Description of a Cricket Match
It was twenty sixth of January, the Republic Day Of India.
This day will always be written in golden letters in India
cricket history as it was the day of the finals of the Under-19
cricket world cup 2019. I was the vice-captain of this team for
whole tournament but a cramp in my right hand did not
allow me to play this blistering final game against one of
India’s most formidable opponent, Pakistan.
The roar of the patriotic Indian spectators could
be heard even before the game started. There were a good
number of Pakistani supporters as well because we were
playing in the Melbourne Stadium of Australia. It was a
half past two in the Australian Standard Time and it was
time for the toss now. Our coach, Mr. Rahul Dravid, our
captain and me had a chat just before the toss and we
decided to bat first if the coin falls in our favour. I know I
was not playing the game but I wanted to be part of the
game as much as I could.
Unfortunately, we lost the toss and Pakistan
elected to bat first. The game was about to start and the roar
of the fans was increasing with every passing minute. The
clock stroke three o’ clock and the game started. The captain
had given our fastest bowler to bowl the first over. From the
first ball he was bowling with a blistering pace of one-fifty
kilometers per hour. The first four overs were quite
economical. But the fifth and sixth over was quite expensive.
At the end of ten overs the run was forty-five for no wickets
down. The run was quite decent and we could understand
that we have to somehow break this partnership. As the
battle of the players were going on, the battle of the Indian
and Pakistani spectators was quite prominent. But at this
stage we could sense that the sound of the Indian spectators
was quite a bit less than the Pakistanis.
The match was quite hectic for the Indian players
as the Pakistanis had reached one hundred and eighty runs in
thirty overs with the loss of no wicket. We could now fell the
pressure of the Pakistanis. The stadium was full of the roar
of the Pakistani supporters. We were in an urgent need of a
wicket. And just in the thirty first over we broke the
partnership. But unfortunately we could not get any more
wicket and the run was three hundred and twenty-one at the
end of fifty overs.
We were really tensed as we knew it was a huge
target. We had a chat with our players and the coach told
our openers to go out and attack the Pakistani bowlers
straight away and utilize the first powerplay. Our innings
started we could fell the expectations of the Indian
supporters. But nothing was going on according to our plan
we lost our first wicket in just the second over. Then our
batsmen played a bit cautiously and we were just forty-one
for one wicket at the end of the tenth over. We tried to
accelerate a bit but we lost another wicket in the sixteenth
over. The twenty first and twenty third overs were quite good
for us but we again lost a wicket in the twenty-ninth over and
our score was only one hundred and fifty in thirty overs. But
we lost another wicket in the next over. Now our coach
decided to send a bowler in and told him to swing his bat
from the first ball. This bowler was quite a powerful lad
and could hit big sixes. And he started his show, he was
middling every ball and we were two hundred and thirty at
the end of forty overs. Now the Indian spectators were
shouting on the top of their voice as they believed we could
win the match. The show continued and we were racing ahead
and we needed just thirty runs in four overs. But the forty
sixty over was a nightmare for us, we lost two back to back
wickets . It was hard for a new batsman to come and straight
away hit the ball we scored only five runs and we needed
only twenty five of the last two overs. But now our captain
was in the pitch and he struck two sixes and we needed
thirteen of the last. It was a four in the first ball of the over
but a dot ball in the next two. Our captain took a single and
it was six needed from two but another batsman was on
strike. He missed that ball and six was needed in the last
ball. Everyone was tensed. The bowler marched towards the
batsman to bowl the last ball, the batsman swung his bat
hard and the ball was in the air my heartbeat stopped for a
minute, we thought it was a six but the bowl just dropped
before the boundary line and it was a four.
We had lost the match our heads were down but we
knew we fought hard. We were sad that we could win it for
our country in the republic day but it was a sport and we
knew that anything can happen in sports.
