Chapter 6

Program Requirements

Evoking curiosity is implemented through the function of the building as well

as in the design of the building. Therefore, choosing the design requirement is based

on four categorize that are: mental aspect that focuses on being happy, physical

aspect that focuses on being healthy, social aspect that focuses on being open to

change, and cognitive aspect that focuses on being knowledgeable. It is not

necessary being divided; however, the functions must be comprehensive that covers

all the aspects. As a person could be happy while learning a new habit that might

contributes to the personal change of the individual. Therefore, the functions are not

strictly separated, rather, they all are cooperating to foster all the four aspects and

collectively evoke curiosity. In addition, the building has other administrative

functions and operating spaces.

The major functions provided:

 Theater (300 seats) = 300 m2

 4 galleries (Permanent and interactive) 200*4= 800 m 2

 2 galleries (Temporary) 200*2= 400 m2

 Library (Including multimedia hall) = 1300 m 2

 Sports court =4250 m2

 Restaurant (For 100 people) =600 m2

 6 Workshops (For 50 people) 150*6= 900 m2

 2 Laps (For 25 people) 150*2=300 m2

 3 Common rooms (For 25 people) 70*3= 210 m2

These functions are the major areas in the building; however, it is possible to

add few other functions as required, or specify some of the areas. As the targeted

users of the project are young people, the major functions focus mainly on the

targeted users. However, there are other functions that targets users from all ages,

including children and elderly people. The functions would be the same, however,

with a more concentrated design for the targeted users. As the project will

incorporate an area for the children where the design of the space focuses mainly on

children. This area will incorporate:

 2 galleries 200*2= 400 m2

 Library (Including multimedia hall) 600 m2

 2 Workshops (For 50 people) 150*2= 300 m2

 2 Laps (For 25 people) 150*2=300 m2

 Theater (300 seats) 300 m2

The project will also include some quite areas for the elderly users who visits

the project. The function of these areas are manly areas that area quiet and relaxing.

The areas encourage the users to communicate with other while also providing the

opportunity to explore new things and activities. The functions provided for the

elderly users are:

 3 Common rooms (For 25 people) 70*3= 210 m2

 1 gallery (Permanent) = 200 m2

 1 gallery (Temporary) = 200 m2

 Library (Including multimedia hall) 600 m2

Special Building Requirements

It is important to link any project to its context and any near projects. As the

site of this project is located right across the street from a major development in the

city which is a project that works on developing the water front area. The

development project is an urban public space that focuses on developing the whole

waterfront area. It is currently under construction; therefore, it is an important aspect

to consider in the design of the project. The connection to this development could be

through an open area that connects the project and the development physically

through the open area. Moreover, the connection could be visually by providing

visual connectivity between the project and the development. As some of the

function in the project are located outdoors, it is possible to establish both

connectivity methods in the project. First by connecting the outdoor activities to the

development physically through providing pedestrian crosswalk. Second by

connecting the indoor functions in the project visually to the new development by

providing large windows and multiple terraces. Furthermore, it is possible to connect

the project to the new development through the landscape of the area. Connecting

the project to the new development through the landscape design could be possible

through placing some activities outdoor and maintaining a similar landscape scheme.

As the aim is to connect the project to the new development near it while maintain a

separate identity and character.
