Figurative Languages – Simile and Metaphor

Writers employ figurative language with words and phrases that have a different literal meaning than the
idea they are trying to convey. When students interpret figurative language in literature, they develop critical
thinking skills, gain deeper comprehension and become more creative writers.
Figurative language refers to the use of words in a way that deviates from the conventional order and
meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or evocative comparison.
Simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind,
commonly it is used in comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as.
Metaphor is often poetically saying something is something else. An analogy is saying something is like
something else to make some sort of an explanatory point. You can use metaphors and similes when creating
an analogy.

Examples:
Simile: Metaphor:
1. You were as brave as a lion. 1. Her long hair was a flowing golden river.
2. They fought like cats and dogs. 2. Tom's eyes were ice as he stared at her.
