An Assignment On Literature Review: Submitted To

This document is an assignment on a literature review for a research methodology course. It includes a literature matrix summarizing 5 sources on the impact of migrant remittances. The literature review finds most research focuses on economic growth, financial development, and poverty alleviation effects of remittances. While some studies found remittances positively impact GDP and financial development, others found their effect on growth is negative or smallest on investment. The research gap is exploring new markets for exporting migrant workers.

2.Literature Review: Reviewing the existing literature is mostly focused on the issues of
economic growth, financial development and poverty alleviation effects on remittance inflow
for the remittance receiving developing countries ( Masuduzzaman, 2014). Author showed that
remittances have a significant positive effect on financial development. Authorised also
discovered some policy issue.

Empirical studies on the countries selected for the current research are few in number. Some
earlier studies like (Azam, 2015) found that real GDP growth was positively related to workers’
remittances. Such remittances appeared to be the third important source of capital for economic
growth.

In addition, some studies have argued that international remittances significantly reduce poverty
in Bangladesh (Kumar, 2019). Author showed that in her research paper if a household

4
receives international remittances, the probability of that household being poor is decreased
by 28.07 per cent.

Much of the current literature on the workers’ remittances has concentrated on two broad
strands. Studies related with macroeconomics, especially growth impact of remittances
constitute one of them. (Ahamed, 2010) found that remittance flows to Bangladesh have been
statistically significant but have negative impact on growth.

(Ahmed and Chowdhur, 1998) found that remittance has positive impact on GNP, largest impact
on consumption but smallest impact on investmen. Authors also suggested to explore new
markets for manpower exports.

3.Research Gap: Remittances in the world represent one of major international financial
resources, which sometimes they exceed the flows of foreign direct investment (FDI). For
centuries, there have been heated debates on the sources of economic growth in developing
economies and also why some countries reflect strong economic growth comparing to others. We
have seen in the Literature Review that every writer has shown the relationship of economics
with remittances but has not described in detail the impact on any sector of the economy.
