ART APPRECIATION

THS

ACTIVITY NO. 001

Direction: Watch the video documentary “Sa Duyan ng Sining” and be guided with these
questions:
1. Who are the artists featured in the video documentary?
Sa Duyan ng Sining featured 5 artists from a different genre of arts. Including musicians
Levi Celerio and Lucio San Pedro, sculptor Julie Lluch, filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik, and
dancer Leonor Orosa Goquigco.
Levi Celerio also known as “Mang Levi” grew up in Tondo and learned to play violin at
the age of 11. Mang Levy was really born talented, when he was young, she had a
crush with this girl named Laling. Because of his strong admiration to her, he started
writing a song about her to express how he feels. On the other hand, musician Lucio
San Pedro grew up in the City of Angono, Rizal and learned how to play banduria,
octavina and banjo when he was only 9 years of age. Lucio has a very shocking story,
he said that he got a grade of 45 in music because he always steals music to his
Maestra for him to practice in the middle of the night where the result was, he will be
very sleep in class. Dancer Leonor Orosa started her education when he was only 4
years old at the province of Jolo, Sulu. She fell in love with the dance Russian ballet
dancing so, her father promised that if she finished high school being a valedictorian her
father would send her to Manila to study ballet, and she did it. Sculptor Julie Lluch first
taught to an all-girls private elementary school before becoming a sculptor. She first fell
in love to sculpting when she was watching a television where she saw a potter
demonstrate his pottery craft, then the next day Julie started to try kneading a bag of
clay with a water. That is when she did her first piece of art. Lastly, the famous
filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik who finished his master’s in Business Administration in
Economics at Wharton School of Finance in the University of Pennsylvania for five
years. Imagining he would become a business man wearing a suit and tie but when he
decided to go to Germany where he met his wife, everything has changed. His wife
brings out the artist in him or the Kidlat Tahimik inside of him.

2. Discuss the contributions of each artist to the Philippine Art.

All the artist mentioned above has a lot of contribution to the Philippine Art which has
been written to the history book if the Philippines. Levi Celerio was recorded to the
Guinness Book of World record as the only artist in the world who knows how to make
music using a leaf. Mang Levi started to write songs for a film during the year of 1930, it
was for the movie “Dalagang bukid” led by Rogelio Dela Rosa and Rosa Del Rosario.
This was the beginning of the rise of his name in the field of music scoring. In the year
1993 Mang Levi received a “Gawad Urian” award from the Manunuri ng Pelikulang
Pilipino. Surprisingly, Mang Levy approximately wrote 4,000 songs in total since the
beginning of his career, possible reason for his name to be recorded again in the
Guinness Book of World Records. And in the year 1997 Mang Levi was recognized as a
National Artist for Music and Literature. On the other hand, Lucio San Pedro was
appointed as the chairman of Composition Department at Centro Escolar University
during the year 1943. And at the year 1947, he was sent as a scholar of Filipino Youth
Symphony Orchestra at Juilliard School of Music in America under the supervision of
Propesor Bernard Wagenaar. He also became an ASEAN awardee in Singapore at the
year 1990. After a year, Maestro Lucio San Pedro was also recognized as a National
Artist for Music during the year 1991. Sculptor Julie Lluch first exhibit was launch during
1978 entitled, “If Joaquin then, Villa or Bust!”. During the year of 1983, Julie helped
established KALAYAAN, an association of feminist intellectual. Feminist artist is an art
of pursuation and has an agenda to make. Equality, justice and a better quality for men,
women, and children, in other words they want to change the world want to change how
the world The year 1980 she became a renewed Christian which helped her in
becoming an artist. Dancer Leonor Orosa is the so-called Mother of Philippine Theater
Dance and she is the first to use the theme revolving around indigenous culture. One of
Orosa’s greatest work was the “Filipinescas: Philippine Life, Legend and Lore in
Dance”, it was two hour long and has been aired to the four corners of the world. Leonor
Orosa was awarded as a National Artist for Dance in the year 1970. Lastly, filmmaker
Kidlat tahimik first started to be serious in the field of filmmaking in Munich, Germany at
the year 1972. Kidlat Tahimik believed the importance Indo-genius shall continue to
enrich our culture. Kidlat’s son, Kawayan is a sculptor, so he established an installation
art which is compose of the prayers for Katipunan in the year 1998 influenced by his
father art. Kidlat Tahimik was awarded as a National Artist in Film and Broadcast at the
year 2018.

3. Discuss the hindrances each artist experienced before they reach the fame in
their own of field of specializations?
Before they experience the success and the fame they have, they also experience
many hindrances that test their faith and love in art. Staring with Musician Levi Celerio,
despite of the thousand songs written by Mang Levy he was not able to receive royalties
from most of his own songs. Some of his song was being taken from him and being
distributed without his permission. But despite all of this, Mang Levy did not take any
legal actions because he said that “who cares? It is only money” and he believed that
“When you lose money, you lose nothing.” Another musician who experiences
hindrances was Lucio San Pedro. He was from a poor family, for this reason, he needs
to work to support his studies. He was a full scholar in the University of Philippines
because of his good grades. University of the Philippines is also the place where his
interest in Filipino folk song developed. Down to sculptor Julie Lluch, she was a young
mother. Because of that she experienced a lot of anxiety, sadness, she was so sick and
desperate, then she found art, art saved her, art changed her life. And a very inspiring
line that Julie said to the documentary “In order to really live, you have to know how to
die.” Next is the dance Leonor Orosa, a very common challenges to all the artist,
athlete, and all the Filipino who is willing to represent the Philippines to the world. The
lack of support and funds. Leonor had to fund using her own money for the
performances that she wants to do, the costumes, and the travel costs. Leonor said
that, government should help in improving the field of dance and many more because
Filipinos are so talented. And lastly, filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik. Just like the problem of
most people, Kidlat was torn before in choosing which career he should take, but then
he listened to the advice of his friend that the world needs more economist that artist so
he pursued MBA. But he realized he was very unsatisfied, there was this person inside
him that wants to come out. After years of being locked up, he finally had the courage to
let the person in him come out. That is when Kidlat Tahimik born.
They have a very inspiring story that we should learn. It is normal to have many
hindrances in your journey, just keep in mind that it will all be worth it in the end.
