Lesson One

DAY ONE

Activity Time Description

Launch - 5 minutes ● Prompt: How can and do we categorize music?


● Scholars share out how we put songs and music
into different categories
● Scholars share genres that they know or enjoy and
why

How Has 10 minutes ● Prompt: how has music evolved and changed over
Music time? How can we tell by listening?
Changed ● Listen to “Evolution of Music” by the Pentatonix
Over Time? ● Post discussion: what did you notice? How did the
music shift from the start of the 11th Century to
today?

Listening 25 minutes ● As a group, the class will go through different


Activity musical genres and compare and contrast them,
talking about the hear and notice, and if they enjoy
that style or not.
● While listening, scholars are taking notes on their
own note sheet in GC
● After each genre, the scholars will have a chance
to openly discuss their thoughts and opinions

Exit Ticket 5 minutes ● Scholar submit their notes for the day

Launch - 5 minutes ● Wrap up listening activity, talking through the


genres and how we hear them

Launch 10 minutes ● Launch the musical genre research project.


Scholars will be choosing one genre to focus in on
for a research project.

Discourse 25 minutes ● What does this genre sound like?


● List famous musicians or performers in this genre.
● What are some famous songs or works from this
genre?
● After researching this genre, is it still a favorite of
yours?
● What is your favorite musician or piece from this
genre?
● Is there anything you don’t like about this genre?

Exit Ticket 5 minutes ● Scholar fill out a form saying which genre they are
interested in, and if they would like to work in a
group or not

DAY FOUR

Activity Time Description

Launch - 15 minutes ● Interactive listening game. Teacher plays out two


versions of the same song. One is the original, the
other is a different genre cover
● Scholars discuss the differences and why its
impactful
● How does a genre influence a generation?
● Scholars react in Do Now form

Launch 5 minutes ● Go over the musical genre research project.


Scholars will be choosing one genre to focus in on
for a research project.
● Show an example
● Leave time for questions

Discourse 20 minutes ● Using the prompts, scholars work independently or


in small groups on their project
● What does this genre sound like?
● List famous musicians or performers in this genre.
● What are some famous songs or works from this
genre?
● After researching this genre, is it still a favorite of
yours?
● What is your favorite musician or piece from this
genre?
● Is there anything you don’t like about this genre?

Exit Ticket 5 minutes ● Scholars record their work process on a google


form
