Sondex Limited: Spinner Speed Calculations For Production Logging Operations

This document provides instructions and calculations for determining the appropriate spinner speed for production logging tools based on downhole fluid velocity. Input parameters like fluid properties, pressures, and flowrates are entered to calculate the apparent fluid velocity and recommended revolutions per second (RPS) for different types of spinners. Maximum recommended speeds are provided to ensure tools can operate safely downhole. The document is intended to help users select the proper spinner tool to use based on calculated fluid velocities and notes that high flowrates may require a tool lift estimation.

Max recommended speed for solid shaft CFB 60 RPS
Max recommended speed for CFS / 2 Blade Spinners 100 RPS
Max recommended speed for ILS/Standard CFJ/DBT 120 RPS

INSTRUCTIONS:
This spreadsheet is to help decide what type of spinner tool is required based on fluid velocity.

Enter Fluid Properties including formation volume factors and solution GOR.
Enter Surface and Downhole Pressures
Enter Surface Flowrates
Enter Tubing and Casing ID's
For maximum spinner speed that will be seen add in maximum line speed.
After 2002 the Short Compact Tools use 2 blade spinners.
Notes:
If flowrates are high, make a tool lift estimation to see if the tools are in danger of being lifted or will not travel down the well.
This spreadsheet is only a simple estimation. If you do not know Formation Volume Factor Bo use 1.2.
