Exercise 2.3
BSEDE-EDE1A 9:00-10:30 AM
1. What do you know about the period of the painting? Include in the
discussion following: biographical data of the artist, information about how the
painting was receive in its time, and important social, political and economic
constructs of the time.
As far as I know, the period of the painting is during the Spanish colonization in
the Philippines.
Juan Luna
Juan Luna de San Pedro y Novicio Ancheta, better known as Juan Luna, was a
Filipino painter, sculptor and a political activist of the Philippine Revolution during
the late 19th century. He became one of the first recognized Philippine artists.
Spolarium
It was rewarded as the first gold medal in 1884 from the Exposición Nacional de
Bellas Artes in Madrid. It shows the time when Filipino where colonized by the
Spaniards. They were just treated as if they value less than animals. Filipino’s
social, moral and political life in that time includes humanity in severe ordeal,
humanity unredeemed, reason and idealism in open struggle with prejudice,
fanaticism and justice.
It is also known as Interior d’un Cafi meaning (inside a café) is an 1892 oil on
canvas impressionist painting. In 1904 at the World Fair’s Saint Louis Exposition in
the United States, this painting won Silver Medal. The lady in the painting has
actually a "geographical likeness" to the mirrorimage or the map of the archipelago
of the Philippines. You put a map of the Philippines over her and it seems she is
really the Philippines at that time. Her knees (we kneel when we pray) matched to
Cebu in the map where Roman Catholicism started and on her navel (means birth) is
the Kawit, Cavite map where our First Independence was declared and a lot more
coincidences! Her left arm a bit detached in a downward slant signifies the Palawan
islands! She appears to be strangled too as there is a line on top of her head
because that time Philippines were under colony.
Fernando Amorsolo
Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto was one of the most important artists in the history of
painting in the Philippines. Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine
landscapes. He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of
light.
Palay Maiden
Amorsolo’s 1920 masterpiece “Palay Maiden” celebrated the Filipina in her own
likeness, carrying new harvest to symbolize the hope for a rising nation.
Antipolo Fiesta
2. What are the qualities profound in the painting that shows the skill of the
artist in replicating reality?
3. What evidences can you provide to support your main claim on the important
depiction of the painting?
It is based on real life and it happens when the Philippines is under colonization.
