Problems that disabled Asian women

may have living how they want to

Asian People’s Disability Alliance


About this report

We are called the Asian People’s


Disability Alliance.

This report is about disabled


Asian women in the UK.

It is about problems they may have


living how they want to and making
their own choices.

When people live how they want to


it is called Independent Living.

We did some research about


disabled Asian women.

This means we spoke to different


groups of disabled Asian women
to find out more.

What the Asian women we spoke to told us

What people think about


living how they want to and
making their own choices

Some disabled Asian women may not


believe they can do many other things.

They only talk about looking after


their families and their homes.

Health and social care services

Social care is when care staff support


someone to live at home or do the
things they want to do.

It is hard for disabled Asian women


and the people who care for them.

to get the right health and social care
support.
For example, doctors and other
health and care staff:

• May not know much about


disabled Asian women and their
language and culture

• May have wrong ideas about


disabled Asian women, their families
and their lives.

Health and care staff may not listen to


disabled Asian women.

Disabled Asian women may get


the wrong support because of this.

There are other problems.


For example:

• Asian families may not understand


how health and social care works

• Health and social care may change


a lot

• There is less money to spend on


health and social care.

Families are worried they will be
treated badly if they complain.

Families may not be listened to if they


do complain.

Other organisations

There are organisations that work with


people from different backgrounds
and cultures.

They can really help disabled Asian


women know about support and how
to get it.

They can sometimes help more than


health and care staff.

What other Asian people may


think of disabled Asian women

Disabled Asian women and their


carers can be left out of their families
and communities.

People may ignore them or say


mean things to them.

Other Asian people may not know
enough about disability.

Some people may think that


disabled Asian women can’t do
as much as other people.

Or they may think it is bad to have


a disability or mental health problem.

Mental health problems are when


people may feel upset, scared
or worried a lot.

Some people may blame mothers


for having a disabled child.

People often find it hard to talk about


disability, mental health and dementia.

Dementia is an illness where people


can find it hard to remember things
or communicate.

Caring for people in the family

Most care work is done by women.

Some disabled Asian women care for


other people in their family.

Some older women care for


their child who is disabled.

Most older women have no plans


about who will care for their child when
they can’t any more.

They hope that other people in


the family will care for them.

Mothers don’t want their disabled


daughters to live somewhere else
where they get support.

But things are changing.

Some women want to ask for
social care or benefits money.

But their families may stop them.

They may think it is wrong to ask


other people for help.

Religion

Religion can help disabled Asian


women.

But disabled Asian women don’t want


to ask a religious leader for help.

They think that religious leaders:

• May not understand about disability


in the UK

• May make them pay for help


to heal from their disability.

What we think should happen next

Doctors and other health staff

Health staff should find good ways


to work with disabled Asian women
and their carers.

This includes thinking about what


the women need, the problems they
are having and what they believe in.

Health organisations need to look at


what different groups of disabled Asian
women and carers need.

They should use this information to


plan good health and care services.

Health organisations need to look


more at what Bangladeshi women
need.

For example, what support they may


need with mental health and autism.

Social care and housing

Care staff should not always think


that Asian families can care for
disabled people.

Staff should offer carers some time


to rest from their caring work.

There should be good support for


people with dementia.

There should be housing where


disabled Asian women can live and get
support.

There should be more information


for Asian people about disabled people
and social care.

Asian disabled people should be part


of this work.

Other Asian people and
religious leaders

Asian people need more information


to help them think better things
about disabled people.

Asian TV, radio, newspapers


and companies can help with this.

Religious leaders can help


disabled people and their carers
get good support.

The law says that religious places


should make things easier for
disabled people where they can.

Other organisations

Other organisations can help


disabled Asian women and their carers
get the support they need.

There could be more groups run by


carers and disabled people to support
each other.

Some Asian women might have an
illness or disability but they have not
told anyone about it.

They might get more support if they tell


their doctor or council about it.

People need to plan more so that


disabled Asian adults can live in their
community in the way they want to.

More research

More research needs to be done about


some of the things we found out.
