Keys Problem Set

1. A marine engine propeller shaft is connected to a hub using a brass shear pin. The document asks to calculate the diameter of the shear pin that would fail under a torque of 100 N-m, given the pin's ultimate shear strength is 320 MPa. 2. A 10 x 10 x 75 mm square key is used to transmit 1100 N-m of torque from a 60 mm diameter solid shaft. It is necessary to determine if the given length is sufficient considering the permissible shear and crushing stresses of the materials. 3. The document provides specifications for a cast-iron pulley on a 1 3/4 inch diameter 1045 steel shaft, connected using a key. It asks to calculate the required length

1.

The propeller of a marine engine has 40mm diameter hub, which is fasted to the shaft of 32 mm
diameter by using brass shear pin. If the overload occurs at the propeller, the pin will shear thus
avoiding damage to the rest of the mechanism. Calculate the diameter of the shear pin, which
will fail at a torque of 100 N-m with ultimate shear strength of 320 MPa.
2. A square key of 10 x 10 x 75 mmm dimension is required to transmit 1100 N-m torque from a
60 mm diameter solid shaft. Determine whether the length is sufficient or not if the permissible
shear stress and crushing intensities limited to 60 and 170 MPa respectively.
3. A cast-iron pulley transmits 65.5 hp at 1750 rpm. The 1045 as-rolled shaft to which it is to be
keyed is 1 ¾ in. in diameter; key material, cold-drawn 1020. Compute the length of flat key and
of square key needed.
4. A 3 ¼-in. shaft transmits with medium shock 85 hp at 100 rpm. Power is received through
sprocket (annealed nodular iron 60-45-10) keyed to the shaft of cold-rolled AISI 1040 (10%
work), with a key of cold-finished B1113. What should be the length of (a) a square key? (b) a
flat key?
