Remedial-Lesson Plan-Grade 9

The lesson plan is for a 9th grade remedial mathematics class on solving quadratic equations by factoring. Students will complete online exercises and Kahoot quizzes to practice factoring polynomials and solving quadratic equations. They are expected to complete the tasks with 80% accuracy within given time limits. The lesson will review factoring polynomials and applying the zero product property before students work on additional practice problems.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Grade 9
REMEDIAL
I. OBJECTIVES:
After working on with series of on-line exercises, the Grade 9 students are expected to do
following with at least 80% level of accuracy within 30 minutes:

a. Find the factors of the polynomials;

b. Solve quadratic equations by factoring;
c. Justify an argument involving quadratic equations by factoring.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic: Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
Materials: Laptop/PC/Smart Phone; Powerpoint Presentations; On-line Softwares (Google
Form;Kahoot; Google Classroom)
Resources: 21st Century Mathematics pp. 122-127, Mathematics Learner’s Material 9.pp27

III. Procedure:
A. Recall
Greetings!
Yesterday/The other day, we were able to discuss and solve different activities
involving quadratic equations by factoring and how to solve quadratic problems in real life
situations, right? Hence, I would like to find out how well you’ve understood our lesson by
answering the on-line exercises I have prepared for you via Google form. Type-in your name,
year and section. You have two (2) minutes to answer each item. Make sure to type your
complete name. Your speed in answering the questions will also be a plus factor aside from
answering it correctly. Ready? Let’s begin!

Factor each of the following polynomials. Click on the correct answer.

Question 1: 𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝟖𝒙
(Answer: 𝟐𝒙(𝒙 − 𝟒) )
Question 2: −𝟑𝒔 + 𝟗s
𝟐

(Answer:−𝟑𝒔(𝒔 − 𝟑))
Question 3: 4x+𝟐𝟎𝒙𝟐
(Answer: 𝟒𝒙 (𝟏 + 𝟓𝒙) )
Question 4: 𝟓𝒕 − 𝟏𝟎𝒕𝟐

(Answer: 𝟓𝒕 (𝟏 + 𝟐𝒕) )
Question 5: 𝒙 − 𝟏𝟎𝒙 + 𝟐𝟏
𝟐

(Answer: (𝒙 − 𝟕)(𝒙 − 𝟑) )
Time’s up! Great job! Congratulations for you were able to successfully answer all the
questions. Who among you got the highest? least?
B. Recall of the Rule/ Generalization
Based from the answered exercises, how did you find the activity? Were you able to
recall and apply the different mathematics concepts or principles in factoring polynomials?
Great job! Very well said!
(Teacher will present the concept through a PowerPoint presentation after the
students have shared their answers to the following raised questions.)

(Applying Zero Product Property)

If the product of two real numbers is zero, then either of the two is equal to zero or
both numbers are equal to zero.

Example 1: Find the solutions of 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8 by factoring.

a. Transform the equation into standard form 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0.

𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8 → 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 + 8 = 0
b. Factor the quadratic expression 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 + 8.
x 2 + 9x + 8 = 0 → (x + 1)(x + 8) = 0
c. Apply the zero-product property by setting each factor of the quadratic
expression equal to 0.
(x + 1)(x + 8) = 0 → x + 1 = 0; x + 8 = 0
d. Solve each resulting equation.
x+1 = 0 → x+1−1 = 0−1
x = −1

x+8 = 0 → x+8−8 = 0−8

x = −8
e. Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the
equation𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8 .

For 𝑥 = −1 For 𝑥 = −8
𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8
(−1)2 + 9(−1) = −8 2
(−8) + 9(−8) = −8
1 − 9 = −8 64 − 72 = −8
−8 = −8 −8 = −8

Both values of x satisfy the given equations. So, the equations 𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 = −8 is true
when 𝑥 = −1 or when 𝑥 = −8.

Answer: The equations x 2 + 9x = −8 has two solutions: 𝐱 = −𝟏 or 𝐱 = −𝟖.

C. Inference
Let’s see if you have clearly understood our lesson by working on the next exercises
that I have prepared for you. This time, you will answer the exercises via KAHOOT. You are
only given fifteen (15) minutes to answer this. Type-in “Kahoot.com” and then key-in the quiz
code “________” (NOTE: Code is projected on the monitor and/or shared in the Chat Box). You
have 5 minutes to answer each item. Make sure to type your complete name. Ready? Let’s
begin!

Directions: Solve the following quadratic equations by factoring. Click on the answer.

Question 1: 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏𝟒 = 𝟓𝒙
(Answer: 𝒙 = 𝟕 𝒐𝒓 𝒙 = −𝟐)
Question 2: 𝟔𝒔𝟐 + 𝟖s=0
(Answer: 𝒔 = 𝟎 𝒐𝒓 𝒙 = −𝟑)
Question 3: 𝒉 + 𝟔𝒉 = 𝟏𝟔
𝟐

(Answer: 𝒉 = −𝟖 𝒐𝒓 𝒉 = 𝟐)

Time’s up! Congratulations for you were able to successfully answer all the questions.
Who among you topped the Leader board? What’s your rank? Virtual clap/applause for
everyone.

D. Verification
Class, let’s try to find out why you were or weren’t able to solve the quadratic equation
by factoring correctly? Was it easy for you to find the solutions? Did you apply the different
mathematics concepts and principles in finding the solutions of each equation? I know you
did! Excellent!

IV. Evaluation:
Now, for me to guarantee that you already have further understand about solving
quadratic equations by factoring, using a sheet of paper, justify your answer by explaining
and solving the situation below. Save and upload your created outputs in our LMS class portal.
Complete this task within five (5) minutes.

‘’Do you agree that 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒 = 𝟎 and 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟓𝒙 − 𝒙𝟐 = 𝟎 have the same

solutions? Justify your answer.

Answer: (Yes, 𝟏𝟒 − 𝟓𝒙 − 𝒙𝟐 = 𝟎 can also be written as that 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒 = 𝟎 ).
