Vmware 1e

Vmware is a software provider that offers virtualization and cloud computing solutions. Its core products are VMware vSphere, which includes the ESXi hypervisor and vCenter Server management platform, and allows users to virtualize servers and manage virtual machines from a centralized location. Virtual machines act like independent computers that run operating systems and applications within a host computer. Common VM files include .vmx configuration files and .vmdk virtual disk files. Templates allow quick provisioning of new VMs with a preconfigured environment.

VM WARE

Vmware is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider.

Vmware Vcenter:-
VCenter Server is the centralized management utility for VMware, and is used to manage virtual
machines, multiple ESXi hosts and all dependent components from a single centralized location.
VCenter Server is the service through which you manage multiple hosts connected in a
network .
Structure of Vcenter is Vcenter--datacenter---Cluster---ESXi hosts---Vm's.
VPX logs provides access through the Vcenter.
Virtualization:-
Virtualization uses software to create an abstraction layer over computer hardware that allows
the hardware elements of a single computer processors, memory, storage and more to be
divided into multiple virtual computers, commonly called virtual machines.
Five types of Virtulization:-
1. Application virtualization,
2. Storage virtualization,
3. Network virtualization,
4. Server virtualization,
5. Presentation virtualization.
Vmware Vsphere:-
VMware vSphere is VMware's virtualization platform, which transforms data centers into
aggregated computing infrastructures.
It includes storage, network resources e.t.c.
The two core components of vSphere are ESXi and vCenter Server. ESXi is the virtualization
platform where you create and run virtual machines and virtual appliances.
Virtual Machine:-
A virtual machine (VM) is a virtual environment that works like a computer within a computer.
Virtual machines allow you to run an operating system in an app window on your desktop that
behaves like a full, separate computer.
In this we run the application with a set of descripted files.
In the VM multiple OS will be installed .
It is used to reduce manpower & cost.
VM Files:-
.VMX file:- Configuration files
.VMDK file:- It stores all the contains of harddisk.
Flat VMDK file:- It stores the actual data.
NVRAM file:- It is used to store BIOS file.
.V SWAP file:- In this swap files when we power on it created file , when we power off the file
goes.
Cloning:-
In virtual machine cloning is a copy of an existing virtual machine. The existing virtual machine is
called the parent of the clone.VM clones are used for testin purposes.
we cannot convert cloning virtual machine into parent virtual machine.
Template:-
It is a master copy of VM used to create and provisioning the new VM' s.
By using template we can create number of VM ' s within seconds.
Datacenter:- it is a primary container
V motion Technology :- It is a live migration. It is to move VM' s from one host to another host
ESXI Host:- Where Vm's are the resides
Software using in VMware is ESXI.
Remote acess:-
the vmware can be accesed remotely by using below methods.
Putty , Powershell , Vsphere , IP Adress.
Hypervisor:- It is a software that manages all the VM's. It is of two types
1. Bare metal Hypervisor:- It is a virtual A Type 1 hypervisor .It is installed on new brand
machine.
2. Host Hypervisor:- It is a virtual A Type 2 hypervisor, also called a hosted hypervisor, is a virtual
machine (VM) manager that is installed as a software application on an existing OS.
VM Ware tools:-
It contains the power control settings of the Vm's and drivers like SESC e.t.c
Types of storages:-
1. Fibre channel:- It is a data transfer through the cable, Its cost is high bugt data transfer is
more.It has a unique hexadecimal number like WorldWide number. HBA is used in fibre channel.
In this Virtual machine file system is used.
2. ISCSI :-In this VMFS is used. its cost is low compared to Fibre channel. In this data transfers
through magnetic and electric signals. It has a IQS number.
3. NAS:- It has a less performance and less cost compared to others.
VMFS 3 , VMFS 5 , VMFS 6 are the different type of versions.
Types of path selection:-
1. Fixed one:- If there are two paths , in that one path is working and other path is sleeping, if
the working path fails the other path automatically comes to active.
2. MRU(most recently used):- In this if working path fails, the other path comes to activity. after
failed path is fixed also but the flow continuous in other path only.
3. Round Robin:- in this if one path fails the other path will load . After solving the issue there is
a flow in both the paths.
Port groups:-
1. Vm kernel Port group:- ESXi uses for the storage access, NFS e.t.c
2. Virtualmachine port group:- It is used to connect ESXi with VM.
3. Service console port group:- It manages the ESXi in VM
NIC card:-
It is a Network Interface Card. It has a permanent MAC address.
Network Security Policies:-
1. Promiscuous mode:- It should be in reject mode to maintain the security while transmitting
the information.
2. MAC address change:- It should be in Accept mode. It allows outgoing the data and controls
incoming traffic.
3. Forged transmits:- It should be in accept mode. It allows outgoing traffic.
Important port numbers:-
Vcenter port group ---- 902
V motion ----- 8000
SSH ----- 22
ISCSI ----- 3260
DNS ----- 53
DHCP ------ 67
NTP ------ 123
DHCP client ------- 68
HTTP ------ 80
