Chapter 1
Communication: Types and Levels of
Communication, Processes, Principles and Ethics
TASK 1: What are examples of messages that can be communicated thru the following means of
communication?
• Marriage proposal
• State of the Nation Address/SONA
Spoken Word • Commentary (Sports commentator or
sportscaster)
• Tutorials
• Warnings (Caution signs) Visual Images
• Location (where you are right now)
• Authorization (letter of authorization)
• Sales report
Written Word • Daily experience (blogs and posts)
• Direction (Pointing)
• Approval/Yes or Disapproval/No (Nodding,
Thumbs up or thumbs down) Body Language
• Confusion (Tilting head or Shoulder shrug)

TASK 2: If you were to make your own communication model, how will it be different from the
four communication models discussed?
Make an illustration of your communication model.
CABLE CAR MODEL
MESSAGE/
RECIEVER
INFORMATION
FEEDBACK

NOISE
FEEDBACK

SENDER
The cable car model is a visual oriented model of the basic communication model. The
model is designed as a cable cart whereas the lower terminal station is considered as the sender
sending messages to the upper terminal station (receiver). The cable car vehicles are considered
as messages or information and after passing through the receive, indicating that the receiver
got and decodes the message, it goes back to the sender as a feedback. In real life, sometimes
the vehicles are fast or slow, in the model this is considered as the speed and difficulty to send
the message. The height indicates the noise and barriers in the communication. A higher height
means that there is greater noise/barrier affecting the communication making it harder and
slower for the message to be passed from the sender to the receiver.

TASK 3: There are some communication situations that require us to strategize how we
respond. Read the situation below and respond to the questions.
A. Tom, a first-year college student, is called upon by the teacher to read a poem aloud. “Do
we really have to take this up now?” says Tom. “It’s boring!” shout some other friends and
classmates. Others giggle. But one shouts, “But I like it!” The rest are silent, awaiting the
teacher’s reaction.
Now, respond to the following statements/questions.
1. Write down at least 3 different responses the teacher might do to handle the situation.
a) The teacher thanks the student who shouted “But I like it”, reprimands
Tom and the other students, and explain the importance of reading
the poem aloud.
b) The teacher would simply reply “If you don’t want to, then leave.”
and continues with the class.
c) The teacher continues the class without saying anything about what
just happened and just reads the poem by himself
2. What might be the effects of each of them?
a) The class goes on and the students continues to read the poem
aloud understating why but some of the students might harbor
negativity towards the teacher. In regard to the importance of
reading the poem aloud, students might understand it yet some
would still disregard what was said and focus more on being
reprimanded by the teacher and others would start a rebuttal on
what the teacher said.
b) The class goes on with the students reading the poem aloud. The
students then discipline themselves interpreting the teacher’s
response that he/she is angry and being told of to shut up and don’t
complain on how things are done on his/her class. Majority or all of
the students would think that the teacher is a strict teacher.
c) The class continues with the teacher reading the poem aloud
himself/herself. The students would be confused and scared not
knowing whether or not the teacher is angry or simply doesn’t care.
This leads to uncertainties; the students might follow the instructions
the next time or still complains about it.
3. What would your own response be? Why?
My own response would simply be the same with the 2nd response
saying “If you don’t want to, then leave.” for such response gives more
impact rather than explaining each and everything considering that

they are first year college students. College students should know the
key importance of methods such as reading the poem aloud and how
disrespectful it is to cause disturbances during class, especially insensible
complains and reactions. This response also teaches the student, in a
strict manner, that their actions would corresponds with their results.
4. Is there any kind of response you would wish to avoid? Why?
The third response such as saying nothing and reading the poem
herself/himself would be something that I want to avoid. The uncertainty
of whether the teacher is angry or simply doesn’t care about what
happened only lead to confusion. If the teacher would reprimand or
response in an obvious way that he/she is angry, knowing this would lead
you to be more careful toward him/her in the future. This is an example
of respect due to hierarchy and fear whereas we are left with negative
thoughts towards the teacher. If the teacher would go to the means of
explaining, giving consideration and interacts with his/her student with
a passive voice his/her student would think of the teacher as someone
sensible and respect him not just because of hierarchy and fear but also
because students like him/her as a teacher. Not knowing whether the
teacher is simply strict or is accommodating towards students leads to
unknown future interactions and response thus triggering the fear of the
unknown.

TASK 4: As a responsible communicator, identify which are ethical to post on social media
and which are not. Explain your answer.
Social media is known as a free channel for sharing ideas, thoughts,
information etc. In general, it is an open channel for entertainment,
information and communication. There are different kinds of social media
platform, all with different and specific purpose. In consideration to what are
ethical to post in social media things such as quotes of the day, inspiration
messages or reflections, My day updates, outfit of the day, advertisements,
tutorials, recipe, personal photos, artworks, music, blogs, projects, campaigns,
and many more. Identifying which are ethical to post in social media can
simply be anything that we can but the contents should be appropriate,
honest and not illegal, offensive, abusive, plagiarized, misleading or intended
for wrong things. Contents such as Yeng Contstantino’s Siargo vlog, Logan
Paul’s Suicide forest video, Rappler’s article about the links between Renato
Corona and wealthy businessmen, Chris brown’s Ebola tweet, Clint Bondad’s
Instagram Story, and many more examples. Since social media is a wide
network of people with different backgrounds, belief, religions and practices,
such things should be considered when posting in public. Irresponsible posts
and uploads can harm others and lead to libel, defamation and cyber
bullying. Not only does it lead to crime but more importantly is because a
simple post can lead to a large audience thus can be inconsiderate and
harmful to others. A great addition to avoid being unethical when posting in
social media is knowing your audience, limiting your audience, and pointing
out your intentions.
