INPUT
You need to read and listen to the language. You need useful vocabulary and expressions. You
need to both learn and notice how the language is used. The more the better! In CONNECTED,
you can find great language input in the Student Book and Workbook, as well as text, audio, and
videos on the CONNECTED website.
PRACTICE
You need to practice the language. Learn and practice vocabulary and grammar. Practice
pronunciation. Practice the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Many learners have
studied English for years, but can’t speak it. CONNECTED gives you many chances to practice
using new language in a clear, easy way.
PERSONALIZATION
It is easier to learn a language when you can talk about things that are interesting to you or
useful in reaching your goals. Whenever you see the icon in CONNECTED, this is a chance
for you to give information about yourself or things that you are interested in. In the RACE units,
the icon provides opportunities to practice language for academic situations, and the
icon is for using language in workplace contexts.
MOTIVATION
This is perhaps the most important tool for language learning. Understanding your own goals
and checking your progress are essential to keeping you motivated in your language learning.
The CONNECTED site provides Personal Path tools for you to assess yourself and opportunities
to connect with me and with other learners using the series.

Families
Families are different all over the world. Countries like Niger and Liberia have an average of four to seven children
per family. But countries like America and Sweden usually have between two to three children per family. Those
numbers can change every year. In 2018, Americans had fewer babies than in the past. Here are some families that
are a little different. They are really big families.
Hello. My name is Sheldon. I’m ten years old. We live in America
and we have a big family. I live with my parents, my grandparents,
and my brother and sister. My sister is adopted. Sometimes my
brother and I have to watch her. Our house isn’t big enough for
everyone. I have to share a room with my brother. I hate sharing a
room. My grandparents live above our garage.

Identical interests?
Do you know any identical twins? Many people think that identical twins are alike in every way just
because they look the same. We talked to identical twins to find out if that is really true.
My name is Nissa. I have a twin sister, Krista. We look a lot alike. When we were younger it was fun. We had a lot
in common—we liked the same clothes and most of the same foods. We
read the same books. Now that we’re older we try to be a little different.
I like movies and television. I also like computers. What I really enjoy
is programming and building computers. I play video games with my
friends.
My name is Krista. I am Nissa’s twin sister. We used to have the
same haircut, but now we get different cuts so that people
can tell us apart. We share a lot of things. But I don’t really
like movies, television, or computers. I like sports and music.
I spend a lot of time practicing. When I’m not
in soccer practice I am at piano lessons or at band
practice. We have a lot in common but we are still very
different people.

Cycling
There are many different ways to get around. If you live in a city, you can walk to a lot of places. You can also drive
or take the subway or bus. Recently, more people are choosing to get around by riding bikes.
Copenhagen has always been a bike-friendly city. They are building a Cycle Super Highway, a series of bike paths
from the city to the suburbs. The Cycle Super Highway makes it easier for people in the suburbs to bike to work or
to school.
Amsterdam is also a very bike-friendly city. Almost
everyone who lives there owns a bike. In fact, there are
more bicycles there than there are people! Everyone
says riding a bike is the best way to get around. If you
visit, you can go on a bike tour.
There are many cities in the United States that are
trying to become more bike-friendly. Boston and New
York both have new bike rental stations set up all over
the city. You can rent a bike from one station and return
it somewhere else. Biking is a good way to get around
crowded cities.

Go together
Did you know that some football players practice
ballet? Or that learning music and math can be related?
Though these things seem very different, they have a
lot in common. Many people have learned to use them
together to be better at both.
Ballet dancers need to have good balance and mental
focus. Both of these skills can help a football player with
his game. Ballet and football both work a lot of the same
muscles. Ballet can also strengthen ankles and feet,
making football players less likely to get hurt. So if you’re
thinking about football maybe you should also try ballet.
It might give you an edge over the other players.
In a similar way, teaching children how to play a musical instrument can help
them develop their math skills. Learning how to read music teaches kids
about division and fractions. Counting beats can help kids learn about whole
numbers.
Mastering a musical instrument can help kids with memory and
concentration. Learning a musical instrument has many benefits, but a better
understanding of math may be the most surprising!

Tiny houses
Houses come in all shapes and sizes. Have you ever thought of living in a smaller house? What about a tiny house?
Today, there are a lot of people who are choosing to live in tiny houses.
Some people choose to live in tiny houses because they care about the environment. A small house uses
fewer materials, creates less waste, and takes less energy to heat and cool. A big house simply can’t be as
environmentally friendly because it uses too many resources.
Other people choose to live in tiny houses because
they can save you a lot of money. There is a family in
Virginia who built a tiny house after they went into
debt when they lost their restaurant. They bought a
piece of land and built a tiny house on it. The house is
only 168 square feet*. There is a little kitchen; next to
the kitchen is a small living room that is also a dining
room. Over everything else, there are two sleeping
lofts—one with two beds for the children and one for
the adults. You can fit a lot of things in a tiny house if
you plan it well!

Taxi!
In any big city in any country, you will find taxi drivers. Taxis are an essential way of getting around for many city
dwellers and visitors. It can be hard to be a taxi driver. They need to know how long it will take to get to any given
destination. They need to know all of the addresses in their city, and they need to know lots of different ways to get
to them. They can’t just rely on a GPS. Sometimes the GPS is wrong or doesn’t work.
London taxi drivers have to go through lots of training and testing
before they can even get a license. They have to know all of the
addresses, the shortest routes, and alternative routes to anywhere
in the city. Many London taxi drivers also serve as tour guides. They
have to know local monuments in order to point them out to people.
Melbourne just added a new driving test that taxi drivers have to
take in order to get their licenses. Questions will test everything from
knowledge of geography to ability to speak English.
So next time you have a good taxi driver, remember to thank them.

Time management
Do you feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done? There are so many distractions that it
can sometimes be hard to meet all your responsibilities. Try some of these tricks to help you.
Get a calendar and write down all of your deadlines, meetings, and
appointments for the next several months. This will help you plan because
you’ll know what is coming up.
Make a daily to-do list. Start by writing down everything you have to do in
the order it needs to get done. By writing it down you’ll know everything
that needs to happen that day. Make sure to check items off as you finish
them. This will help you keep track of things throughout the day.
Take a look at your to-do list and write down how long you think each thing
will take. Then as you finish each task, write down how long it actually took.
You may also want to keep track of how long you spend on the Internet and
watching TV. They can be a big time drain. Keeping track over several days
or weeks will help you figure out where all of your time is going.

Timed out
How many hours a week do you think people should work?
Do you believe that employers should give workers paid vacation time? How people answer those questions often
depends on where they live. Many countries require that employers give workers paid time off.
The government of Austria makes employers give workers 35 days off a year (13 public holidays and 22 vacation
days). Austrians also work fewer hours than people in some other countries. The average Austrian employee works
1,330 hours a year, or around 25 hours a week.
Other countries, however, don’t require employers to give paid time off at
all. In the USA, for example, there is no paid time off requirement. In fact, 1 in
4 Americans don’t get any paid time off of work. Americans also work more
than many other countries. Americans work an average of 1,797 hours a year
(around 34.5 hours a week).
Employees need time to relax and time with their families. This helps them
perform better at work. So if you have a choice of where to live and work, you
might consider moving to a country with a good vacation time policy and
fewer working hours.
