E-VOTING SYSTEM MANAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION:
Electronic voting in polling stations is in place in some of the world's largest democracies, and
Internet voting is used in some, initially mainly small and historically conflict-free, countries.
Many countries are currently considering introducing e-voting systems with the aim of
improving various aspects of the electoral process. E-voting is often seen as a tool for advancing
democracy, building trust in electoral management, adding credibility to election results and
increasing the overall efficiency of the electoral process. The technology is evolving fast and
election managers, observers, international organizations, vendors, and standardization bodies
are continuously updating their methodologies and approaches.
Properly implemented, e-voting solutions can eliminate certain common avenues of fraud. speed
up the processing of results, increase accessibility and make voting more convenient for citizens-
-in some cases, when used over a series of clitoral events, possibly even reducing the cost of
elections or referendums in the long term.
Technical requirements:
1. The system should have four subsystems as listed below:
i. An electronic device with fingerprint and smart card reader, and a camera for authentication
and software for vote casting and internet access for vote sending.
ii. A software platform for administrative management purpose.
iii. A software platform for result display.
iv. A files saving application for storage of election data.
2. The system administrative dashboard for administrators should have access control.
3. The system electronic device should have a local data for verification purpose.
4. The system electronic device should have a built-in battery storage capability.
5. The votes should be transmitted over a secured wireless protocol.
End user of the project:
To the University;
An e-voting system is beneficial to the university as:
1. It will provide a means conduct a less stressful and fair elections at various levels.
(faculty, departments, school wide etc.) in the university.
2. It will offer an in-depth knowledge of the practical approach to education.
3. It will serve as a hands-on application of theories taught in class as it relates to data stored in
files, software, and hardware development.
4. As its’ data is based on a flexible data storage management system, student and staff details
can easily be collected for easy access and monitoring.
5. Its’ smart card system can also be applied to other fields (e.g., networking) for easy access of
each individuals’ data.
6. It will serve as a base for other works in the field of governance.
To the Society;
The significance of an e-voting system to the society are itemized as follows:
1. It will provide to Election committees with a means to conduct less costly and fair elections.
2. The secure and flexible database management system safeguards data and information to
account for credible elections.
3. It will serve to reduce the workload in the process of conducting election.
4. As it incorporates remote voting individuals can vote from their convenience.
5. It will reduce the time wasted in collating and announcing election result.
6. It will greatly reduce and eliminate disenfranchising electorates.
7. It will serve to eliminate invalid votes, curb election violence as votes are counted
immediately as they are cast.
