Technology Center (HTC - the Engineer), are referred as Client and Engineer.
The Employer proposes to install cement terminal at Belawan District, South of Sumatera
Province. It is proposed to obtain site details regarding ground undulations and location of the
existing physical features, facilities etc. by carrying out detailed topographic survey, detail
about sea water depth, tides and water stream by conducting hydrographic survey and detail
about soil/geotechnical investigation relevant to off shore jetty work and on shore building
works.
I.2 Location
The proposed terminal site is located at Belawan Terminal of Pelindo-1 (approximately 60 km
from Bandara Internasional Kualanamu and 26 km from Medan City) in the island of North of
Sumatera, Indonesia.

III.1 Introduction
The aim of any topographical survey exercise is to determine the relative locations of point
(Place) on the earth’s surface by measuring horizontal distance (X and Y), differences in
elevation (Z) and direction (ɵ). The topographical maps that the produced often give the
location of places (observable features within the study area) and information about changes
elevation depicted using contours and spot heights. The topographical and cadastral maps
also serve as base maps.
III.2 Methodology
The proposed methodology will focus on primary (field) and secondary data collection and
management including data editing, cartographic map production and quality assurance
control.
Establishment of Ground
Field Work
Control Points

In tachymetry method, a rapid optical means of measuring distance using a telecope with
cross hairs and a stadia rod. The method that we shall employ is closed traverse where
readings begin and end at fixed control ppoints of known location. This permits the checking,
calculation and adjustment for closure error obtained during the readings.
The aim of obtaining vertical distances is to determine the differences and changes is elevation
from one location to another. This yask will be done using levelling method with a
digital/automatic level telescope and a stadia rod or levelling staff, or measunring vertical
angles and a slope distances.
The closure error can be determined for closed and close-loop traverses. The closure error
can be divided by the number of stations on the traverse or correction at each station can be
calculated according to the distance from the origin of the survey :
Ci = bi/L * Ec
Where :
Ci : the correction applied to station l
xiii
As with levelling the closure error will be determined for closed and close-loop traverses;
where the coordinates of the end points are identical or known. The location in the horizontal
plane is given by x and y coordinates (e.g. northing and easting). Using the measured
horizontal distances and adjusted angles, we shall calculate coordinates of each station. The
difference between the calculated and known coordinates of the end control point is dx and
dy, the course error in x and y. As with leveling, the adjustment will be a function of the
distance traversed (Li) relative to the total length of traverse (L) :
Where Cdx and Cdy are the adjusments in x and y coordinates at station i.
All survey information will shown in the drawing using guidelines listed below :
Drawings shall be prepared in layers; different entities like road, spot levels, drains,
buildings, boundary wall, bench mark, dimension etc. shall have different layers, name of
the layer shall be relevant to the item in the layer (example dimension “DIM” etc.)
Existing Bench marks, New Benchmarks their co-ordinates and level vii. Relation
between true north and grid north
The survey plans ibtained from the land record with property boundary information and details
such as acreage, location of beacons and their coordinates will be scanned, georeferenced
and the boundary and beacons digitized in AutoCad software version 2010. The obtained
cadastral information will be overlaid on the topographical data obtained during field work.
Finnaly, topographical-cadastral maps with reasonable scale 1:500 shall be produced with all
details boundary information, topographic features and contours.

IV.1 Introduction
Bathymetric surveys or often referred to as Depth Sounding are intended to determine the
state of the sea topography or the condition of the marine configuration. The method used in
this measurement is by determining the sea depth position on the longitudinal and transverse
paths for cross checks. Depth positioning is done by using GPS.
Usually, the distance between the depth sounding paths is 25 meters for each sounding path,
data is taken from the depth of the waters as far as 5 to 10 meters, and for control data is
crossed with 100 m intervals. The starting and ending points for each sounding path are
recorded and then the data is input into a measuring device equipped with a Echosounder
Raytheon type DE-719c facility, to be used as a reference or benchmark for motorboat trips
along the sounding path. An example of a sounding path in the measurement area can be
seen in the following image :
xvi

Figure IV-1. The Movement of the Boat in Navigating the Sounding Path
Guessing Board
Page
The guessing board is used for observing the sea level fluctuations, in this case
an OTT brand Automatic Water Level Recorder is used
Safety Equipment
The safety equipment needed during survey activities is life jacket
Tidal Data Recording Form
EMA = Water level elevation is measured from the zero of the guessing board
Z = The water depth as a result of the sounding (distance from the bottom of the water
to the transducer)
A = Distance from transducer to the water surface
From the definitions above, the base elevation of the channel calculated from the zero of the
guessing board is (ED) :
ED = Z + A – EMA

The navigation tool installation is installed directly above the Echosounder device assambled
on the ship, so it does not require an offset for the Echosounder position. Navigation tools
(GPS) and Echosounder have been arranged in one system, making it easier to process the
bathymetry data.

CHAPTER V. GEOTECHNICAL
INVESTIGATION
V.1 Introduction
Boring methods are widely used for subsurface investigations to collect samples, in almost all
types of soil, for visual inspection or laboratory testing. There are several boring techniques
like auger boring, rotary drilling, wash boring, percussion drilling, auger drilling, and test pits
that are employed to collect disturbed and undisturbed samples of soils.
These boring methods are selected based on the soil types, the efficiency of boring technique,
types of soil sample (disturbed or undisturbed), and the availability of facility and accuracy by
which soil and groundwater variations can be determined.
Boring in all types of soil and decomposed rock shall be done by 76 mm diameter rotary drilling
using mild steel or tungsten carbide bits.
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) shall be performed in the boreholes at every 2.0 M depth
or wherever a change of strata is encountered. SPT shall be done in accordance with ASTM D
1586- 99, "Standard Test Method for Penetration Test and Split-barrel Sampling of Soil". The
following information shall be recorded for all the SPTs conducted.
a. Bore hole number and location
xxi
Rock core drilling will be resorted to when rock is encountered i.e. SPT value exceeds 100.
Rock core drilling shall be carried out using diamond drill bits having minimum core size of
54.7 mm (NX size). Every bit of rock core recovered shall be preserved in core boxes
conforming to the relevant ASTM standards. The drilling information and core description shall
be in accordance with ASTM D 2113-99, “Standard Practice for Rock Core Drilling and
Sampling of Rock for Site Investigation”. Where the core recovery is nil, SPT shall be
performed, and representative samples from such strata shall be preserved in polythene bags.
Where it is not possible to collect such representative samples, wash boring samples shall be
preserved or cuttings obtained from circulating water shall be collected and preserved.
The top of the pits should be large enough such that the minimum bottom dimensions of the
pit may be 1.20 x 1.20M. Depth of pits may be from 2.0 to 3.0M. The sides of the pit shall be
suitably battered to avoid collapse.
The excavated material from the trial pits shall be placed near the pit in stockpiles, separated
when sufficiently different materials are encountered. Marked stakes will be driven in the
stockpiles indicating the depths from which the material has been excavated. The excavated
material shall be sufficiently away from the pit so as not to endanger the stability of the sides.
