Potentiometric titrations
Redox titration
Ce 4+ + Fe 2+ → Ce 3+ + Fe 3+
The potential of indicator electrode is
Fe 3+ / Fe 2+system- E0 =.77V
Ce 4+/Ce 3+ system - E0 = 1.60V
Advantages of potentiometric titrations
▪ Can be used in the case of colored solutions
▪ Apparatus required is simple , reliable and readily available
▪ Solutions containing mixture of solutes can be accurately analyzed
▪ It can be used in precipitation titration
Lithium ion cell
• Rechargeable battery
• Li ion moves between anode and cathode during charging and discharging
• Li- highest negative value for reduction potential, lower mass
❑ positive electrode-LiCoO2
❑ Negative electrode- Graphite
❑ Li salt solution in organic solvent- electrolyte
❑ SEI- Solid electrolyte separator
Charging- During charging the cell act as an electrolytic cell
Anode(+)
LiCoO2 → Li 1-x CoO2 + xLi+ + xe
Cathode (-)
CG + x Li + +xe → Li x C G
Discharging - During discharging the cell act as an electrochemical cell
3.7V
Anode(-)
Li x C G → CG + x Li + +xe
Cathode (-)
Li 1-x CoO2 + xLi+ + xe → LiCoO2
Advantages
• Light weight
• High open circuit voltage
• Available in different sizes and shapes
Conductivity
Conductors – allows the passage of electric current through them
Insulators – not allows the passage of electric current through them
Conductors
Electronic Electrolytic
conductors conductors
Electrical resistance (R) Electrical conductance (C)
Electrical resistance measures the It is the measure of the ease with which
obstruction to the flow of current the current flows through a conductor
Specific conductance or conductivity (K) Cell constant
It is the reciprocal of specific resistance
Determination of conductance
• One arm of the Whestone bridge is connected to
conductivity cell containing the test solution
• A known resistance R is taken out from the resistance
box
• Ac source is connected between A and B (ac current
prevent electrolysis)
• Null point detector is a head phone
• The bridge can be balanced by moving the sliding
jockey
• At the null point the sound intensity becomes zero
From Whestone bridge principle at the null point
Applications
• Used for measuring salinity of water
• End point of acid base titration can be
done by conductivity measurment
