SECTION - 1 : METHODOLOGY FOR DESIGN OF SUB - STATION STRUCTURE

1.00 STRUCTURE ARRANGEMENT

In pursuant to Cl. No. 11.2 of Sec. 11 of Vol.2 of 3 of Tech. Specification under Contract, All Structures are proposed
as Lattice Structures primarily composed of Angle / Channel Sections, with use of Bolted Gusset Plates for
Connections with each other and with Foundation Bolts & Welded Base Plate for Connection with Foundations at
Bottom.

DESIGN OF BEAMS & TOWER STRUCTURES

2.00 DESIGN - IN GENERAL
Load Calculation with various Load Combination shall primarily be made by use of STAAD Models. Loads shall be
calculated Manually ( in excel ) and such Loads shall be applied in the Model of the Structure developed in STAAD for
obtaining Max. Force in each Member. There after, each Member shall be checked for adequate Capacity, based on
their Length, Sizes, Slenderness Ratio, allowable Yield Stress & Partial Matrial Factors on Yield Stress. Calculated
Capacity shall be More than the Actual Load ( Calculated Load X Partial Safety Factor ). Various Steps of Designs are
as under :-

2.01 Load Calculation

a) Manual Calculation of Dead Load of Insulator ( on standard Presumption incl. addition of 20% for Hardware ) &
Conductor ( from Standard Manufacturer's Table / Data Sheet ).
b) Consideration of Dead Load of Structure by STAAD from Input given for the Presumed Member Sections in the Model
( Which may be on slightly Higher Side and adding 15% excess Weight to Cover for Gussets & Fastners ).

c) Manual Calculation ( in excel ) of Wind Load on Insulator ( with presumed Standard Dia & Length & Consideration of
10% excess for Hard Wares ), Conductors ( Considering Dia from Standard Manufacturer's Table / Data Sheet and
Length from Layout ) and Structures.
d) Consideration of Max. Tension in Strung Conductors and Earth Wires in Normal Condition / Short Circuit Condition.

2.02 STAAD, Models, Inputs, Max. Member Forces & Reactions

a) Generation of Models of Beams in STAAD & providing inputs for all the above Loads as per Various Load
Combinations with Partial Safety Factors, taking Outputs for Max. Force on each Member.
b) Manual ( excel ) Calculation of all Reactions at end of Beam / on Tower from Various Loads and their Combination.

c) Generation of Models of Towers in STAAD & providing inputs for Dead / Wind Load from for E / Wire, Wind Loads
from Structure AND Reactions from Beams, Various Load Combinations with Partial Safety Factors. Outputs for Max.
Force on each Member shall be taken. Un-factored Load Combination shall also be provided for taking output of
Support / Foundation Reaction for Foundation Designs.

2.03 Member & Bolt Capacity & Design

a) Manual ( in excel ) Calculation of Max. Compressive Capacity of each Member ( as per their Length, Sectional
Properties and Slenderness Ratio, Yield Stress after making due consideration of Partial Material Factors ), Capacity
in Tension ( as per Yield Stress in Tension and Multiplied by Partial Material Factor ). Max. Forces on each Member
as per Output obtained in Line with 2.10 ( h ) above shall be Less than the allowable Stress as Calculated.

2 OF 19
SECTION - 1 : METHODOLOGY FOR DESIGN OF SUB - STATION STRUCTURE
b) Manual ( in excel ) Calculation of Max. Shear & Bearing Capacity of Connecting Bolts ( as per their Dia, Type of
Connection in Single or Duble Shear and thickness of Bearing ) after making due consideration of Partial Material
Factors ). Max. Forces on each Bolts under Shear / Bearing ( ie. Max. Compression / Tension Divided by No. of Bolts
) shall be Less than the Calculated Allowable Value.

2.04 Design of Foundation Bolts & Base Plate

a) Max. Design Shear Force on each Foundation Bolts shall be : [ Total Shear ( Fx / Fz / Algebric Summation of both )
on each Leg Member ( from Support Reactions of STAAD in Un - factored Load Combination ) Multiplied by
Appropriate Load Factor for the Particular Load Case AND divided by No. of Bolts ]. Accordingly, Tension on each
Bolt shall be Total Tension in each Main Leg ( FY ) Multiplied by appropriate Load Factor AND divided by No. of Bolts
in Leg.

b) Allowable Capacity of Bolts in Shear Shall be Allowable Shear Stress ( Yield ) of Bolts of approprite Grade Multiplied
by appropriate Partial Safety Factor of Material Multiplied with Gross Area of Bolt. This shall be More than Actual
Design Shear Calculated above.
c) Allowable Capacity of Bolts in Tension Shall be Allowable Tensile Stress ( Yield ) of Bolts of approprite Grade
Multiplied by appropriate Partial Safety Factor of Material Multiplied with Nett Area of Bolt at Thread / Root. This shall
be More than Actual Design Tension Calculated above.
d) Further, a Check for the adequacy of the Bolt against the action of Combined Tension & Shear shall also be made. In
such Case, [ ( Actual Design Tension / Allowable Tension ) + ( Actual Design Shear / Allowable Shear ) ] < 1.40.

Fa = [ 1 - 0.50 x {( K X L / r ) / Cc}2 ] X FY, When K X L / r < OR = Cc

AND
2 2
Fa = (  X E ) / ( K X L / r ) , When K X L / r > OR = Cc
Where
0.5
CC = P X ( 2 X E / FY )
FY = Yield Stress of Mild Steel, 2550 Kg / Sq.CM.
K X L / r = Largest effective Slenderness Ratio of any Un - braced segment of Member
L = Un - braced Length of Compression Member, in CM.
r = Appropriate Radius of Gyration in CM.

6.22 The Formulae given in 6.21 above is applicable provided the Largest Width / Thickness ( B / T ) is not more than the

7.50 Check for Safety of RC Column against Bending Compressive Stress

a) Max. Un - factored Compressive Load in One Main Leg, as per Support Reaction = C
Since, this Check will be performed with Working Stress, Partial Factor of Safety will not be applicable.
b) Area of Base Plate = AB = Length X Width of Base Plate
c) Permissible Stress, Bending Compression, of M-20 Conc. ( Working ) : 70.00 Kg / SqCM
d) Allowable increase for Consideration of Wind Load : 33.33 %
f) Bending Compressive Capacity of Concrete below Base Plate = AB X 70 X 1.333 > C

7.60 Adequacy of Base Plate in Tension

a) Each Foundation Bolt on Base Plate is surrounded by a Box Like, Square / Rectangular Area, Where, the Boundary
Limit is with either Face of Main Leg / Stiffner Plates OR a Free edge of Base Plate. Max. Distance from Centre of
Fdn. Bolt to this edge is the Cantilever Distance for Calculating Max. Moment on Base Plate Due to Tension in Bolt (
MB ) = Tension in Bolt ( T in 7.40 f above ) X Cantilever Distance

Section Modulus of this Box Portion ( ZB ) = Effective Width of this Box, WB ( With the Max. Cantilever ) X Thickness
of Base Plate

So, Max. Bending Stress Due Tension, TBST = ( MB ) / ( ZB )

So, Max. Bending Stress Due Tension, in Load Comb.-1 = TBST-1
So, Max. Bending Stress Due Tension, in Load Comb.-2 = TBST-2
So, Max. Bending Stress Due Tension, in Load Comb.-3 = TBST-3

b) Partial factor of Safety, @ Spec., for Load Combination - 1 ( FOS1 ) : 1.35

Partial factor of Safety, @ Spec., for Load Combination - 2 ( FOS2 ) : 1.00
Partial factor of Safety, @ Spec., for Load Combination - 3 ( FOS3 ) : 1.50

c) Permissible Yield Tensile Stress of Base Plate : 2550.00 Kg / SqCM

d) Partial Material factor, as per Specification : 0.85

e) for Load Comb.-1, ( TBST-1 ) X 1.35 < 2550 X 0.85

for Load Comb.-2, ( TBST-2 ) X 1.00 < 2550 X 0.85
for Load Comb.-3, ( TBST-3 ) X 1.50 < 2550 X 0.85
