to process the
bathymetry data.

IV.2 Horizontal Control

IV.2.1 Electric Positioning System
a. Electronic Positioning system (DGPS/GPS with Beacon Receiver) with a
horizontal accuracy of less than one meter or as specified in IHO standards shall
be used.
b. Wide area GPS corrections are provided by the DGPS, C-DGPS or WAAS
networks. Where the signal cannot be received or when higher accuracy is
required, it may be necessary to install a temporary DGPS or RTK
reference station. This temporary station must be installed on a
permanently marked control point of sufficient accuracy.
c. Before collecting data, it may be necessary to verify the parameters and the
accuracy obtained by the positioning system. This could be achieved by
doing different tests.
d. The positioning system must be monitored to ensure that the quality of
horizontal positioning falls within specifications. The position of the
reference station should be initially verified against a known control point, and a
check of the vessel’s system, relative to a point surveyed on a wharf or accessible
feature, should be done.

with an accuracy of 0.01m shall be used. All the time the same frequency shall be
maintained till the completion of the particular survey. The contractor at their risk and
cost may use the multi-beam echo sounder without claiming additional cost but with a prior
permission of employer/engineer. The rate may be quoted only for the survey with single
beam echo sounder

IV.3.2 Motion Reference Unit (MRU)

MRU shall be used, the measured Heave, pitch and Roll correction shall be corrected from
the depth value. Heave, pitch, roll are logged during the acquisition stage and are
to be checked and processed to meet the specifications of the systems used. Spikes
and anomalies within the attitude and heading sensor data should be corrected or removed.

CHAPTER V. GEOTECHNICAL
INVESTIGATION

V.1 Introduction
Boring methods are widely used for subsurface investigations to collect samples, in almost all
types of soil, for visual inspection or laboratory testing. There are several boring techniques
like auger boring, rotary drilling, wash boring, percussion drilling, auger drilling, and test pits
that are employed to collect disturbed and undisturbed samples of soils.

These boring methods are selected based on the soil types, the efficiency of boring technique,
types of soil sample (disturbed or undisturbed), and the availability of facility and accuracy by
which soil and groundwater variations can be determined.

V.2 Field Investigation

V.2.1 Boring
Boreholes will be drilled through all types of soil and rock strata at locations indicated in the
drawing showing test points. If hard rock (SPT > 100) is encountered the borehole shall be
terminated after drilling 2.0M inside the hard rock. The exact depth of the boreholes may be
modified at site by the Engineerin-Charge after taking into considerations the soil/rock strata
encountered.

Boring in all types of soil and decomposed rock shall be done by 76 mm diameter rotary drilling
using mild steel or tungsten carbide bits.

Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) shall be performed in the boreholes at every 2.0 M depth
or wherever a change of strata is encountered. SPT shall be done in accordance with ASTM D
1586- 99, "Standard Test Method for Penetration Test and Split-barrel Sampling of Soil". The
following information shall be recorded for all the SPTs conducted.
a. Bore hole number and location
xxi

b. Date of conducting SPT

d. Penetration record and 'N' value

e. Water table information
f. Casing used, if any
g. Weather conditions
h. RL of existing ground level

Rock core drilling will be resorted to when rock is encountered i.e. SPT value exceeds 100.
Rock core drilling shall be carried out using diamond drill bits having minimum core size of
54.7 mm (NX size). Every bit of rock core recovered shall be preserved in core boxes
conforming to the relevant ASTM standards. The drilling information and core description shall
be in accordance with ASTM D 2113-99, “Standard Practice for Rock Core Drilling and
Sampling of Rock for Site Investigation”. Where the core recovery is nil, SPT shall be
performed, and representative samples from such strata shall be preserved in polythene bags.
Where it is not possible to collect such representative samples, wash boring samples shall be
preserved or cuttings obtained from circulating water shall be collected and preserved.

V.2.2 Trial Pits

Trial pits will be open excavations carried up to approximate depths as indicated in the drawing
showing test points. The exact depth of the trial pits, however, may be modified at the site
by the Engineer-in-Charge.

The top of the pits should be large enough such that the minimum bottom dimensions of the
pit may be 1.20 x 1.20M. Depth of pits may be from 2.0 to 3.0M. The sides of the pit shall be
suitably battered to avoid collapse.

The excavated material from the trial pits shall be placed near the pit in stockpiles, separated
when sufficiently different materials are encountered. Marked stakes will be driven in the
stockpiles indicating the depths from which the material has been excavated. The excavated
material shall be sufficiently away from the pit so as not to endanger the stability of the sides.

V.2.3 Down Seismic Test

Down hole seismic test will be conducted to determine the interval velocities from arrival times
and relative arrival times of compression (P) and shear (S) seismic waves generated at surface
down to vertically installed sensors.

V.2.4 Pressure Metter Test

Pressure meter test will be conducted on selected bore holes at every 2.0m interval on good
quality bore holes prepared using mud wash rotary technique. During drilling care should be
taken to monitor the rotation rate advance rate and mudflow rate to obtain high quality
borehole. Suitable membrane should be used.

V.2.5 Electrical Resistivity Test

Purpose of the test is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity values. Soil
Electrical Resistivity test shall be done in accordance to IEEE standard 81. It should be carried
out by four point Wenner method or equivalent. Soil Resistivity shall be reported in Ohms
meter.

V.3 Sampling and Laboratory Test
