TUCKS
A tuck is a narrow fold of material stitched on right side of

the garment. It is even in width along its whole length. It is stitched to give shape to the

garment and to hold the fullness in a decorative way. The width of the tucks varies in

different types of tucks. When calculating the amount of material for tucks, remember

that each tuck needs allowances equal to twice its finished width. There are several

methods of tucking.

a. Pin Tucks

b. Cross tucks

c. Corded Tucks

d. Shell tucks

e. Group Tucks with Scalloping


A. Pin Tucks

These are tiny tucks used on baby cloths and fine blouses. They are

usually less than 1/8” wide.

Stitching Procedure:

- Transfer the tuck marking to the right side of fabric.

- Fold at each marking with required width (1/8” or less).

- Keeping right side of the fabric together, tucks should be machine stitched from one end

to the other end.

- The threads should be fastened at the both ends.


B. Cross Tucks

When rows of tucks are stitched along a fabric in both horizontal and

vertical directions, the decoration is called cross tuck.

Stitching Procedure:

- Transfer the tuck marking to the right side of fabric.

- Fold at each marking with required width (1/8” or less).

- Keeping right side of the fabric together, tucks should be machine stitched from one end

to the other end.

- After making the tucks in vertical direction press them to one side.

- Mark the horizontal tucks and stitch it.


C. Corded Tucks

Corded tucks are made by placing cords inside the tucks. It is used for

decoration. Differently sized cords can be used for cording. The width of the tuck depends

upon the size of cord.

Stitching Procedure:

- Transfer the tuck marking to the right side of fabric.

- Place cord on wrong side of fabric at centre of tuck.

- Stitch along the marking, keeping the cord inside.

- Stitching should be done close to cording but without catching the cord.
D. Shell Tucks

Shell tucks are also known as scalloped tucks. This is a very decorative

tuck made by hand. Running stitches can be done instead of machine stitching. Here the width

of tuck is about ¼”, as shell tuck requires wider areas for making scalloping.

Stitching Procedure:

- Transfer the tuck marking to the right side of fabric.

- Make plain tucks with ¼” width.

- Mark evenly spaced dots about ½” apart on the tucks.

- Make two or three overcast stitches trough the dot markings and pull it tight and fasten it.
