LESSON 1

WHAT IS ART: INTRODUCTION AND ASSUMPTIONS

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, the learners must be able to:

1. Understand the meaning of art and humanities;

2. Analyze the role of art in the lives of people;

3. Appreciate art as part of being human;
4. Learn by engaging based on personal experiences with art.

Art is infinitely around us since time began. Humans cannot deny that art
is significantly part of the lives of people. Art is not just merely art for it is a form
or way of expressing one’s feelings or emotions through either visual, or may
be in the form of poem, sculpture, or even through means of music, and many
more. Just by looking the surroundings, unquestionably, art is all around us.
From the choice of book a student usually reads, from the type of clothes
millennials usually wear, from the favorite noontime show a market vendor
avidly watches every weekdays down to the preferred dance music of
Zumba fanatics, all, just point out to what is so called, “art”.
Art came from the Latin word, ars which means a skill or craft. During the
Medieval Ages, it meant as any form of learning from books, which includes
logic and grammar, and anything to do with magic and astrology for people
during those times believed in super powers and used stars as their guide.
(Collingwood, 1938).
And it was also during the Renaissance Period that art reacquired its
meaning relating to ancient form or craft. Renaissance Period was also known
as the time of “rebirth”. It was believed to be dating back during the 14 th
century up to 17th century when some of the greatest thinkers and
philosophers lived. This was also the era of the bridging of the gap between
the Middle Ages and of the modern-day civilization.

TRIVIA:
According to a journal in Science, published in 2018, the Neanderthals were
humanities’ first artists and their paintings were discovered in the caves of Spain.

ASSUMPTIONS OF ART

1. Art is universal.

With art, age is no big deal with it. In every country, regardless of generation,
art has always been immortal. This is evident just like in high school wherein
the subjects of Ibong Adarna and Florante at Laura never gets old. Same with
classic love songs that have been playing for decades and years as old time
favorites especially in videokes. They were loved because of their undying
messages. As the old saying goes, “Old but gold”. Who would also forget the
grooves of the Street Boys and Universal Motion Dancers during the 90’s that
most of the teenagers adored back then? Same goes with the undying love
story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
In a nutshell, this just proves that it does not matter what era, generation, or
civilization one was born for art has always existed in every places and all ages.
2. Art is not nature.

There have always been a

lot of misconceptions between art and
nature. But this should not be the case
since art and nature are two different
things.
Just for example the making of movies
using modern technology such as The Lord
of the Rings Trilogy by J.R. Tolkien. The
background and settings of the movie
could be depicted as inspired from the
ancient times which is designed by the
graphic experts and movie editors of the
said movie – that is art.
While nature itself cannot be changed, it
is what it is. It cannot be customized nor
upgraded for art is a man’s way of
interpreting nature while the latter is what is
given and provided to us, it is what
surrounds us and it is created only by God.

3. Art involves experience.

Having the knowledge and having experience are basically alike. A

parent who does not have his or her own child would not know the greatest
feeling of parenthood and raising a child until he or she does not have a child.
Take for the instance the experience of falling in love, getting hurt and moving
on. A person who never fell in love yet could not relate with things as such
unless it is not experienced by the person. A singer could be accused as fake
if he or she does not know how to hit notes and sing beautifully and uniquely.
With art, it should always have experience. One cannot understand nor
explain well a particular thing unless he or she has not experience it on his or
her own. There has always been the saying that “Experience is the best
teacher”. By having experience, it means the “actual doing of a certain thing
or something” (Dudley et al., 1960).
To experience something means the usage of the senses. A person cannot
appreciate a beautiful movie until he was not able to watch it. How can a
person know the taste of a sumptuous pizza until he has not eaten it? The
scent of a lovely red rose won’t be appreciated until one does not smell it. A
nice song would not be appreciated until it is heard. This is how experience is
connected to arts. With every experience entails an emotion or if how one
would feel for not experiencing is just like missing half of a lifetime.

THINGS TO PONDER

Art is man’s greatest and simplest way of expression and art itself has its
different assumptions which are: its being universal, its being not nature and its
involving experience. It is being universal that makes art exist since time began
and will exist until there is life. It is being not nature for art is simply not nature.
And it is involving experience for art would not be appreciated until one has
not experienced it.
Nature is unquestionably a work of art but nature is not anything created by
humans. Art and nature are two different things for the latter is only created by
the most creative artist, God.

“For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while

imagination embraces the entire world, and there ever will be to know and
understand.”
-Albert Einstein-
