Design of Regulated Power Supply

This document summarizes the key components and design considerations for regulated power supplies. It discusses the differences between linear and switched-mode power supplies, and describes the main components - transformer, rectifier, filter capacitor and voltage regulator. Linear supplies are simpler but less efficient and bulkier, while switched-mode supplies are more complicated but more efficient. Key components include the transformer, which steps voltages up or down; rectifiers, which convert AC to DC; filters to smooth the output; and voltage regulators, which maintain a constant output voltage. Fixed voltage regulators like the LM78xx and adjustable ones like the LM317 are described.

REGULATED POWER SUPPLY

DESIGNING
Why do you need
a power supply ??

Which Is Better
AC or DC ??
 A Power Supply is a device that supplies
electric power to an electrical load.

 Power supplies for electronic devices can be

broadly divided into :-
1.Linear Power Supply
2.Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS)
Linear power supply –
a) A simple design
b) Becomes increasingly bulky and heavy for
high-current equipment
c) Requires large mains-frequency transformer
d) Works by dropping a DC voltage across itself
to regulate the output.
e) Suitable for a variable voltage output.
Switched-mode Supply –
a) More complicated and difficult to design
b) More efficient ( Up to 85%)
c) Uses high-frequency transformer
d) The oscillator switches on and off a
transistor, driving the coil.
e) SMPS's don't do variable voltage very well.
TRANSFORMER RECTIFIER FILTER REGULATOR

LOAD
TRANSFORMER
 A Transformer is a static electrical device that
transfers energy by Inductive Coupling
between its winding circuits.

 The principle behind the operation of a

transformer is the Electromagnetic Induction.

 Taking the ratio of the two equations for Vs

and Vp gives the basic equation for stepping up
or stepping down the voltage -
RECTIFIER
 A Rectifier converts Alternating Current (AC), to
Pulsating Direct Current (DC). The process is
known as Rectification.

1) Half Wave Rectifier

2) Full Wave Rectifier

3) Full Wave Bridge Rectifier

1) Half-wave rectification:-

2) Full-wave rectification:-
FILTER CAPACITOR
VOLTAGE REGULATOR
 A voltage regulator is designed to automatically
maintain a constant voltage level.
 There are two basic types of voltage regulators,
Series and Shunt.
( Depending on the position of regulator in
power supply w.r.t. load circuit. )

 Measures of regulator quality -
 The output voltage can only be held roughly
constant.

 The regulation is specified by two measurements:

1) Load regulation is the change in output

voltage for a given change in load current.
2)Line regulation or Input regulation is the
degree to which output voltage changes with
input (supply) voltage.
FIXED POWER SUPPLY USING
LM78xx –
Features of LM78xx –
 Max. Input voltage = 35 V
 Max. Output Current up to 1A
 Output Voltages of 5 Volt
 Thermal Overload Protection
 Short Circuit Protection
