DETERMINE YOUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY!

“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all” a

famous quote from Aristotle that somehow connects to the idea and meaning of

“Philosophy” which states that a “love of wisdom”. Educating the mind alone would

simply means knowledge but educating the mind and the heart is the true essence of

wisdom…a love of wisdom. As a teacher, we should touch the mind and the heart

of every learner just to make a difference. To attained that, it deeply rooted from the

educational philosophies we applied in our classroom especially in the teaching and

learning process.

Doing this activity made me happy, enthusiastic, and overwhelmed for I have

discovered other philosophies I adhered most aside being a constructivist in nature

especially in the classroom settings. A bunch of statements that made me reflects on

what kind of teacher I was inside the classroom. It gives me an insight on what teaching

strategies and teaching methods to apply for my diverse learners having diverse

backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and multiple intelligences. In the activity, I found out

that I am also tend to be a progressivist, existentialist, and a behaviorist teacher and

with a little essentialist and perennialist as well.

Being a progressivist teacher, I really love to have an active participation and

interaction among my learners through experimentation and group dynamics. Students

should also be responsible in their own learning. However, they must have a freedom to
choose on their own learning style. As an existentialist teacher, I will give them freedom

provided it will not deviate from the expected outcome. I will recognize their own

initiatives to achieve the result. Making them responsible and proud for their own

decision.

Meanwhile, I am also accustomed of being a behaviorist teacher. For me, part of

learners’ knowledge, belief, customs, and traditions as well as his/her character is a

result from his/her environment. For environment plays a great role towards students

learning. Before pandemic, I used to be particular with cleanliness inside the classroom.

I will not start the discussion if the classroom was messy. And I will see to it that the

chairs were arranged. Also, it’s imperative for me that proper ventilation and lightings

our classroom must have. I used to give rewards and reinforcements towards my class

as well as punishment if they did not perform well with their task.

On the other hand, being a perennialist teacher, I do always seek for truth and in

the same way I will also let my students be responsible in searching for truth. I am so

fond of the history especially in the history of the world. Moreover, being a Christian and

a devoted Catholics, I will always integrate moral teachings based on Scriptures most

especially in teaching good manners in values education. As an essentialist teacher for

me, learning the basic course like reading, writing and arithmetic is a must for the

learners.

In a classroom set up, having one educational philosophy is good however, due
to diversity of learners, we teachers must also flexible. We should put together two or

more philosophies to address the needs of our learners.
