Physics Error and Uncertainty PDF

A student named Marina measured her physics textbook and recorded measurements of 20 cm, 19 cm, and 21 cm for three trials, but mistakenly read 20 cm as 2 cm. Another student's group measured the length of a corridor and recorded different lengths. A dressmaker took body measurements with a stretched tape measure that resulted in a dress being too tight. The document identifies the types of errors in these scenarios and calculates the mean, variance, standard deviation, and measured range using data from an experiment measuring the range of a projectile over 10 trials.

Errors and Uncertainty

1. Identify the type of errors evident in the following scenarios. Briefly explain your answer.
RE- Random Error
SE- Systematic Error

a. Marina tried to measure the thickness of her Physics textbook which is originally 2
centimeters thick. Her measurement readings for three consecutive trials are 20 cm, 19
cm and 21 cm. She mistakenly read 20 cm instead of 2 cm.

Random Error – In this scenario, Marina made a random error since she
mistakenly read the wrong measurement. Error is caused by careless measurement.

b. Your group was tasked to measure the length of your corridor. One of your classmates

recorded the length to be 20 meters, another said its 24.5 meters and for you its 18.33

Random Error – Having different recorded measurements with my classmates

can be the result of a random error. It can be careless measurement or doing the wrong
technique since the results have no pattern or they are inconsistent.

c. A dress maker took the body measurement using stretched tape measure and forwarded

to her master cutter. The master cutter drafted the pattern of the given measurement

and returned the cut cloth. Upon fitting in, the owner of the dress finds it too tight short.

Systematic Error - In this situation, the problem may be caused by systematic

error to the part of the dress maker since she took the body measurements using
stretched tape measure. This is an example of error caused by wrong calibration of the

instrument.

In an experiment, 10 trials were done to determine the range of the projectile. The
measurement for the range of the projectile in centimeters are as follows:
