1. What is the context of this speech?

This speech was done in light of the typhoon that hit the Philippines back in 2013. It was the most
powerful storm that has ever been recorded to have hit the land. And accordingly, it bore devastating
results wherein mud was covering houses, people lost their homes and their loved ones, people had no
food, clothes. Everything was practically destroyed in all the places that were at the eye of the storm
back then.

2. What is its purpose?

The purpose of the speech was a call to action. For countries to address climate change and for
something to actually be done about it. It was a wake-up call to every country and to all the people all
over the world, to do something to help. For actions to be concretely made and for plans to be put in
place. Because if not, all of us will soon perish.

3. Who is the audience?

The audience being addressed in the speech were the participants in the conference held that year.
Specifically, the President of Poland and its citizens. And these conferences would usually involve
delegates from other countries as well because they will serve as the carriers of the message and the
mission that was being delivered and asked to be carried out, respectively.
4. What kind of word choice does Mr. Saño use to convey his message?

Mr. Saño was able to use word choices such as jargons and registers. He used jargons when he was
explaining the science and the technicality that was behind the typhoon that happened. Jargons
pertaining to its strength, wind speed and the like. And registers such as formally addressing the
President of Poland, being formal in the way that he spoke and him doing his best to evoke the
sympathy and sense of compassion in the hearts of all those that were listening to him, have all been
used.

5. In what parts do his tone and manner of delivery seem to change?

I was able to identify quite a number of times wherein his tone and manner of delivery seemed to
change. The very first one was after he finished thanking the President and the citizens of Poland, he
took the tone of telling something daunting and horrifying almost. Then the next one was out of despair
and anger towards anyone who was saying that climate change was not real. And lastly, he took the
tone of seeking for help and being passionate in calling out everyone to do something about the biggest
issue of this century.

6. As you identify the tone and manner of delivery, comment on the kinds of language register
used in certain parts of the speech.

Although the tones in the delivery of the speech does change, the manner in which he speaks remains
relatively the same all throughout the speech. He was very formal in the way that he spoke, which was
fitting for the kind of event that he was speaking in. Having used the same kind of register throughout
his speech did not affect the gravity of the message that he was speaking out to the world. He was able
to use formal register in such a way that the words he spoke was very compatible with the kinds of
emotions that he was speaking with, so everything worked out.

7. What parts of Mr. Saño's speech resonated with you the most? Why?

The part in his speech that resonated with me the most was when he called out all those people who
were saying that climate change didn’t exist. And this really resonated with me because up until now,
we, there are still people who think like that. Even if they have already seen that forests are burning in
Australia and in the US, they still think that way. Even if glaciers are now close to disappearing, they still
don’t believe it. It’s like they are waiting for everything to perish before they believe it and act on it.

8. How does Mr. Saño practice ethics in communicating his message?

Mr. Saño practiced ethics in communicating his message by being highly aware of the kind of message
that he was carrying out. And he was able to support his claims for his message, with facts and
technicality. None of what he was saying was made up or untrue.

9. In endeavoring to move an audience to think and act in a certain way, what must we consider in
our choice of words and use of language?

We must be mindful of our choice of words and the use of language when we want to encourage people
to act in a certain way because we want to make the message clear. We want for them to understand
clearly what it is exactly that we want them to do. Because words and the manner in which we use and
say it can be misinterpreted if the people listening are not aware of the reasons behind us saying it. So,
we need to be careful and we need to be precise in how we deliver because we want the right actions to
be executed.
