Physics Revision Assignment — 2021-22, Semester I

Class - VIII
Topic : Sound
Section A (Multiple Choice Questions)
Q.1 Ultrasound can be heard by
A) dog B) bat
C) dolphins D) all of the above
Q.2 During which natural phenomena infrasound is
produced
A) lightning B) cyclone
C) Earthquake D) cloud burst
Q.3 We can change a feeble sound to a loud sound by
A) increasing its frequency B) decreasing its frequency
C) increasing its amplitude D) decreasing its amplitude
Q.4 Ultrasonic waves
A) have high energy & more penetrating power
B) are highly directional
C) reflect back with a slight change in density of the medium
D) all of the above
Q.5 Indoor pests such as mice and other rodents are
sensitive to ultrasonic sound waves (sound
waves above the human range of frequency detection). Some
companies have produced rodent,
mosquitoes and other insects repellant devices that emit
ultrasonic waves .
A) true B) partly true
C) false D) true for infrasound
Section B
Q.1 State the audible range of sound for human beings.
Ans. The audible range of sound for human beings is 20Hz-
20,000Hz.
Q.2 Give the units of (i) loudness (ii) frequency (iii) time
period.
Ans.
Physical Quantity S.I unit
loudness decibel(dB)
frequency hertz(Hz) or s-1 or 1/s
time period second(s)
Q.3 What is eardrum?
Ans. The eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane, is a thin, delicate
membrane at the end of the ear canal. Its function is to transmit sound from the
air to the three bones of the human ear.
Q.4 Why can’t we hear each other on moon?
Ans. We cannot hear each other on the moon's surface because moon does not
have an atmosphere and sound requires medium for transmission. It cannot
travel through vacuum.
Q.5 Give functions of cochlea and three inter-connected bones.
Ans. The function of cochlea is to convert the sound signal to electrical impulses.
The function of three bones present in the ear is to amplify the sound signal.
Q.6 How is sound propogated ?
Ans. Sound propogates by the vibration of molecules of the medium.
Q.7 Why sound of car horn reaches us before the car?
Ans. The sound of car horn reaches us before the car as speed of sound is higher than the
speed of the car.
Section C
Q.8 What is the time period of a body vibrating at 200Hz.
Ans. Frequency= 200 Hz
Time period = 1 = 1/200 = 0.005 s
frequency

Q.9 If 200 oscillations are produced in 4 seconds, what its frequency? Also find time period.
Ans. Frequency = Number of oscillations = 200/4 = 50 Hz
total time taken
Q.10 Write three uses of ultrasonic sound.
Ans. The three uses of ultrasonic sound are :
 Ultrasonic waves are used to break stones in the kidney. High energy ultrasonic waves are
passed through the body without injuring it and break the stone into small pieces. These
small pieces move through the urinary tract and out of the body easily.
 In the process of electrocardiography(E.C.G.), the ultrasonic waves are used to form an
image of the heart using reflection and detection of these waves from various parts of the
heart.
 SONAR, Sound Navigation, and Ranging is a technique in which ultrasound waves are used
to find the depth of the sea.
Q.11 Mention two sources of noise pollution. How noise
pollution is harmful to human beings?
Ans. The two sources of noise pollution are vehicular traffic and
industries.
Noise pollution is harmful to human beings as it leads to-
 Headaches/ migraines
 Hypertension
 Cardio-vascular diseases
 Partial or complete hearing loss
Q.12 i. Draw a neat & labelled diagram of human ear.

ii. Draw a sound wave graphically.

iii. Draw loud & soft sound graphically.
Q.13 What are the three characteristics of sound. On what factors do they depend?
Ans. The three characteristics of sound are loudness, pitch and amplitude.
Q.14 Differentiate between (i) Music and Noise

S. No. Music Noise

1. Musical sounds are Noise is unpleasant to
pleasant to hear. hear .

2. They are produced They are produced

due to periodic and due to non-periodic
regular vibrations . and irregular
vibrations

3. Music has positive Noise is harmful

effects on human
beings
(ii) Tone and Note.
Tone Note
Tone is a sound of Note is a sound
single frequency. produced due to a
combination of
frequencies.

Q.15 Name the four categories of musical instrument. Give two

examples of each.
Ans. The four types of instruments :
1) Percussion instrument- Drum and tabla
2) String instrument- Sitar and guitar
3) Wind instrument- Flute and harmonica
4) Ghana vadya- Noot and ghatam
Q.16 Give reasons for the following :
i Girl's voice is shriller than boy's voice.
Ans. Girl's voice is shriller than boy's voice as the vocal cords are
shorter.
ii. Sound travels faster in solids than in liquids.
Ans. Sound travels faster in solids than in liquids as molecules are
tightly packed in solids.
iii. Ultrasound is used to find depth of sea through SONAR.
Ans. Ultrasound is used to find depth of sea through SONAR due to
their following properties:
 They can travel over long distances as a highly directional beam.
 They reflect back with a slight change in the density of the
medium.
