Polygons: Properties and Activities for Grade 7

This document provides learning materials on polygons. It defines a polygon as a plane figure formed by three or more line segments called sides that meet at endpoints called vertices. Convex polygons have interior angles that do not contain interior points, while concave polygons do. The number of sides determines the type of polygon, such as triangles having three sides. Formulas are given for calculating the number of diagonals in an n-sided polygon based on the number of sides and vertices. Activities include identifying different polygons and whether figures are polygons or not.

USLEM WEEK 5

LEARNING COMPETENCIES

Illustrate polygons:
(a) convexity;
(b) angles; and
(c) (c) sides
WHAT IS POLYGON?
A polygon is a plane figure that is
formed by three or more segments
called sides of the polygon and each
endpoint where the sides meet is
called the vertex of the polygon.
CONVEX AND NONCONVEX
A polygon is convex if no
line that contains a side of
the polygon contains a point
in the interior of the polygon.
CONVEX AND NONCONVEX
A polygon that is not convex
is called nonconvex or
concave.

POLYGON RIDDLES
Fill in the blank with
the correct answer to
each riddle.
1. I am any figure with four
sides and four angles
Who do you think I am?
2. I am any closed shape
with straight sides.
Who am I?
3. If you count my sides,
You will find three.
Who could I be?
4. I have six sides and the
same number of angles.
What shape am I?
5. I am a polygon.
I am a quadrangle.
All my sides are the same length.
None of my angles are right angles.
What am I?
ACTIVITY 3A

Example:
Given: 13 sides Given: 13 sides
Formula: Formula: d = n – 3
Solution: 13 – 3
Solution:
=10 vertices
