The advantages of social media are that you can chat

with your friends and share pictures whenever you
want. It really helps me to stay in touch with some of
my friends who live in other countries—phone them
would be so expensive.
It also passes the time when you’re traveling or
commuting. I often browse Facebook on the bus and
read articles that my friends have shared.
The disadvantages are that anyone can get hold of
very personal information about you and you don’t
know what they might use it for. Also, I think social
media can cause jealousy in relationships. So many of
my friends try to hack into their boyfriend’s Facebook
messages and Twitter accounts to check that they
haven’t been talking to other girls!

A person I really admire is my grandmother. She

may not be famous but I think that she is an amazing
person!
She comes from a very poor background. Her parents
were farmers, who worked very hard, but often
droughts and poor crops meant that there wasn’t
enough food. My grandmother and her six younger
brothers and sisters would often go to bed hungry.
Despite this background my grandmother taught
herself to read and write and became a nurse. She
met my grandfather during the Second World War. He
had been shot and she looked after him. She is a very
kind and caring woman.

Dear Natasha,
Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality.
It was so kind of you to invite us to stay for the
weekend.
We had such a fantastic time. We really appreciated
you showing us around the old town and taking us for
dinner. I really needed a vacation—now I’m back at
work feeling refreshed and relaxed.
You must come to stay with us some time and we’ll
return the favor.
Many thanks again and hopefully we’ll see you soon!

In my country, the Czech Republic, we have a

tradition that all of my foreign friends find very
strange! At Easter time, men can buy sticks with
ribbons tied around them from stalls on the street.
They use these sticks to hit women with—not hard
though! In the past they thought this helped women
to stay beautiful and young looking. Of course, we
don’t believe that now—it is just a silly tradition that
makes everyone laugh!

I stayed at the Leonardo Hotel in Florence for four

days last March. The hotel is in a side street not far
from the cathedral. The outside of it looks very old
but inside it is very modern and surprisingly spacious.
Our room was white with a big en-suite bathroom and
a large comfortable bed. There was also free Wi-Fi
and a flat screen TV. The staff were very helpful and
recommended some really nice restaurants. The food
at the hotel was very good too—breakfast was free
and served in the dining room but you could also
order room service in the evening. It was a wonderful
place to stay!

At the moment, many refugees from North African

counties are trying to reach Europe through my
country, Italy. These poor people are being exploited
by traffickers who charge them a lot of money to
buy a ticket for their very unsafe boats. Often these
boats sink and the refugees either drown in the
Mediterranean Sea or have to be rescued by Italian
patrol boats. When or if they reach Italy, these people
are put into refugee camps. I feel so sorry for these
people who have to risk their lives to get away from
dangerous situations in their own countries. I think that
the EU has to do more to help solve this problem.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to draw your attention to a potential
safety issue in Stanfield. The town has a small road
running through it, which previously was a very quiet
road. Since the shopping center was built about five
miles away, the traffic has increased significantly.
Many seniors and young children live in the village
and two accidents have occurred in the past couple
of months.
I am aware that a new road is being built that will
bypass the town but this won’t be complete for at
least another year. To prevent further accidents we
request the following action:
• a speed limit of 30 mph should be set and a
“Please drive slowly” sign put up.
• speed cameras should be put in place.
• a pedestrian crossing by the school should be
set up.
I have great confidence in your ability to deal with this
issue, and I would appreciate your prompt action to
reduce the risks to the general public.
Yours faithfully,
Tomas

Last year I went to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time.
It is a large city in the south of Vietnam. It is a crowded
city where people are constantly on the go—usually
on scooters – and many backpackers stay here to book
excursions to the Mekong River.
It is a very interesting city. There are lots of historical
sites such as the Independence Palace and cultural
museums. However, it is also a very modern city with
skyscrapers, where you can go for a cocktail, and
shopping centers full of brand-name stores.
The food in Ho Chi Minh is amazing! There are lots
of street food stalls and restaurants selling traditional
Vietnamese food—which is delicious—and also many
western restaurants, especially French.
It’s a great city to explore as each district is quite
different and there are lots of small tree lined streets
and alleyways. I would definitely recommend Ho
Chi Minh to everyone who likes fast-paced, fun but
chaotic cities.
