This topic gives you an overview about audiovisual aids as one of the types of
instructional materials use as teaching strategy to get the interest of the students. As
you go through this report, remember to search for the answer to the focus question:

Identify the audiovisual aids as one of the instructional materials
Understand the objectives and purpose of audiovisual aids
Explain the advantage and disadvantage of using audiovisual aid
Create an audiovisual aids
III. LESSON PROPER
It is generally accepted that the best learning takes place when the greatest
number of senses are stimulated. The use of devices or audio-visual materials will
stimulate the greatest number of senses. For this reason, good teachers have
always used devices or audiovisual materials. A device is any means, other than the
subject matter to the learner.

Good’s Dictionary of Education
Audiovisual aids are also called instructional material.
These include pictures, slides, radios, videos, models, maps, sounds and
other audio visual tools.
Examples of Audiovisual Aids
Slides
Tapes
Films
Filmstrips
Television
Video
Multimedia
Significance of Audiovisual Aids
These aids accelerate the teaching learning activity in number of ways by
which teaching become more effective and learning becomes easier and
more lasting.
These devices used to make the learning experience more concrete, more
realistic and more dynamic.
All such aids make the knowledge clear to us through our senses.
All these learning material make the learning situations as real as possible
and give us firsthand knowledge.
These aids help the learner in remembering the things in a better way.
Objectives of Audiovisual Aids
To enhance teacher skill which help to make teaching-learning process
effective
Make learners active in the classroom
Communicate them according to their capabilities
Develop lesson plan and build interest
To make students good observer
Develop easy and understandable learning
Follow child concerned learning process
Involve intimation in objects
By audiovisual aids, we usually mean the most modern or the most recently
use of this methods (films, filmstrips, radio and television).
The global use of audiovisual aids always gives the best result.
Concept of Audiovisual Aids
Audiovisual aids are sensitive tools used in teaching and as avenues for learning.
These are planned educational materials that appeal to the senses of the people and
quicken learning, facilitates for clear understanding.
A Chinese Proverb: “If I hear, I forget; If I see, I remember, If I do, I know”
says the importance of perception in teaching learning situation.
Seeing -87%
Hearing -07%
Odor -03%
Touch -02%
Taste -01%
Audiovisual aids enhanced clarity in communication.
Provides diversity in method.
Advantages of Audiovisual Aids
Research has showed that learning is based on perception. Perception is
when the senses gain information from the environment. In addition, learning is most
effective two or more senses are being used simultaneously to receive information.
For example, using vision and hearing to learn something is believed to be more
effective than just seeing something. These findings show that the uses of
audiovisuals are an effective method for students to achieve greater knowledge.
Helps the students to retain more concept permanently
Students can study well when they are inspired properly through different
visual aids
AV aids develop the knowledge
It minimize the time (for teacher) to present information
It brings the child towards active learning
Disadvantages of Audiovisual Aids
Technical Problems
Regardless of your equipment, there are many things that could go
wrong that may derail your presentation. A bulb might burn out on your
projector or it might be blurry or hard to focus.
Student Distractions
Visual aids are more of a distraction if used throughout the entire
presentation versus during key points.
Time
AV presentations can take a considerable amount of time to prepare.
Space
If you choose to use an audiovisual aid, the size of the room should be
taken into consideration.
Convenience
Certain audiovisual aids such as VCRs for older video recordings, can
be bulky and difficult to transport.
Purpose of Audiovisual Aids
1. To provide a basis for more effective perceptual and conceptual learning.
2. To initiate and sustain attention, concentration, and personal involvement of
the students in learning.
3. To provides concreteness, realism and life likeness in the teaching-learning
situation.
4. To bring remote events either space or time into the classroom.
5. To increase the meaningfulness of abstract concepts.
6. To gain practical skill.
7. To introduce opportunity for situational or field types of learning
Principles of Audiovisual Aids
It should be meaningful and purposeful
It should be simple
It should be accurate in every respect
It should be interesting and motivating
It should be completely relevant to the topic to fulfil the desired learning
objectives
IV. DISCUSSION POINTS
Excellent teachers understand the importance of audiovisual aids in the
learning process. Audiovisual aids are teaching tools that educators use to
complement their academic lessons. Examples of audiovisual aids include
videos, music clips, flip charts, slideshow presentation and overhead
transparencies. Audiovisual aids should not be used as the only teaching
method but should be incorporated periodically throughout lessons to
provide extra information for students. Students catch on quickly when
their teacher understands the importance of charts in the teaching and
learning process.
AV aids in the classroom add diversity to an instructor’s teaching method.
Whether you teach a group of pre-schoolers or college students,
incorporating audiovisual aids into your lessons helps you keep student’s
attention. Retention of information typically is greater when AV aids
complement or present information. Remembering the importance of
charts in the teaching and learning process will create an active learning
environment.
The importance of audiovisual aids is evident when it comes time to teach
a new or abstract concept that may be difficult to picture or grasp.
Furthermore, we need to use audiovisual aids in all the subjects to make
educational better.
Among the implicit goals that media can help achieve are the following:
-Attracting attention
-Developing interest
V. PROCESSING QUESTIONS
1. Based on the definitions about audiovisual aid, what does audiovisual
means for you?
2. How audiovisual aids can affects the learning of a student?
3. What is the main purpose of audiovisual aid?

the topic.
VII. SUMMARY
Audiovisual aids are a great tool for teachers to use to enhance the
education of their students. There are a variety of audiovisual aids which can
be used a variety of teaching methods to reach all students with their varying
learning preferences. Also be sure to utilize audiovisual aids which will not
distract from students’ learning experiences.
Audiovisual aids in the classroom can enhance teaching methods and
improve student comprehension. Today’s technology offers many choices to
the informed educator who wishes to capitalize on a new generation’s
appetite for multimedia presentations. Lesson plans that incorporate the use
