Atomic Structure Tutorial-1

The document contains 10 questions about atomic structure and properties. It asks the reader to identify atomic properties of uranium-238, compare photon energies of different wavelengths of light, calculate the number of waves made by an electron in the third Bohr orbit of hydrogen, find frequencies and wavelengths from given values, calculate speeds and ratios of time periods for different atomic orbitals, and determine ionization energies from photon wavelengths.

Atomic Structure Tutorial-1

1. Find out the atomic number, mass number, number of protons, electrons and neutrons present in the element
238
with the notation 92 U.

2. Which has a higher energy, a photon of violet light with wavelength 400 Å or a photon of red light with
wavelength 7000 Å?  h = 6.62  10−34 Js 

3. Find out the number of waves made by a Bohr-electron in one complete revolution in its third Bohr orbit of H-
atom.
4. The wavelength of an electromagnetic radiation is 600 nm. What is its frequency?
5. The bond energy of H-H bond is 104 kcal/mol. What is the largest wavelength of electromagnetic radiation
needed to dissociate H2 molecules? Assume that one photon may dissociate only one molecule.
6. Calculate the speed of electron revolving in the 3rd orbit of hydrogen atom.
7. Calculate the ratio of time period of electron in the 2nd orbit of H-atom to that in the 3rd orbit of He+ ion.
8. Calculate the excitation energy of Li2+ ion in the ground state.
9. Calculate the momentum of a photon of wavelength 10 Å.
10. Electromagnetic radiation of wavelength 24 nm is just sufficient to ionize sodium atom. Calculate the
ionization energy of sodium atom.
