Q. Identify any Indian companies, one in each of the following sectors- IT, Banking,
and Healthcare, which has created a competitive advantage through performing different
activities from rivals, internally consistent and difficult- to -imitate.
Some of the Indian companies that have created a competitive advantage are:
1. WIPRO TECHNOLOGIES (IT Sector)
Wipro Technologies, part of Wipro Ltd. is a leading global provider of world class IT
solutions. It makes up for around 67% of the company’s total revenues and is one of the
fastest growing businesses of the company. Wipro believes in innovation and providing best
quality to its consumers by combining people, processes and technologies to give innovative
solutions. Wipro Technologies has a high-powered client base which boasts of names like
GM, Sony, Nike, Nortal, NYSE etc. To stay ahead of competition and be a leader in this
industry the company follows many strategies to ensure it not only survives in the
competitive environment but also thrives in competition and emerges a winner. Some of the
strategies adopted by Wipro technologies to successfully compete in the overseas market are
mentioned below.
• One of the strategies adopted by Wipro to stay ahead in competition is that the company
is using a small force of high-level strategists who are focused on specific industries and
who can compete with any one for any given project.
• The other strategy adopted by Wipro Technologies is “Power Consulting”. Wipro created
development centres within its offices, each centre dedicated to a single important
customer. The idea behind this strategy was to promote relationships that would create
revenue for the company. At present Wipro hosts development centres for GM, Hewlett-
Packard and other global companies which help them defeat their competitors and stay
ahead. This strategy was come up with as a result of need to formulate a strategy which
cannot be replicated or copied by the competitors easily and therefore thinks of strategies
that will enable the company to gain a competitive edge. Wipro knew that the company
could prosper by emphasizing on providing services of increasingly high value to the
customers.
• Wipro Technologies is also pursuing growth through inorganic routes or by becoming
scale players and focusing their efforts on specialized and preferred areas. To stay ahead
of competition the company invests in new skills/ technologies and also diversifies risk
by venturing into and offering customers multiple service lines.
• Another effective strategy implemented by Wipro is adoption of Employee Self- Service
portal that has enabled the company to handle the issue of rapid increase in employee
headcount. By adopting this strategy the company could eliminate paper based processes
which would take time and also crash cycle times of employee services. This way the
company could sustain its growth and improve the operational efficiencies.
• Wipro’s main competitive advantage is the company’s talent pool as it boats of Indian
and western employees who are very educated and expertise in their fields. Wipro has
developed their employees in such a way that they are completely dedicated to their
project which has enhance the company’s intellectual capital, diminished needs for any
rework and provided a sense of security to the clients and the employees.

2. KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK (Banking Sector)


Kotak Mahindra Bank is the company of Kotak group. It is one of the fastest growing
banks and the most admired financial institution in India. The bank offers transaction
banking, operates lending verticals, manages IPOs and provides working capital loans. The
principal business activities of the bank are organized into consumer banking, commercial
banking, treasury and other financial services. In order to stay ahead of the competition, the
company follows few strategies that are mentioned below.
• Pricing Strategy: The private sector bank industry has cutthroat competition in proving
the best customer experience, suitable interest rates and convenience. Kotak Mahindra
Bank follows a competitive strategy in pricing to maintain and acquire more customers. It
provides an interest rate of 6.90% on fixed deposits, which is at par with its competitors.
• Proper use of Search Engine Marketing: Kotak Mahindra bank made an effective use of
the SEM while its competitors did not up until the recent times. The use of SEM has put
the bank on the map.
• Use of brand ambassador: Kotak Mahindra used brand ambassadors which proved to be
very beneficial than its competitors. Most of its competitors failed to make use of the
brand ambassadors while Kotak Mahindra Bank excelled at it.
• Kotak’s content was not always promotional. They used informational content trying to
increase the financial literacy.
• Kotak Mahindra Bank has a competitive edge over its private sector peers with higher fee
income generation capability, asset quality management as well as effectively managing
financial business subsidiaries.
3. CIPLA LTD (Healthcare Sector)
Cipla Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company, headquartered in
Mumbai, India. Cipla primarily develops medicines to treat respiratory, cardiovascular
disease, arthritis, diabetes, weight control and depression and other medical conditions. The
competitive advantage of Cipla Ltd are as follows:
• Indian generics are taking advantage of the global generics market and expanding to
developed countries. Cipla is well positioned as it has a competitive edge of low cost
manufacturing and advance chemistry capabilities.
• One of the major competitive advantages of Cipla is that it has Application Programming
Interface integrated product development which has rolled out a programme for adopting
principles of Green Chemistry which would enable the company to develop environment
friendly processes.
• Cipla provides and supports to cancer patients by providing them low-cost medicines and
it also initiated a “No touch Breast Scan” which is a step forward to
screening technology in India.
• Cipla is one of the very few Indian companies to offer a wide range of ARV products
through C-GA for the treatment of HIV/AIDS in both children and adults.
• Cipla has invested heavily in employee training and development, resulting in a team that
is not just highly competent but also driven to achieve more.
