ART APPRECIATION

LESSON 2

ART APPRECIATION: CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION, AND

EXPRESSION

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, the learners must be able to:

1. Appreciate the power of imagination in its relation to creating art;

2. Distinguish the difference of art and nature;
3. Understand the difference between describing emotions and expression;
4. Analyze and understand the value of personal experiences.

Creativity is one characteristic that not all people may be talented at but it is no doubt
that each human being is gifted with the talent in creating art. Creativity is one thing that
sets apart one art work from another, making each work of art unique and a masterpiece.
With creativity comes the great power of imagination making the artist unravel his talent
and ability to create something out of how he feels, his emotions – a way for a man to
express his real emotions as evident in paintings, songs, novels, etc. Saying I love you is
only a matter of describing what one feels for it is only said while giving of flowers and writing
of love letters are far more of means of expression for they are examples of ways of showing
love and affection.
There are numerous ways to express one’s feelings and emotions through arts and they
are as follows:

VISUAL ARTS
This form of art is the easiest to determine for under this category is the use of the sense
of sight and is visual in nature of course. They are the most likely well-known form of art since
they could be easily seen. They may be in the form f paintings, drawings, doodles, drawings,
sketches, printing, sculptures, digital imaging, videos, and the like. Visual arts are created
based on how the artists have seen them and are perceived depending on the artist’s
perception. (Collins & Riley,1931)

FILM
The art of creating films includes
significant elements such as lighting,
visual effects, musical score, the
direction of the film, and many more.
Film pertains to the form of art in
which it uses still images so as for it to
create illusions of movements. With
the aid of modern technology that
the world has today, creating films
has become a lot easier through
using Computer-Generated
Imagery (CGI), animation
techniques, or the use of the
motion-picture camera or movie
camera. Creating films can use
either of these or a combination of
them. In creating films, such as The
Avengers End Game, the producers,
film-makers and the director made
use of their wildest imaginations in
order to come up with a top-
grossing movie such as this for the
enjoyment and satisfaction of its
viewers. This makes filmmaking not
just a work of art but as an industry.
Award-giving bodies and renowned
film festivals such as the Oscars and
Manila Film Festival take into account of recognizing excellent and world-
class films.

PERFORMANCE ART
Performance art is a form of art wherein the artist’s medium is none other than the
human body in order to perform collaborating with the other forms of art like visual arts with
the aid of props, sound, etc. With this form of art comes the usage of the important
elements: time, the place of the performance, the performer(s), and finally, the

relationship of the performer(s) to their audience (Moma Learning, n.d.).Performance

art is usually live that makes it intangible or cannot be bought or traded just like any
commodity.

POETRY PERFORMANCE

This is an art form wherein it uses words combined with movements accompanied
by the tone of voice, volume, and of course, the intensity of the delivery. Poetry is a
form of art wherein the artist expresses his emotions through the use of words. Words
are carefully chosen that exhibit strong emotions depending on what the artist wants
to convey either to narrate, persuade, argue, or convince his audience through his
delivery of words accompanied by either emotions of anger, happiness, sadness, etc.

ARCHITECTURE

Art has always been about creating beautiful things while architecture has
always been about making of beautiful buildings. But it is to note that not all buildings
are beautiful. In order for a building to merit the title architecture, it should
incorporate the three elements of plan, construction, and design. (Colins & Riley,
1931). This just means that not all buildings that we see are considered architecture.
For example, the Sydney Opera House at Sydney, Australia.
It is a multi-venue performing arts center which is considered one of the 20 th century’s
most famous and distinctive buildings and is tagged as one of UNESCO’s World
Heritage Site. Its wonderful design, colors, and unique shape make it a perfect
example of architecture.

DANCE
Dance is a form of expression wherein people could freely express themselves.
There are no rules about the steps and choreography and it could be in any form of
genre. Dance composes of series of movements following the rhythm that is
accompanied by music. There are a lot of examples of dances like tango, rumba,
cha-cha, dirty dancing, hip-hop, modern, interpretative and so much more.

LITERARY ART
Being a writer is not easy as it seems. Literary art goes beyond the ordinary kind of
writing. It must embody a unique style of writing that is way far more than just being
a professional writer without following any specific style or form of writing. Artists who
do literary arts use composition of words in order to express emotions to their readers
catching the readers’ attention and interest. Literary arts could be in the form of great
poems, biographies, or novels, may be in the form of fiction or non-fiction or both.
Some examples of great writers would be J. K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter
books, Stephen King, the writer of IT, and who would also have thought that the
blockbuster hit, Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy, came from a brilliant novelist too in the
person of E. L.
James.

THEATER
Just like performance art, theater is also a form of art that is also a live
performance. It uses live performers to make its performance realistic to the audience
basing from imaginary events. The performers usually follow a script, and same with
filmmaking, the elements of acting, scenery, usage of props, sound effects, lighting,
gesture and musical score altogether embodies theater. Theater also has different
genres such as drama, comedy, tragedy, musical, improvisation, and the like. The
impression and participation of the audience plays a significant element in theater.
One great example of theater arts is Miss Saigon of Lea Salonga.
