ABSTRACT
For every student, each has a different way of learning or receiving information that
they can apply in their lives. This is called a study habit where an individual’s behavior is in
relation to studying and is a combination of study methods and skills. The research aims to
discover the different factors that comes with this situation and how could this situation affect
the regular study habits of an average senior high school student and them personally. The
researchers would also want to know a good and a bad study environment as well as the
problems that affect a student’s study habit in order for everyone to know how we can help
students maintain a good study habit and at the same time adapt to the recent changes that had
occurred. This study can likewise help students in their future careers. After gathering the
results from structured interviews and open-ended survey’s, the researchers have found
positive and negative results from the respondents based on their study habits during a
pandemic. Notably, most of the respondents were adversely affected because of the online
classes, given that the said mode of education is soundly reliant on the utilization of electronic
devices which can cause problems and diversions for the students as they would be tempted to
procrastinate rather than to focus on their studies. To conclude, the researchers found out that
the students still have a positive effect in studying with face-to-face classes and are still coping
with the changes in online learning. With the data gathered, each student has a different study
habit and practices which they use in order for them to learn and reflect on.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The researchers focused on the topic “Factors Affecting Students’ Study Habits during
a Pandemic as Perceived by Senior High School Students”. In the year 2019, the so-called
“Coronavirus” or COVID-19 was born which led to a pandemic and a worldwide problem.
Affecting people from first to third world countries, to businesses, unemployment, and students
in their studies. To be thorough, we will elucidate how important study habits are and how the
Having a study habit is a skill, which will benefit an individual in his or her goal to

exactly the pandemic affected them? By changing the everyday life of a student; students go
to school to learn but also to interact with schoolmates too, while interacting they can study as
a group, face to face. Studies show that it can be a mental health issue not seeing peers in
socializing with different people online and in person. Students tend to still adapt to these
changes and they struggle to do so. These problems must be researched and solved in order for
us to know how we can help the students maintain a good study habit and at the same time
adapt to the recent changes that happened in the past few months and this study can also help

1.2 SETTING OR CONTEXT (FRAME OF REFERENCE)
This study will be conducted in MAPÚA University Makati Campus particularly on
the senior high school students that had taken online classes because of the pandemic. The
study targets the different strands of senior high school students and their study habits since
each strand differs from one another. Since we are all under quarantine and face to face classes
are not allowed, the researchers decided to use different social media platforms and an online
survey to conduct the research. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there is a huge impact on
the students’ study habits and because of this they tend to struggle coping with these changes.
Anxiety, depression, and other factors may be experienced by a student because of these
changes. A study habit of students can either develop their character as an individual overall
or a huge problem that may affect a student’s future. Good study habits can increase students'
confidence, competence, and self-esteem. It also reduces anxiety about tests and deadlines by
developing good study habits. The fact that most students had lost their good study habits
because of the recent changes, that is why the researchers would want to know the factors that
affect their study habits and the effects of it to the students and at the same time give solutions
efficient study habits produces positive academic performance while inefficient study habits
leads to academic failure and according to the same research, gender has a significant impact

In this study, the researchers aim to discover what the different factors are that comes
with this unique situation that now not only makes the students study their lessons at home,
but also be taught at home divided by a screen, which could affect the regular study habits of

particularly their study habits. This study intended to determine the factors affecting senior
high school students' study habits during a pandemic, also to answer these following
questions:
1. What are the things that usually distract senior high school students from studying?
2. What are the effects of pandemic on the study habits of the senior high school

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES
A. Factors Effecting on Study Habits
A study was conducted in 2016 to gauge the effects of both gender and socio-economic
status on the study habits of both boys and girls of the Government Girls and Boys schools of
the Amroha district in Uttar Pradesh, India. Its results have shown that although both gender
and Socio-economic status have an effect, only gender is seen to have been a significant factor
B. Factors Affecting the Study Habits of Grade Eleven Students in One National
High School in Pangasinan, Philippines
(2019), the researcher has arrived to a conclusion that their sample size, which are Grade 11
students, does belong to below-average families based on their monthly family income and
that most of them have siblings attending school. Because of this situation, the researcher’s
respondents are facing work and financial instability which led them to take away their
concentration in studying.
5
The researcher also discovered that the respondents are applying incorrect and weak
study habits. Since the greater part of the respondents never do studying at home and do not
Based on the results, the researcher showed that less study hour leads to poor grades
and performance. The majority of the respondents do not have a time table for studying and
have other distractions such as family stress and addiction to social media.
The factors that convincingly affect the study habits of Grade 11 students are home
setting, peer pressure and social media addiction, work and financial instability and family
stress. These factors do belong to the external factor which the students are now handling.
According to Morgan Library-Learning Center Things may feel out-of-control right now.
Students may be facing a lot of unknowns and disruptions. Try to be patient with yourself, your
classmates, and your professors during this time. Take care of your wellbeing first. Making a
plan and adjusting your studying may help you feel even a little sense of control. This article
shows that having good study habits will help us in our online learning and also prevent us
from further problems. There are a lot of ways to help students to be able to study properly
According to a Vietnamese Researcher Tran Trung and others, a student’s daily life in
learning in schools has shifted dramatically because of the pandemic. It says in their study that
it is very different how studying during a holiday versus in a pandemic. During holidays it is

psychological issues can affect the performance of a student. With various other stresses,
general living issues may provide obstacles in his/her learning. Socio-cultural issues like
discrimination and racism can impact a student’s emotional wellbeing further magnified by the
difficulty in learning the Japanese language (Lee, 2017). These challenges, along with many
other issues, are amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Access to proper equipment,
technology and other tools is a significant advantage when it comes to learning. Way before
the COVID-19 pandemic, students who lack access to good internet and computers already lag
academically (Blagg & Luetmer, 2020). This article shows factors that affect students on their

F. 7 Ways Students Can Maintain Good Study Habits During COVID-19
According to Bresnick (2020), there are seven (7) possible ways or strategies for
students to have good study habits. First is staying organized by keeping track on the dates and
courses given. Second is don’t multitask since switching between tasks will surely make the
brain more confused and rather than finishing the tasks early, it will end up with low scores.
Third is making the most of video lectures for the students to be able to repeat and understand
the lessons well. Fourth is setting a schedule, like the first way this will save time for the
students since it will keep you organized and might help you manage time regularly. Fifth is
swap out study strategies, changes might not be that easy however old study habits might now
be applicable for now. Trying new study strategies will help students. Sixth way is
collaborating remotely or to have communication with other students through online using
electronic devices. Lastly or the seventh way is staying connected to others via video chats and
In an article written by Christopher Benitez (2016), he has provided seven (7) factors
that prevent one person from studying better. These are giving in to procrastination, studying
in a loud setting, keeping up with discomfort, poor lighting, poor sleeping habits, harmless
example could be your smartphone. It can offer you with hours of distraction through social
media apps, mobile games, text messaging, and music. As an outcome, it is a lot tougher to
fight the calls of procrastination than it used to be. It is scientifically verified that the human

Be cautious of listening to white noise in a challenge to drown out the real noisemakers.
Although natural sounds such as falling rain and rustling leaves can bring relaxation, studies
show that background noise can weaken your attention. Studies expose that white noise can
even worsen stress-induced conditions like migraines, high blood pressure, and even coronary
diseases.
Studying in an awkward position will not only disturb your posture, but it will also
undesirably influence your ability to concentrate. For example, studying in your bed may be
the reason for you to twist and turn often – not to mention it might lead to a stiff neck.
Another good study area is when it is well-lit. If you make it a routine of studying with
dim lighting, not only will you pointlessly strain your eyes, you will also cause sleepiness.
It is important to enhance your capability to stay awake, but you should also recognize
how to get good sleep. Keep in mind that sleep is a vital method for memory retention. Getting
decent sleep will also boost your energy, mood, and focus on the next day.
Some friends do not always make great study-mates. They could even be your number
one cause of disturbance. But with the precise approach, they can also be your main
inspirations for studying well. Keep in mind that you should also advance your socialization

The arrangement of furniture in a room can disturb your focus. For example, having

learning efficiency. Being confined up with no space to stretch will also make it difficult for
According to a study by Yap (2019), the researchers gauged the effect of time
management, teaching strategies of professors, studying environment on the study habits and
academic performance of fifty Accountancy students, ten (10) students from each year level,
The results show that on Time management, “Students differ in managing time when
it comes to their age and sex” Because the older students are able to divide their time more
wisely compared to those who are younger, as well as that female students are better at time
Next, on teaching strategies of the professors, the respondents differ more in age rather
than gender on the assessment of their professors’ teaching strategies, however they do agree
that a professor that encourages students to study on their own has an effect on their own study
habits.
Lastly, on the studying environment, “The students moderately agreed that studying
environment is also a factor that affects their study habits”, they also agreed that they would
rather study in a quiet area with good direct lighting, good temperature.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY
3.1 ABSTRACT
As you can see the major aspect in this research on “Factors Affecting Students’ Study
Habits during a Pandemic as Perceived by Senior High School Students” is that the respondents
tend to be affected negatively in terms of comparing it to traditional classes and find it positive
at the same time in cases such as comfortability yet still manage to cope with their studies but
still find it difficult. Having study habits during a pandemic which led to online or at home
3.2 INTRODUCTION
The general summary of this research shows here the respondents at Mapua University
(Makati Campus) are being interviewed about how the pandemic or the COVID-19 affected
their study habits. Since online classes started, many students suffered with their mental health
and many were left behind due to lack of resources or materials just to get on track with the
new system.
3.3 METHODOLOGY
The researchers used a non-probability sampling technique which is the snowball
sampling to address the respondents of this study. This became the most convenient for the
researchers since they drew their interviewees from acquaintances and recruits of their
acquaintances in order to reach the total number of desired interviewees. Meanwhile, the
11
researchers used interviews as their data gathering method. This method is also known to be
Some of the researchers may have informed the interviewees, prior to the scheduled
interviews, that the interview will be recorded and that their personal data, which includes their
name, year level, and section, shall be obtained from them. The researchers decided to take
note of these data since their age and gender would not matter.
As for the procedures done, the researchers conducted their interviews through Zoom
and Messenger. The interviewers greeted the interviewees and asked if they were ready to start.
After confirming, the interviewer asks for their personal data then proceeds to ask the five (5)
uniform questions already prepared before looking for interviewees. One of the interviewers
on the other hand gave additional questions which could also be useful in determining a more
specific answer from the interviewees. Afterwards, the interviewers thanked the interviewees
For additional information, the interview questions prepared includes the following:
1. What is your definition of study habits and what are some of your study habits?
3. What do you think distracts you the most when you study?
5. How do you think did this Pandemic affect your study habits?

In question number 2, the majority answers on why study habits are important because
of its benefits which are productivity, helping you to be ready for the future, and making you
more focused. Few answers are about having consistency, being comfortable, and developing
confidence.
There are four (4) interviewees answered about productivity in which study habits will
help you produce more work efficiently and have minimum waste of energy. There are three
(3) interviewees who responded about the future, stating that having study habits will help you
prepare for the future and achieve your dreams. One of those three (3) even mentioned that
study habits would help his or her family in the future. There are also four (4) interviewees that
answered about focus where they said study habits will help them focus more on academics,
and it would help you learn how to manage distractions and have good grades. There are two
(2) interviewees answered that study habits are important because it can give you confidence.
Since studying will prepare you for the upcoming tests, giving you enough information and
helps you remember those. The interviewees acknowledge that with the right study habits you
don’t need to stay up all night and study, which leads to building up confidence in answering
tests. Another two (2) interviewees answered about being comfortable, where you can choose
the time you want to study and be organized. In addition to this, an interviewee answered that
having study habits that you are comfortable with will help you understand your lessons well.
Lastly, one (1) interviewee answered consistency, which he or she mentioned if you want to
have consistent results and grades, you need to have consistent study habits.
15
Overall, study habits are important as stated by the interviewees seeing that it is very
beneficial. Developing good study habits and finding which one you are comfortable with, will
In question 3, which asks the respondents on what factors distract them the most while
studying, and their answers commonly focus on two (2) different factors, friends and
notifications from social media, and this may mainly be because for social media notifications
and friends, they may be compelled to check and to respond to them because they want to keep
their notifications clear, or that it could be a form of procrastination that keeps them from doing
their tasks, other answers include games, gadgets, and other recreational activities, which can
be attributed to Procrastination, because when they feel like they need a break, they feel
16
compelled to do at least one of these activities, and that may keep them from going back to
their school tasks. One answer that does not fall under these reasons is the Slow internet
For the fourth question, the interviewee answers the question “What is a good study
environment for you?”. The researchers discovered that what these students prefer to study
with music in their designated place of study wherein it is quiet, of no distractions, and
comfortable. A few may have included that they prefer somewhere where the temperature is
cool enough to keep them working and one may have specified that they prefer to have dark
17
lighting with just their lamp providing them light. Some may prefer to have their things or
materials close or near them so that they are not disturbed just by going away from their
designated place of study to get what they need. And lastly, only one has a different answer
which is the classroom. This student considers a classroom to be a good study environment
because they believe that being in a classroom gives them enough challenge and motivation to
study. A common theme found in answers to this question is the need for a designated place
18
For question 5, it is found that all respondents have been affected in some sort of way
by the home environment they were supposed to learn and study in due to the pandemic, and
for the respondents who responded negatively to the question, a common theme is that they
mostly seem to mention a developed laziness due to the feeling of being “At-home”, which
makes them less motivated to do their requirements because they feel like they shouldn’t be
working in such an environment, another one of the At-home habits is that due to respondents
have easier access to their personal gadgets, or other recreational activities they are more likely
to be distracted by these factors and therefore procrastinate. For those who respond positively,
they mention the ease of access they now have when attending classes, as without the need to
travel to school, all they would need to do is wake-up and then attend classes, with possible
preparations in-between. Another positive effect that was mentioned was the increased use of
technology in their studies, that instead of writing their notes on notebooks, everything can be
19
Figure 2. Negative Feedbacks in Study Habits During a Pandemic
3.5 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, most of the respondents’ study habits were affected negatively. Many of
them would relate factors such as the nature of online classes compelling students to stay at
home while also being obliged to comply with requirements and studies. Another common
cause of this would be the availability of personal gadgets in such a setting such as online
classes, given that the said mode of education relies heavily on the utilization of electronics,
which can cause distractions for the students as they would be tempted to do other recreational

CONCLUSION
4.1 INTRODUCTION
Due to the confusion and disruption done by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine
government had put the country into quarantine. The quarantine prevents the schools across the nation
from functioning normally, resulting in the need for online classes. The new educational system, which
20
is using online platforms, made a huge amount of feedback. This part includes the ingeminate
4.2 CONCLUSION
In conclusion the researchers have found positive and negative results from the
respondents based on their study habits during pandemic. In the researchers’ findings, the
research has managed to answer the following questions: (1) What are the things that usually
distract senior high school students from studying? (2) What are the effects of the pandemic
on the study habits of the senior high school students? and (3) Is there any effect of these
study habits to a student? Each of them has some similarities while also having a variety of
distinctions in their answers on the research. Study habits are significant as stated by the
interviewees seeing that it is very beneficial to develop good study habits because it will
surely help them in attaining high grades and an efficient lifestyle however, most of their
answers gave them good results in their grades back when the mode of education was the
face-to-face format. Notably most of the respondents were adversely affected because of the
online classes, given that the said mode of education is soundly reliant on the utilization of
electronic devices which can cause problems and diversions for the students as they would be
CHAPTER 5
RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 INTRODUCTION
The researchers believe that certain parts and chapters of this study raises several
questions and hypotheses that may call for further research about the different views of this
topic or study and to address more concerns that this study was not able to cover due to time
21
constraints. In this chapter, the recommendations are drawn from the methodology of this study
which involves the perception of the senior high school students from MAPÚA University
Makati Campus. These recommendations are based on the conclusions and value of this study.
5.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
The researchers have provided a list of limitations, as well as recommendations for
future studies to focus on. They also included who are the people that are recommended to do
• Sampling Technique
Given that the sampling technique of this study was one of non-probability, chosen due
to constraints faced during the current study, the sample may be subject to bias from the
researchers. Which is evident in the composition of the sample, as eleven (11) out of the fifteen
(15) respondents are from Grade 11, and due to that, it may not accurately represent the target
• Sample
For the sample itself, a total of fifteen (15) were chosen to represent the entire MAPÚA
Makati SHS student body, this number was chosen because it was feasible for the researchers
to interview this amount of people, while also getting multiple opinions towards the research
questions. It is a limitation in this study simply because it is small, a future study may make
use of a larger sample size to get a better image of the effects the pandemic has on students’
study habits.
• Methodology
22
Regarding methodology, if in future studies a larger sample size is to be used, a
different instrument should be used to more efficiently gather data, the researchers suggest
using a survey.
The researchers recommend this study for students to know what are the factors that
will be affecting them for the whilst studying or learning during a pandemic crisis. Knowing
what to avoid or prevent especially concerns the mental health of the learner.
• Teachers
in the first few months of the school year. Especially for the students who are not privileged to
study online; not fully ready yet coping up his studies so the student can learn.
The researchers recommend a short dry run period with a minimum of one (1) week
before the school year's official start, which only the people in power within an institution
could do. The dry run functions as a transitioning period for the students for the online
classroom setup. Only the institutions of the school have the power to conduct this dry run.
This dry run will let the students blend in with the new educational system which is online
class.
• Future Researchers
The aim of this study is to see how various learning and coping mechanisms affect
students in online classes. These tactics are essential for students to cope with and earn the
high grades they deserve because they help them maintain knowledge. These techniques can
23
also aid a student's learning and comprehension of a particular subject or topic. There is a desire
to see how there are effective and healthy ways to improve and change a student's ability to
retain knowledge over time. These recommendations come from the researchers' observation
and interpretation of the students' explanation on how they will sustain information for the long
run.

APPENDIX B
Raw Data
• Respondent 1 (Grade 12)
1. My definition of study habits is that this is how you can learn the fastest. Some of my
study habits is usually group studies or solo. So I tend to study with friends. It is most
effective so they can ask me questions and I can also ask them questions, and when I’m
solo I usually just watch youtube on how to do it and etc.
2. Well, having a study habit is... again the most effective way to study, it is how you are
able to learn the fastest. That is why this is important. Once you have your own study
habits you can learn easier and you are more comfortable in learning things.
3. The most distracting thing when I am studying is usually my friends when they invite
me to play or something like that.
4. Well, a good study environment is usually a quiet place and with that has chill music
or in a library with friends.
5. Hmm... it really didn’t affect my study habits that much since I usually do study on my
own but it affected on our group study with my friends. I don't usually have group
studies anymore with my friends. That's how it affected my study habits.
6. ADDITIONAL QUESTION (Does it really affect you negatively or just a little
bit?) No, it really doesn't affect that much since having a study habit is your own way
of studying. So it really just depends on how you can manage to do what you are- your
study habit is.
29
3. Well uh if there are lots of things to do I would tend to procrastinate and I would cram
if the deadline is near, when I'm lazy that makes me distracted from doing all of my
work.
4. Well like a room with silence is a good study environment for me. No distractions, no
noises, just a room with silence.
5. Well, it affected my study habits negatively. Since we’re only studying at our houses,
i tend to cram a lot since i won't have to travel to go to school or i don't need to pass
my homework; for example, having a homework where you need write it on a paper
and you need to pass it exactly 8:30 in the morning, you won’t need to do that, you
won't need to do it the day before. Sometimes I would do my requirements an hour
before the deadline. So it really affected my study habits negatively.
6. ADDITIONAL QUESTION (without the pandemic, do you think your study
habits will be not affected negatively face-to-face? Or are there some negatives
along the field?) Well, I can't avoid procrastination because it's normal for me. And as
much as possible, I tried to be organized and do my homeworks days before the
deadline during face-to-face classes.
30
my headphones and one lamp to light up my workspace. As much as possible I like to
keep my place as dark when I study.
5. Personally speaking, I don’t think the pandemic had too many significant impacts with
my study habits because i am still able to do the same old study habits i did when there
were still traditional classes (face-face classes) so other than that, I guess now I’m just
more prone to being distracted easily because laptop is in front of me and games are
just in my desktop..that might be the only affect that the pandemic had.
6. ADDITIONAL QUESTION (So in general, the pandemic affected you a little bit
some of negativity, not too much right?) Uh, personally it’s neutral because although
I do have distractions pretty much always beside me somehow my grades increased
because I'm able to become more comfortable while studying. I guess it's a neutral thing
that not too many positives, not too many negatives happened.
7. ADDITIONAL (If you compare online classes, like what you said that with online
classes your grades have increased right? Compare online to face-face classes,
which do you prefer?) When it comes to being generally comfortable, I like online
classes because I'm at the comfort of my home and I can adjust all the things necessary
to make my workplace as comfortable as possible. But when it comes to taking notes
per se uhm or listening to the teacher, traditional classes is still the way to go because
in online classes I tend to not listen to my teacher too much and just going to the
powerpoint, take notes and be done with it.
31
2. How you study is very important because, aside from the class itself, this is the part
where you actually learn. Having your own study habits that you are comfortable with
really changes a lot of things. It makes you understand your lessons easier and it makes
studying less of a burden and more of a thing you slowly enjoy.
3. The main thing that distracts me when I study is my phone and whenever I study I
usually take breaks in between. Before, I would use my phone during that break and
whenever I start using my phone I cannot stop using it, and I end up not studying at all.
This is the reason why I usually keep my phone or my laptop away when I study to
avoid this from happening.
4. A good study environment for me is away for my bed or anywhere I can easily fall
asleep. What I consider a good study environment is a table, my table, which should be
clean and a chair that has a small pillow to prevent my back from hurting. I also keep
a water bottle near me when I study and part of that good study environment is a place
where my phone or laptop isn't.
5. Personally this pandemic didn't necessarily affect my study habits, but instead it greatly
affected my study mindset. I became less and less more motivated to study because I
had nothing to look forward to in school, and there was no fine line between school and
home.
32
transcript everything that the teacher is saying. Or basically screenshot some of the
PPTs when it's not too fast of a discussion.
2. It's important because you- we- in our own way we can use this. You know study habits
are based on our comfortability that’s why- it's based on you on how you study. So if
it's effective, of course you’re gonna keep doing it again and again. That’s why it’s
important, ‘cause it's gonna be helpful for your studies and your comfortability as well.
3. Uh... hmm... of course I’m in the room all day and when it- when the discussion gets
bored some applications in the same laptop (you) can’t really ignore. Like Valorant, or
LoL, or any type of game, Osu. Like you just can’t ignore them while you’re bored in
class. So maybe that’s one of the distractions and sometimes when people chat me if
I’m up to play.
4. For me a good study environment is, I would go for a classroom because there I can
put myself in a mindset that I’m there to study, this is where I learn. But compared to
when I’m at home, there’s the bed. There’s comfortability. The- I am... uh... My brain
is designed to think that when I’m at home, I’m here to relax. That's why I don’t think
online classes are that effective for me because I am within my comfortability range
compared to being at school where I am constantly being challenged and uh motivated
by the people around me.
5. Like I said, now that I am studying at home it's very hard to get rid of my ‘at home’
habits where I usually chill or relax. That’s why both of my habits clash all the time
because I can’t get my time management right. Uh... sleep, sleep- sleeping is so hard
because it’s either you do the assignment or you just sleep right through it. I don’t-
yeah. It really affected my study habits to be honest. Can’t even really tell if I’m
actually studying to learn or studying to pass. That is all. Thank you.
33
3. It's definitely the social media, because that's why I turn my WiFi off, is because I don't
want to get tempted to browse Facebook or watch YouTube every other minute.
4. A good study environment is a peaceful environment where I'm alone, and where I can
read the word out loud so you know I can digest it more.
5. I think the pandemic made me rely on watching multiple online video lessons since I
can't consult anyone face to face which is more difficult but there's not much options
either.
34
and you’re being constantly given deadlines for every week, and you know, it’s
honestly kinda stressful. So, when I wanna study for a test, uh… I really have to do it
as quick as I can to... be able to accomplish more of my requirements… cause the
deadlines are really, you know… close and, you know other- other stuff in life that
could- you need to take care of.
35
dishes, how to- and a lo- bunch of other stuff that- that- that- a bunch of new stuff that-
that are going to be presented to you in the future and so, yeah. Lear- learning, yun nga
eh, learning does not stop in the classroom, yun... that’s all for your second question.
3. I’m a very techy guy, so I think it’s the gadgets, the gadget stuff. Uhm… Not the
desktop or phone I use when I- when I join the sessions it’s- it’s mainly the other stuff
like, like for example, when I’m using my- when I’m using my... laptop, the phone
distracts me and… and yeah mainly the phone, and the other- other- other factors in
my life, that… that- that- that- uhm… not bother, but I have to consider when going
through online classes, yeah… that’s all.
4. I’m just going to base my answer off of my setup. Uhm… is mainly, you have all your
things around you. It doesn’t matter if… if it’s... if it’s messy, it doesn’t matter if it’s
shiny, shiny clean, it doesn’t- doesn’t matter, as long as you have all the things you
need right… uhm… right- right beside you or you don’t even have to go to the next
room just to get it, you’ll be fine, because… the thing is efficiency, learning com-
learning is all- is well I think, is always paired with efficiency. Uhm… you- you- you-
you uhm… learning is based on my quote philosophy, is uhm… learning things fast
because I’m afr- ah- I want to learn things fast- is learning things fast and efficiently.
What I mean by that is yes, I’m learning it fast, and I’m grasping knowledge, not “I’m
just learning it fast and not gaining any stuff” so… so uhm, yeah, speed and efficiency
are key when it comes to the setup, so that’s why having everything in your mind right
there where you left it is… essential to gaining a... Uhm… ah… nice study ha.. Study
a… environment or… yun.
5. The main thing is, this is pure subjective on my part, I don’t like the- the feel of being
at home and doing work, I just don’t like it because… what do you call this, it doesn’t-
it doesn’t give you the external environmental factor of… of… alertness, so to speak,
if you’re confined at home while doing work you- you’re bound to… you- you’re
bound to experience the sort of laziness uhm… this is pur- this is purely subjective ah?
I don’t know with you, or any other people. So, so you’re bound to feel laziness “ah-
the- ah- it- it- it’s cold, it’s- it’s- it’s very tiring” even though you’re not doing anything
but, on the other hand, when you have to wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning just to
go to school, tha- that wakes your senses and gears you up for… the whole day, I
36
mean… yeah, fo- fo- for, for the sixteen years that I’ve been alive- for the sixteen years
that I’ve been alive uhm… I- I- I mainly- I mainly seek the excitement of going out and
doing stuff, but as the quarantine goes on though, you sort of get used to it yo- you start
to develop uhm… norms or habits that- that- that ano, that- that cater to our situation-
yeah there are- there are thimes- there are thimes? There are times that- that force you
to go- to go to sleep when… whe- when uhm… it’s not time to sleep, for example, class
hours, but I’m- give it- give it ano- give it another year uhm… le- let’s hope not, give
it another year and the way you get used to the old system, you’ll get used to the- used
to the new system, which is now online education.
37
1. Hmmm ok uh... what I think about study habits is that it's like the methods you do
when... it's like your method of studying. For example is... whenever you study, you do
something first to prepare yourself before you study, then when you study, you feel
more relaxed and comfortable... and... study habits that I do... well... I just... well I can't
really name any study habits that I'm aware of but I think it's probably eating before
sitting and... eating or drinking water before sitting in the computer and go to class...
and.. yeah that's probably it actually... yeah.
2. Well I’m not really familiar with the topic so I'll be really blunt, uhh... I think it's
because... well like I said earlier it's like your way of studying without it, you might not
feel comfortable yourself while studying at all so, with the help of study habits, you
can... well you can collect yourself and be organised and yeah... I- yeah, that's what I
think about it.
3. Mmm... uhh... yeah, social media, and games and stuff.
4. Uhh, to be honest, anywhere with a chair and, since we're online class, in the
computer... preferably- wait, nevermind. Preferably in... in my... in a room, with a
desktop and a chair and... and proper air- uh... air-conditioning, that's it.
5. Mmm... hmm wait gimme a sec uh... I think not much. It's the same thing anyway...
Well, aside from the fact that I just have to wake ups- wake up and go straight to the
PC and start class. Well, if there was a difference, I'd say... I'm not that- uh... compared
to normal- normal days where you had to wake up and be on a rush to go to school
when you- and... compared to now, you just have to wake up and not worry about travel
and traffic, you just sit down and start class. Compared to that, well, it's kinda more...
uhh... what's the word... uhh... ahh... easier- easy, more easy. It's easier than the
normal... than the normal... yeah.
38
2. Ok umm.. for me, studying is important because I have a lot of goals in the future that
I want to accomplish. I believe studying will make me reach that goal and it will make
my family happy.
3. Umm… right now, the things that are distracting me from studying is first… um...
things that I need to do at- at home like chores for my family and etc. and… things that
distract me because of me are probably because of gaming… um… reading random
books, and… drawing.
4. Umm… a good study environment, for me, is… usually umm… around 12 o’clock
midnight until morning because it’s the most quiet… it’s the quietest… day- time of
the day or usually, when I'm outside or in Tagaytay, I usually go outside beside the tree
and study there.
5. Hmm… Well… it didn’t really affect my studying that much. It just affected in a way
of writing notes ‘coz, if it's not the pandemic and it’s not online classes, I would usually
write my notes at the notebook but because of it all being about technology, I just
decided to write my notes in MS Word or digitally instead of writing it hands-on… and
instead of writing- writing down or summarizing or memorizing or writing them down,
I just use the computer to do everything.
39
4. Uh, I think anything can be a good study environment as long as it's physically away
from where you spend your entertainment. For example if you’re in the living room
and you’re used to watching television there, you're gonna have a really hard time
trying to study there because your brain has made this association that, “Oh I’m in the
living room, I need to watch television”. So, really it can be anywhere as long as you’re
comfortable and your brain has made the association that it's only for studying and
nothing else.
5. Uh, the pandemic really hit my study habits hard because I’m not used to staying at
home [for a] whole day and have to study. So, it's really been hard to adapt but I can
manage. And it’s- I think it's the same for other people actually, that- because you’re
at home and you don't get any human interaction, you go [into] social media and spend
most of your time there. Sometimes not even knowing that you haven’t studied.
40
you might have a deadline of sorts and you might miss it based on you hanging out
with friends due to overtiming. And it happened to me one time and it's a good lesson
that I would experience. So... that's it for me
4. For me a good study environment is somewhere private, quiet, and you’re not uhh
barely connecting with anybody else. And things like that are probably turning off
notifications from devices or just going on mute on everything and focus for a little bit
on an hour and then take a break for 10 to 20 minutes and then resume back on your
study session and something like that.
5. The prime reason I would say is probably the environment that I’m engaged to since I
have more freedom of will to do whatever I want than I would have in class. Since in
class you have the environment where you want to study the atmosphere is there where
the learning- where the atmosphere ‘that you want to learn’ is there and it has more
discipline than the- than today when you’re at house as you have more freedom of will
to do everything that you want. And which could distract you a lot of things especially
we probably have less uh less… control by the teachers when disciplining us because
there may be factors that they can't cross and might cause complications when a student
reports such thing. So... that would be all for my environment and its disciplining.

• Respondent 15 (Grade 12)
1. Ahh sure, so for me the definition of study habits is the things that student does for their
learning or should I say their strategies when it comes to their learning. In terms of my
study habits, I tend to set a goal or specific set of goals for my subjects. Like an example
is I want to achieve this specific grade for my subject then I also tend to uhm go back
to the recordings of my specific subject so I could understand thoroughly the topics that
were discussed. And of course, set a specific goal, I also tend to set a specific schedule
for the day so that I could work productively in the task that were given in some subjects
2. (It is) Important because if a student doesn’t have their own approach to their learning
they wouldn’t function properly or become productive which could also lead to them
to cramming their given task and would have a negative impact to their studies.
3. Uh the thing that distracts me the most is the slow internet connection that I think
everybody experiences or the the environment to be specific that is sometimes noisy
which quite irritates me since it hinders me to concentrate or finish a task especially
when it is part of the schedule that I have so there is what it messes up the schedule that
I have so yah.
4. Hmm a good environment for me to study is when there is no distractions or technical
difficulties that I would experience any moment.
5. It had a negative impact to be honest, uhmm it was to the point where I become lazy to
finish the task and which had a bad influence to my performance in school. However
due to that exposure I tend uh no I had a goal that is on my mind for a while now and
that is to have a specific grade for all my subjects but of course the laziness is still there.
Thank you.
