Module Communications Network - Communications Network
Diagnosis and Testing
Principles of Operation
For a det aile d descript ion of the Communicat ions Network, refer to the relevant Description and Operation section in the
workshop manual. REFER t o : Com m uni cat i ons Network (418-00 Module Communicat ions Net work, Descript ion and

& CAUTION: Diagnosis by substitution from a donor vehicle is NOT acceptable. Subst it ution of cont rol modules does
not guarantee confirm at ion of a fault , an d may also cause ad dit i ona l fa ul ts in t he veh icle bei ng t es ted an d/ or t he do nor

CAN Network Integrity Checks
In the event t hat one or more control modules are not communicati ng on eit her the Medium Speed (MS) or High Speed ( HS)
CAN Buses, checks can be performed to confirm the i ntegrity of t he CAN harness.
The fol lowing informat ion is applicable to HS and MS CAN Buses accessible via the J1962 diagnost ic connector.
Modules are connected to t he CAN harne ss eit her in a 'loop' or 'spur' configuration. In the 'loop' type configuration the
CAN harn ess loo ps in to t he mod ule (v ia two connect or pins) and then loops out of the module (via another two connector
pins). In the 'spur' type configuration, a harness spur is spliced into the main 'backbone' of the CAN harnessand the
module is connected to the harness spur via two connector pins.
For a det ailed descript ion of the CAN Net work s and archit ecture, refer to t he rele vant Description and Operat ion section
in the Workshop Manual.
REFER t o: Commun icat io ns Net work (418-00 Module Communicat ions Net work, Descri pt ion and Operat
If a control module is suspected of non-communication, the Network I ntegri ty test applicat ion available on t he
manufacturer approved diagnost ic system can be used to confirm if communicat ion is possible between the control
modules on t he vehicle and the manufacturer approved diagnostic system (via t he J1962 diagnost ic connect or ). The
resul t s from t he test can be used to dete rmi ne if eit her a single module or mult iple modules are failing to
communicate.
If t he Network I nt egrity test indicat es t hat one or more module on one of the CAN net works ( HS or MS) are fa iling to
comm unicat e, there are several checks t hat can be made. The fi rst step is to identify if both of t he CAN terminating
modules on each individual CAN Bus are communicati ng. If bot h CAN t erm in at ing modul es for eac h ind ividu al CAN Bus are
com mu nica t in g (identified via the Network I ntegrity test ), then it can be confirmed that the main 'backbone'of the CAN
harn ess is complete . The main 'backbone' of the CAN harness consists of all the modules connected to the CAN
harness
via a 'l oop' confi gu rat ion and also includes the two terminating modules.
Communication with both CAN t erm i na t ing modules via t he Net wo rk I nt egrit y test confirms the physical integri ty of t he
main 'backbone' of the CAN harness (and the harness spur to the J1962 diagnost ic connector). This means that t here is no
requirement to check t he resistan ce of the CAN Net work. Thi s is because t he sta ndard check for 60 ohms across the CAN
High and CAN Low li nes will not provid e an y additiona l info rmat ion rega rd ing the phy sical condit ion of t he CAN ha rness ,
beyond what has already been dete rmined from t he Network I ntegrity test .
It is wort h not in g t hat even if one of the terminati ng modules is disconnected from the CAN harness, communicat ions
bet ween t he modules st ill connected may sti ll be possible. Therefore communication between t he manufacturer approved
diagnostic system and the connected modules may also be possible.
In the case where mult iple modules, including a t erminat ing module, are fai ling to communicate, having first confirmed the
power and ground suppli es are correct, the approximat e location of the open circuit can be identifi ed from analysis of the
Net work I ntegrity test result s and reference to t he relevant CAN net work circuit diagrams. For example, if an open circuit
existed in a certain posit ion on the CAN harne ss, any modul e posit i oned on the Net work bet ween the J1962 connect or and
the ope n circuit should ret urn a response during the Network I ntegrity test. No responses would be returned from any
modules past the open circuit fault in t he Net work.
If, after the init ial checks(Network I ntegrity test using the manuaf cturer approveddiagnostic system, and
power and ground suppli es to the module have been checked and confinned as correct), a module that is connected to t
he CAN harness via a 'spur' t ype confi gurat i on is suspecte d of not communic at ing , then the physical int egrit y of the CAN
harnes s 'spur ' can be checked.
This is most eas ily und ert ake n by indiv idu all y check ing the cont inui t y of t he CAN High and CAN Low lin es bet ween
the non -communica t ing mo dule connect or ( wit h the mod ule di sconnec t ed) and the J1962 diagnost ic connect or.
As well as the met hods descri bed so far in t his document, which can be used to det ermine the locat ion of an open circuit
in the CAN harness , 'Lost Commu nicat i ons ' DTCs can also be used for t his purpos e. Lost communicat io n DTCs me an t hat a E
0
modul e is not receivin g CAN inform at io n fro m anot her modul e.
For exa mp le, if a glob al DTC rea d were to be carried out, only DTCs stored in the modules that the manufacturer approved
diagnost ic system could communicate wit h would be displayed. If there was an open circuit fault in a certain posit ion on
the CAN harness , t he mod ul es t hat cou ld di splay DTCs wou ld all be prior to t he op en circui t on t he Net work, and these
modules should display 'Lost Communicat ions' DTCs with all the modules located on the Network past the open circuit
fault .
C
'Bus off' DTCs
The refere nces to bus and i ts condit ion refe r to the net wor k concerned and the m odu les on that network.
If a module logs a 'Bus Off' DTC, it means that the moduel has detected CAN t ransmi ssi on errors an d has d isab
led it s's own CAN t ra nsmi ssion s and disconnect ed itse lf from t he net work in an at te mpt to all ow the rest of the network
to function. At t his point the 'Bus Off' DTC is set. A commo n cause of 'Bus Off ' DTCs can be a short circuit in the CAN
net wor k.
The basic guidel ines are covered in the description and operat ion section, such as not att empt ing to repair fibre optic
cables, but addit ional precautions include:
• Do not t ouch t he exposed ends of the opt ical fi bres (grease from skin can contaminate the fibre)
• Whenever t he fibre optic cable is disconnected, cover the connectors to prevent dust contaminat ion
• Do not expose the fibre optic cable to heat
• Do not bend the fibre optic cable t hrough less than a 25 mm (one inch) radius
• Do not use laser pens to test the fibre optic cable's abilit y to pass light
- There is a dedicate d tes t er to use wit h the MOST net work modu les and fi bre opt ic harn ess to ass i st wit h

Wiring Harnesses - Wiring Harness
Description and Operation
Introduction
.&,CAUTION: Do not use any other heat shrink slee ve ot her t han t he appro ved glue li ned heat shr ink slee ve me nt
ion ed in t he repai r proce dur e.
The purpose of t his document is to promote quick and efficient minor repair to harness connectors or cables using
approved met hods and the wiring harness repair kit. Repairs may only be made to cables and connectors which have been
mechanically, not electrically damaged. It also applies where the whole extent of the damage can be clearly ident ifi ed and
rectified.
Care and nea t ness are essential requirements in making a perfect repair.
Caution :
At the t ime of t hi s first issue of the HarnessRepair Guide, do not approve repairs to any of the following circuits:
If any ha rness(s) w ith defective electrical connector terminals or wires from the above circuitsare a concern, new
componentsmust be installed.
0E
Repair Kit
& cAUTION: Where the repair procedure i ndicates that a glue li ned heat shri nk sleeve should be appli ed, apply
suffi cient heat to the glue lined heat shrink to melt the glue in order to provide a water tight seal. Do not over heat the
glue lined heat shrink sleeve so that the wiring harness insulation becomesdamaged.
The wiring harness repair kit has been produced which comprises:
A suitable heat source, for shrinking heat shrink sleeves will be required.
The pre-i nsulated diamond grip range of electrical connector t erminals and in-li ne, butt splice connectors contained
within the wiring harness repair kit are the only acceptable product for t he repairs of wiring harnesses. The butt connectors
not only grip the wire but also the insulation, making a very secure joint.
If an electrical connector te rminal is not included in the wiring harness repair kit then approval for t he repair is NOT given
and in these circumstances a new wiring harness must be i nstall ed.
The pre-t erminate d wiring hamess(s) are supplied with t he insulation in oneof three colors, red, blue or yellow. The colors
do not apply to any particular circuit but to t he harness wire size. See t he Relationship Table in t he Repair Method sect
ion.
Butt splice connectors are also supplied with red, blue or yellow coverings, which must be matched to the pre-terminated
wiri ng harnes s i nsulat ion color.
• The pre-terminat ed wiring harness(s) which are included in the wiring harness repai r kit
• The part number of t he pre-terminated wiring harness
• The let ter showing the extractor tip which must be used to remove t hi s type of electrical connector terminal
• Those electrical connector terminals which are gold
Some of the pre-terminated wiring harness(s) have seals installed to the insulation for sealed connector applications. It is
essential for prevention of moisture ingress that a sealed pre-terminated wiri ng harness must be used where a sealed
terminal was removed.
& cAUTION: Where the repair procedure indicates that a glue lined heat shrink sleeve should be applied, apply
suffi cient heat to the glue lined heat shrink to melt the glue in order to provide a water tight seal. Do not over heat the
glue lined heat shrink sleeve so that the wiring harness insulation becomes damaged.
Two sizes of heat shrink sleeving are supplied in the wiring harness repai r kit. Each heat shrink sleeve contains a sealant
glue. These must be used when connecting wiring hamess(s) or electrical connector t erminal(s) at all times. The smaller
diameter heat shrink sleeve is to be used wit h the red and blue butt splice connectors and the large r diam ete r sleeve
with the yellow butt splice connectors.
For ease and speed, some of the pre-t enninated wiring hamess(s) may already have t he insulat ion partly stripped at the
splice end. If the repa i r require s insu la t ion to be st ripp ed from the cable, refer to the Relationship Table for the corTect
length of insulation to be stripped.
The Pre-Tenn inat ed Wiring Hamess(s) illustration shows the electrical connector terminal type, the part number of the pre-
te rminat ed wiring harness and the let ter of the extractor tip which must be used to extract the electrical connector tenninal
from the connector housi ng. Additionally, those electrical connector termi nal (s) which are gold are identified, all others
are therefore, tinned and not gold.
A sele ction of colored sleeves are contained in the wiring harness repair kit for maintaining the wiring harness cable
ident ificat ion on the pre-termi nated wiring harness. Place the correct colored sleeve(s) over the pre-terminated wiring
harness insulation as near to the electrical connector as possible with the main wiring harness cable color nearest to the
electrical connector.
For example, if t he original wiring harness cable color is pink with a black trace put the pink wiring harness cable
identification sleeve on the pre-t erminated wiring harness first followed by a black sleeve, and slide both along the wiring
harness cable to the electrical connector terminal.

The moving ja w has an adjuster wheel which has a seri es of holes in it . Turning the wheel and placing the cable in the
matching size hole will automatically adjust the jaw to the correct pressure. Note that some wiring hamess(s) may have a
harder insulation and slight adj ustment of the wheel may be needed to make a clean st rip but exercise care not to damage
the wire.
Insulation Stripper

By press ing the ou te r edg es of t he wiri ng harness cable length st op tog et her the adjust er can be slid up or down the jaw.
This decreases or i ncreases the lengt h by which the wiring harness cable insulat ion will be strippedfrom the
pre-tenninated wiring harness or wiring harness wire. The adjuster has a posit ion indicat or to align with a graduated scale
and this sets the correct length in millimetres, of insulation to be stripped. The amount of insulat ion to be stripped is
shown in the Relationship Table.

By using the Relationship Table, the wiring harness conductor (wire) size can be related to a suitable pre-terminated
E
wiring harness by the color of the insulation. Also, the correct length of insulation to be stripped from the wiring harness
lead is identified.

Various types of electrical connector have seals installed internally or externally to prevent moist ure ingress. These
normally do not have to be removed but make sure that they are installed when the electrical connectors are connected.
The illust rat ions show examples of each tip used on diff erent types of electrical connector(s). There are a large number of
different types of electrical connector used on vehicles therefore only one example using each tip is shown. Technicians
experience and ju dgement will di ctate which type of tip should be used for those electrical connector(s) which are not
shown. Care should be exercised to avoid furt her damage when removing the terminals from the electrical connector.

Repair Procedure C
• CAUTIONS:
& Do not use crimping pliers, insulation strippers, butt splice connectors, heat shrink sleeves or pre-t erminated wiring
hamess(s) that are not supplied with the Jaguar wiring harness repair kit. Each part has been designed to be used
only wit h the other parts in this wiring harness repair kit.
& Where the repair procedur e indi cat es t hat a glue lined heat shrink sleeve should be applied, apply sufficient heat to
the glue lined heat shrink to melt the glue in order to provide a water tight seal. Do not over heat the glue lined heat
shri nk sleeve so that the wiring harness insulation becomes damaged.
It is not corTect to make more than five repair joints on the wiring harness to any electrical connector and if more damage
is found at the same electrical connector then a new wiring harness must be installe d.
• Remove the faulty terminal from the electrical connector using the extractor tool and corTect t ip . Make sure that any
anti-backoutdevice is released before trying to removethe terminal.
• & cAUTION: : A number of elect rical connect or tenninals are gold plated or gold flashed. When defective, they
must be installed with a gold pre-terminated wiring harness(s) from the wiring harness repair kit . It is not always
easy to identify the female as gold but the male pins are visuall y easier, therefore always check both male and
female tenninals to ident ify those which are gold. Under no circumstances are gold and tin terminals to be mixed
as t his will lead to early failure of the electrical contact .
• NOTE: Never use a harness lead with a smaller diameter than the original harness lead.
Select the corTect size and type of pre-t erminat ed wiring harness and butt splice connector from the wiring
harness repair kit.
• Usingthe wire cutter onthe strippni gtool, cut the pre-terminatedwiring harness and the harness cable to the
requir ed lengt h.
• • NOTE: See i llu st rat ion : Stripping Insulation
From the Relat ionship Table, find t he correct lengt h of insulation to be stripped from the pre-terminated wiring
harness and set the adj ustable cable length stop to the corTect lengt h. Pla ce the pre -t erm inated wiring harness in
t he wire st ripper and remove the insulat ion.
• Put the cable identificat ion sleeve(s) on to the wiring harness with the main cable colour nearest to t he termi nal.
• During t his next step do not overtighten. Place the selected butt splice connector in the crimping tool, matchi ng the
aperture and the butt connector colours. Make sure t hat the window i ndentat ion in the butt connector is resting
over t he guide bar on t he lower jaw . Part ia ll y clo se t he gri p u nt il the butt connectoris securely held in the aperture.
This will give support to the but t connector while the pre-terminat ed wiring harness is inserted into it.
• • NOTE: See i llu st rat ion : Spice Correctly Located
I nsert the pre-te rminate d wiring harness into the butt connector and make sure that the wire is against the wire
stop. Close the grip firmly, crimping the lead to the butt connector. When t he handles have been compl et ely
closed the butt connector will be freed from the tool as the handles are released. If the handles have not been
completely closed then the jaws will hold the butt connector and it cannot be r·emoved from the t ool until the
crimp is fully made by closing the handles completely.
• Make sure t hat the harness cable has been squarely cut and the correct length of insulat ion removed. If more t han
one splice is needed the butt connectorsmust be not be crimpedto the wiring harness at the same dist ance from
the connector. The splices must be staggered to prevent a bulk of splices in the same area of the wiring harness.
• It is preferable to cover the butt splice joint with heat shri nk sl eeve. Thi s is desirable not essential, except where
the electrical connector is a sealed electri ca l conne ct or. Use t h e s m a l le r diamet er s l eeve for r·ed and blu e
pre- t erm ina te d wiring hamess(s) and the large diameter sleeve for the yellow pre-terminated wiring hamess(s). It
is advisable to place the heat shrink over the completed joint but in some instances the sleeve will not pass
over the terminal. Check, and if requi red, place the correct size sleeve onto the harness cable or pre-terminated
wiring harness before crimping the but t splice to the wiring harness.
• Place the harness cable in to the butt splice with the splice windowover the guide bar. Make sure t hat the cable
harness wire is against the stop in the butt splice, crimp the butt splice connector to the wiring harness.
• Gently pull the harness cables each side of the butt splice to make sure that a secure joi nt has been made.
• A w ARNI NG: Do not use a naked fl ame in areas where fuel or oil have been spil t . Clean the area of residual
oil and fuel and wait unt il the fuel spi ll has fully evaporat ed.
• CAUTIONS:
& When using a heat source make sure that it is localised and causes no damage to surrounding materials.
& Where the repair procedure indi cates that a gl ue lin ed heat shri nk sleeve should be appli ed, apply suff icie nt
heat to the glue li ned heat shrink to melt the glue in order to provide a water tight seal. Do not over heat the glue
lined heat shrink sleeve so that the wiring harness insulat ion becomesdamaged.
Using a suitable heat source, shrink the sleeve over the butt splice.
• I f further pre-terminated wiring hamess(s) are to be installed to the same electrical connector, make sure that
the lead is cut at a di ff erent length to t he previous j oint . This makes sure t hat the splices will, where possible, be
staggered on t he wiring harness and prevent a bulk of splices in one area.
• When al l of the spli ces have been made, fit the terminal(s) to t he electrical connector, taking care t hat the
terminal s are correct ly ori entat ed.
• I nst all the wiri ng harn ess cover and secure with adhesive electrical tape. Do not cover the wiri n g harness right to
t he electrical connector as the t erminals must have a l it t le movement and not be fi rmly bound to the electrical
connector or wiring harness. Make sure that the cable identifica t ion sleeve(s) are showing at the wiring harness
electrical connector.
